And as Geelong struggles to make finals for years, there may come a time when he ponders how nice it would be were there a few more past triumphs to revisit, and then thinks about the 7 top 4 finishes post-2011, ruminating on how you could have so many opportunities to not have any yield an additional flag.

Clubs cannot remain at the top in perpetuity. That's been a point I've been making for years. That's why you have to make hay while the sun is shining as it were... and under Scott we have not.

First thing - if Geelong struggle to make finals for years. Not 'as' - be pessimistic all you like but it is not an assured fact that because the naysayers here are so critical that Geelong will simply miss finals for a large chunk of time 'just because'

Rarely has Geelong been a cellar dweller team. I don't really think that will change drastically. Can we jump in and out of the 8 each year? Possibly, though I do not expect them to be down for long.

You've wanted them to make hay while the sun shined for years - and to a certain extent, they have. It is known that we have not tasted ultimate success in the past 9 years - but people keep saying that it is so hard to win a premiership and in the case of Geelong it has been just that.

Seems that some, like you, are bitter, angry, feel cheated if we don't win a flag.
I feel rapt I have witnessed 3 in 5, when they are so hard to win.
Of course the aim is to win a flag, but nearly each season, the best and most deserved team wins.
Stats show that when 2 teams are 6-0 after 6, they nearly 100% of the time go on to play in the GF. And so it was this year. Yet, for a little while, we were excited about our prospects.
Isn't that better than not even making the 8?

I am with you - I share the same opinion.

You reached the final conclusion with the obvious speculative opinion that Richmond circa 2020 played a better grand final than Melbourne circa 2021. And if I tried to argue this point with you I am sure you would pick out some stats somewhere that would support this speculation leaving aside those that would contradict it - this is your modus operandi.

You need to approach this scott debate with a more opened mind.

That alone tells you something. A good proportion of this board has spent the last four years performing mental gymnastics to rationalise how Richmond were suddenly good enough to win premierships at all. Now apparently they were better than Melbourne? Yeah sure.

Exactly. Say what you want about that club, but they absolutely do not sit on past glories. They always look forward.

They could have easily cruised after 1978. They'd won 3 flags in 8 years. Amazing. Imagine all the fans saying "well I remember when we went 36 years without a flag, I'll be content to have seen 4 now, and 3 in pretty quick succession. And look at all the premiership players we've lost".

Funny thing is though, the club didn't agree. They reset, they won 5 in 9 years throughout the 1980s and in 1991. Even then, they didn't rest content, they then went back and won 4 in 8 years include three straight.

Unfortunately I still have the impression too many Geelong fans, and it seems some at the club, are perfectly content to be nice and finish 2nd. The excuses are just never ending. It's absolutely reasonable to think after 2011 we may not have won 3 or 4 premierships. But I refuse to believe when you make 6 prelim finals, and with the players THE CLUB DELIBERATELY BROUGHT IN TO WIN FINALS (don't forget that part), that they shouldn't have won 1 or 2 in that time.

This would make more sense if you had any evidence - any at all - to support it.

No one is ‘content’ - people at the club, players, fans. Do you think we somehow hate losing finals less than other clubs? Everyone f***en hates it.

It seems, though, that you’re associating results with aims.

You seem to think because we keep losing preliminary finals that that’s what we’ve aimed at.

Tell me. Can you think of a single sportsperson or team who has ALWAYS reached their goal?

I can’t.

I can think of a few million who have missed their goals though.
Do you think Greg Norman was happy just to contend at American majors because that’s all he ever did at them?
Do you reckon the few hundred thousand he’d make for finishing second was what he was aiming at, because that’s where he finished?

No. But at the end of the day if someone said to him ‘you need to revamp your game and try a new putting style and so forth’ and he said ‘well no, I am close, I led all four majors after three rounds this year so I don’t need to change TOO many things too drastically’ I think most people would not draw the conclusion that he was only aiming at being competitive

richmond are a triple premiership team, melbourne have presently only won a single flag.

for now there is no rational argument they are better until at least a comparable journey down the track.

that aside, we were much more competitive against richmond and did not get blown away like the dogs.

It wasn't. 3 interstate wins in 3 states was an epic effort.
5 years after a flag to rebuild and make a granny is really quite good too. Very good.
But....they didn't win. And I reckon they might fall away next year. Would be disheartening psychologically how much better Melb were.

we get the points for a much better more competitive grand final, bulldogs crumbled far worse than we did at any point.

the magnitude of that belting was nothing like our 2020 grand final experience, and this is the one that matters the most... so we have to get the points.

Lol. Awesome if you decided you'd be mates with Danger too. Might of been annoying the whole time, but pays off for sure when he needs a mate at his new club.

who is danger apparently recruiting besides a backup bloke who cost us a pick we werent going to use at the draft anyway?? seems pretty innocuous and insignificant

Dude - you went ahead and did it even though I didn't argue your point:

9 goals to 2 after half time in 2020.
Fair enough, yeah Dogs lost by more. But it's not really anything to hang your hat on.
But yes the GF matters most and Dogs lost by more.
But also we lost that first final against Port last year..
Outsude the top4, 3 in a row in different states and quarantining every time. Was a fair old effort. Only team to have done that.

Dude - you went ahead and did it even though I didn't argue your point:

saying a triple premiership team is better than one who has currently won 1 premiership is picking out stats to suit an argument? surely tongue and cheek again and your not serious?? that is like saying i am picking out stats to suit myself by saying the sum of 2+2= 4

who is danger apparently recruiting besides a backup bloke who cost us a pick we werent going to use at the draft anyway?? seems pretty innocuous and insignificant
Yeah that guy. I didn't say mates plural. I was implying only 1. Was sort of the point of the joke.
Not the greatest joke I know, but it was part of it.

i do hear alot on here complaints about how the margins and way we get blown away shows we are nowhere near it and is the reason scott etc etc should be sacked... so why would the bulldogs getting belted by 70 odd points be somehow not in this same bracket?? if anything they have a team primed for a flag and its worse they were on the end of this belting than our dads army who only lost by 4 goals in the grand final.

not sure if you push that " we get belted in finals narrative" but the same must then be applied to the bulldogs grand final and all the labels.

for my 2 cents, margins in finals are a severely overrated analysis of the final gaps between teams. the emotions and circa of things can just often see blowouts happen more often than not when one side gets the run on and is clearly going to win and the other drops their heads. you see it all too often. so my personal opinion is i don't always read into margins as some affirmative indication of how close you are to a flag. But if i have to compare between club A and B, it does come into it as a metric

No I'm saying I didn't argue your point - yet you went ahead and counteracted anyway.

And for the record - YES IT IS! - even funnier that you can't understand why it is.

No. They got smashed. Blown away after looking favourites half way through the 3rd.
Absolutely blown away.
Yeah for some years I pushed the narrative we get blown away in first quarters of finals.
Cause we did!. It pissed me off.
We fixed that last year.

alot of finals games atually have been blow outs over the past 5 or so years not including ours... i think one year it was something like the majority of games were 6+ goal wins. surprising to see something like that given it is the best vs the best playing off and you would expect mostly close encounters. we dished out a few of them while being on the end of some too. the sydney belting, the collingwood belting, the brisbane belting at the gabba also.

It doesn't need evidence; it's an opinion. Which was pointed out by me saying "Unfortunately I still have the impression...".

Doesn't seem like that at all around here. Some have become more frustrated than previously, but the same posters who refuse to criticise Scott and club are exactly the same afterwards as before. The convenient virus that was mentioned only after the Melbourne loss was grabbed onto like a lifeboat. Doesn't seem like everyone hates it at all. Hatred towards the supporters who criticise Scott, sure, but that's been there for years anyway.

It was a clear problem.
Their is nothing wrong with admitting it was a problem.
It doesn't mean you are attacking Chris Scott. You could even push the point he fixed it.

Yeah was cost them was losing three in a row before the finals. Went from being on top to finishing 5th. Probably wouldn't have beaten Melbourne anyway but would have been in a better position.

Nah you’re right, not ragging on someone who makes up part of the organisation is tantamount to enjoying losing.

Here’s an insight into how most football fans’ minds - Geelong or otherwise - work.

I follow Eastern Suburbs in the NRL.

This season we lost 5 representative players - Test or State of Origin - from our starting 13, for the year - by round 8.

We had season ending injuries to two more Test players by the end of the regular season, as well as 4-5 injuries to first choice first graders. Additionally, our other two starting back rowers, one an origin player and the other destined to be this year, both missed 6+ matches with suspension.

So when we lost in week two of the finals, it probably wasn’t that unexpected and all things considered I think we had a pretty good year and I wasn’t compelled to start throwing around claims like ‘robbo can’t coach’ or ‘we need to look at new ideas.’

Was I still ****ing gutted that we lost, and filthy we didn’t win the competition? You bet.

Being reasonably satusfied with the achievements of a team in a given year, and still wishing desperately that they did better, are not mutually exclusive and it’s more than past due that people accepted this

Your missing one important point though.
People can feel however the f**k they want.

Still a fair effort considering they lost their full-forward 3 weeks out from finals. How would we have faired in Tom Hawkins suffered the same fate?
