The reality is we have spent the past 10 years sacrificing our future for the present. The gamble did not pay off - now its time to pay the piper. Everything has a consequence and for us it's going to be a slow burn. We have no up and coming talent, minimal draft picks and a team stacked with dudes who are in the twilight of their careers and can't play out a full season. Along with a coach who is so stubborn he refused to adjust things when it was clear certain players abilities are not going to change on the big stage. 2020 was our last hope - short season + game length which helped our old blokes - had Richmond on the ropes and choked the shit out of it as usual. Even playing the kids isn't exciting because none of them are showing anything to suggest they will be A-grade.. Very depressing time to be a cats supporter unfortunately.

It's so depressing making a Prelim...I wonder how many y infractions I'd hand out to opposition trolls if we missed the 8..or worse..

If he was up for a rebuild he would of done it at Hawthorn. He couldn't be arsed going down the bottom again.
He wanted to do it. they had already effectively replaced him with Mitchell.
(PS Not reallly spruiking for Clarkson here, just responding to a previous poster’s premise.)

Imagine though if we had not won a flag at all by now...Impossible isn't it.
Thank your- parents, peers, whoever, that we follow Geelong.

A few of us remember a good 40 years without one, and suddenly we're 10 years back into the premiership wilderness with a distinct possibility of still being at least another 5 years away from being genuine contenders again.

Even then there's no guarantee.

Hence the anxiety about us failing to grasp the opportunities when they've presented themselves.

I'd be happy for Chris Scott see out his contract and then bring in Alistair Clarkson to build a new team from the ground up. That'd really be shoving it up the Dawks

Depending on Clarkson's motivation, not sure our salary offer will really be competitive compared with some rivals where he may be looking at $2 million per year

Yes, Melbourne were / are a clearly superior team, but we were still unexpectedly feeble on the day.
I can't disagree with that. We looked like a dog that needed to just be put out of its misery.

The one thing that occurred to me midway through the third - apart from how much I'd like a stiff drink or six - is that getting absolutely thrashed might be better than a three-goal loss like in 2019. At least an 80 point murder spree is something you can't ignore. We were smashed twice this year in finals by a top-four team and it's clear that we're a long way off.

Way I see it, is we are the 09-11 St Kilda of this era. We came close against the benchmark side in the Tiges (which was us in our dominant era), but could never capitalise. Collingwood pinched one (they're like West Coast) and St Kilda came painfully close but never saluted. We haven't been a terrible team, but even if we had pinched a flag in '19 or '20, it still would have been an outlier.

As it stands, Scott will end up having a very similar career to those like Lyon, Buckley and Leon Cameron. Only difference is, he at least has a flag to his name, due to the '11 flag, where the others have none despite their talent/relative success.

There's probably only 4 coaches in the modern era (post Thompson) that rival Scott - rightly or wrongly - and that's Clarkson, Longmire, Hardwick, Beveridge and now possibly Goodwin as a 5th in the coming years, if their rise continues as it has. The rest have achieved nothing, and currently sit behind Scott when viewed overall.

I think he will coach out next year, as much as pains me to say lol, but I daresay talks will be put on hold 'til the end of next season - dependant on what direction we head in/success we have/coaching changes/gameplan/admin changes (should be some fair changes when Hocking returns and shakes things up). Outside of that, I think we just have to hope that some hard decisions are made over the summer concerning our personnel, young players are given more priority as our older players move into the twilight, and we don't lose too many of our younger players that we want to keep/we don't trade out of the draft for established players again.

Very interesting off-season coming up IMO. Most anticipation I've had in years, but am prepared that there might be just more of the same until we actually hit the cliff (which could very well be as soon as early next year). Either way, change is coming. If it's not this year, it's definitely next year, and I for one, am looking forward to it - regardless of whether it's bad or good.

Agreed.

The narrative would've been 'oh so close' had the margin been respectable, but the thrashings have made it starkly obvious just how far off the pace we are, and triggered some soul searching within the club. There's a silver lining in the floggings.

I sat through the game in stunned silence. The only sound I made was splashing more medication into my glass.....

Paying Clarko $2m is a recipe for disaster.

The expectation and pressure that would come along with it would just be terrible.

I liken the scenario to popular bands - their first album or two are fantastic but after that their originality usually fizzes out. They might release a few more hits here or there but they'll be forever thought of about their early days.

Maybe as supporters we can’t ignore it but the club and media has done its best to dismiss it , from Scott’s press conference to the excuses being rolled out in the media .
