Are they wrong? If you say things should be happening because it will yield a better result, and then those things finally do start to happen and it does yield a better result, aren't they vindicated?
We are also changing the storyline here to try and save face.

The narrative was not Chris Scott needs to adjust some things and we will be a premiership contending team, the narrative was Chris Scott is not good enough to coach his own premiership side and this group will never compete for a flag, that we need to go into a rebuild. So don’t go trying to rewrite history.

He is obviously a good enough coach and those views expressed are by far and wide wrong.

If the club listened to these people your trying to claim had all the answers Chris Scott stole, we would literally be sitting at the bottom of the ladder right now figuring out if we want to bid on Ashcroft or not, as we would have traded out half of the club for draft picks including Rohan dangerfield selwood tuohy Hawkins Duncan blicavs..

Following these voices your claiming would have lead us to the furthest place from a premiership imagineable as I distinctly recall the outcry that our list is never going to win a flag or be a real contender and we should get rid of Scott and rebuild.

How your somehow claiming these people left a trail of premiership ideas is just laughable.

We all knew these types of ‘supporters’ would switch across to this. It was inevitable. The hypocritical contortions that somehow end up with them still sucking their own appendages (but in new ways).

When we don’t win a premiership we’re doing it wrong. When we do, it’s all because the ‘supporters’ knew what was needed.

The sad thing is that it’s being done in such a simplistic way. After all the whining and whinging and the toxicity for the last few years, I thought they’d be a bit more sophisticated when they tried to turn their coats over and switch. But no, they still come at it with overinflated and thoroughly unearned ego.
Just change it to the I was wrong Chris Scott thread.

No, the ones vindicated are those who drove the recruitment, development and integration of talent over the past few years to get to this point. While managing and coaching the main stays to adapt as this new talent became available. During a period where a winning and supportive culture made ours a destination club.

Some of these recruits were free agents/trades that those armchair experts felt we should steer clear of while undertaking a complete rebuild (skip the finals for a few years, so be it etc). The ones actually at the club saw it vital to keep contending while we had Hawk, Sel, Danger etc. And haven't they been vindicated regardless of Saturdays result, with two GFs in three years?

I am still trying To understand how saying someone cannot do something, then when they turn around and do it.. In what fallen rabbit hole world does that make you correct?? Bizarre take.

These so called ‘supporters’ are pathetic and should just f*ck off. Some have had the good grace to go, so for that I thank them, however they should just man up and say they were wrong. Had to be said again - Pathetic.

This

I will never understand why people follow something that brings them nothing but hate and vitriol.

Football is a hobby with varying degrees of passion for each and every supporter. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hobby's should be an escape. Something you ENJOY to get away from the regular grind of life that we all have to put up with. The last two years is as good of an example as we'll ever get...life ****** sucked and we had no control over anything that was occuring. A passion like football should be an outlet for that stuff, not an extra avenue to spew hate and anger.

Why you would follow a football club just to hate everything they do and represent is just beyond me...for both yourself and others...find something you enjoy. Who cares what it is, just something.

Our list has been good enough to win previously if we played the right game plan. We had Richmond on ice and went defensive after half time. Multiple opportunities that were lost due to bad game plan. Also poor recruiting.

If it was so easy to beat Richmond then someone would have actually done it.

We got closer than anybody over their flag years, yet your expectation is we still should have changed something to win....you're kidding right?

This wasn't some team of upstarts who just happened to have our number...this was a dominant side who NOBODY was getting near in the finals over their period of dominance.

It happens. As amazing as the club has been, you can't be the best team every year.

Nope. Richmond went up a gear and we couldn’t go with them. We can now.

We changed our tactics after half time and went defensive which put more pressure on our guys who folded. It was a coaching mistake - we had them on ice. Absolutely no reason we should not have more than 1 premiership over Scotts reign given the lists we have had.

for starters, richmond started to get ontop of us before half time came. You would be pretty stupid to think the coaches told the players to defend a 15 point lead at half time as well.

out of curiosity, if Scott wins the flag on saturday, that makes him a 2x premiership winning coach, 3x grand final appearances, 5x prelim finals appearances, and 11 finals appearances spanning a 12 year career as coach with the greatest winning percentage of all time for coaches.

so just out of curiosity... what exactly would you rate scott out of 10 for his tenure overall if this happens?

If Clarkson is a 9 (3 premierships), Hardwick an 8 (3 premierships) then Scott a 7 if we win the premiership on Saturday (2 premierships - first was kind of gifted). Thompson also an 8 since he built the team and game plan from scratch (2 premierships). If we lose on Saturday Scott goes down to a 6 - same level as Longmire, Goodwin, Beverage etc (all 1 premiership however those coaches had more influence on the team and didn't win it in their first year). I don't think you get that win % literally means **** all - if you go through the history books no one cares that Geelong did great in the H&A season only to get rolled by Stewart Dew in the Grand Final. Premierships are what matters - the rest is about a supporters feeling during the season but does not matter long term when rating coaches/teams.

was sounding a semi normal post until this ridiculous bolded part. I think discussing things with you is beyond a lost cause given you believe coaches are gifted flags.

i think i will take my discussions somewhere more rationale.

Let me put it to you simply... Which of the following coaches has had more influence on a team.

Coach A: Comes to a club that had a massive amount of recent success including a premiership and finals in the past 2 years - steps into the club and wins a premiership by applying a few 'tweaks' to how they play.
Coach B: Comes to a club that has been performing poor/average - starts to implement his game plan, gets involved in recruiting and over a 5-10 year period continues to develop his young recruits and finally gets the team to a high standard - they go on to win a premiership. They play his 'brand' of football.

If your answer is not "Coach B" then I cannot help you. Chris Scott himself said that he had only a small influence on the group in 2011 and suggested a few 'tweaks' - he also said his coaching ability at that stage was poor compared to now (no shit because these things take time to gain experience). The fact you think what I am saying is outlandish worries me. It's the same reason I rate Thompson over Scott - Thompson took a shit/average team - recruited young kids, implemented a revolutionary style of football and over 5-10 years implemented it until he found success. This does not mean Scott is a shit coach - just not quite on the level of the others I mentioned ahead of him. Anyway lets see what happens Saturday - fingers crossed we get the job done.

again, there is no such thing as a coach who is gifted a premiership team. It takes incredible work behind the scenes to achieve a premiership. Let alone a side that got flogged in a prelim the year before. It has also been well documented by past players that he was a huge influence on the group, and they wouldn't have won it without him.

Anyone who believes premierships are gifted to a coach has a very poor grasp of the game, and i am not going to waste my time arguing with back and forth, you are honestly a waste of time to chat with given your capacity to analyse.

all the best. and just an FYI i did not bother to read your post as it will be a waste.

The so called 'Scott Haters' have been 100% vindicated. For years they have been saying a change of gameplan was needed to be less defensive. And now he has done that they are happy and supportive. Seems some on here are upset about being wrong about the gameplan from 2016-2021.

Ah well, if we lose this weekend, he can always go his photography sideline www.chrisscott.com.au

While I dont think the above is him, it does raise a bit of question. If you've been listening to SEN at all in recent times you'll have heard Chris Scott (coach of geelong and 'business coach'??) spruik Web Central's .au domain offerings, where he says follow the ACSC's advice of pre-registering your .au domain today to avoid cyber-squatting - and yet if Chris Scott (Geelong coach) is not Chris Scott (photographer), then he is saying he is going to do exactly the opposite - and cybersquat the chrisscott.au domain denying the legitimate business from protecting its brand

I appreciate this board and its various threads are for Geelong supporters to discuss and debate various topics, but can't we put aside our need to be so goddamn right all the bloody time, for just a few days, and share a common happiness and enjoyment that we're in a freaking GF, and the favourites to boot??!

Precious time that could be used to just bask in the moment, to comprehend the achievement and what could be, to....you know, support the team......is being chewed up and wasted here.

Can't y'all just call a truce on the hostilities for a little while and instead just relish the bond we share as supporters of our great club in it's greatest moment??

You want to go at it afterwards knock yourselves out, but until then, give it a rest....... Please?

So if Scott’s first was gifted because of the list he got when he first arrived, that means all of Clarkson and Hardwick’s flags after their first one was gifted right? After all, they already had flag winning lists

Neither of them. They’ve both done what they had to do to win

Ita a shame in such a joyous week that we are still bickering over Scott.
A good mate of mine gave up his social club membership last year because of our coach and his supposed failings.

If only it was that simple, I tend to like to back my side when things don’t go our way.
I understand the angst when things don’t work out, we all feel it.

To simply say the coach got it wrong is a massive over simplification.

I will address game plan only, as this myriad of hate has too many tentacles, as for gifting of premierships in his first year I will ignore.

Circa 2011 our last premiership Hawthorn became the next “dynasty”
For those with short memories I will summarise their spectacularly successful brand.
Control ball movement, control some more, then hit a target inside your fifty.
Simple and amazingly successful as their ball movement was pristine both by hand and foot, their choice of options was amazing. All this and their ”Little general” Mitchell at the helm.

So as most teams do they looked at Hawthorn and thought we need to be more like them?
Geelong at the time and for some time now had an ageing list not known for a lot of leg speed so a more controlled game suited our stocks and hey if Hawthorn could do it why not us we still had some very good players onboard.

We all know the history until now, in between the genius ( and I hate to admit this about Hardwick) of Richmond’s game plan was understated, just move the ball forward at all costs, frenetic chase, tackling and the bonus of a once in a lifetime player in Martin coupled with astute recruiting (Prestia, Lynch etc) was the new blueprint.

Quick ball movement was now king?

Unfortunately football is not like scrabble where you can replace all or most of your letters, list turnover/additions are a yearly event.

Did we need to change our MO, most likely?
Is it a coincidence in the last few years we have added Stengel, Close, Miers, Smith, Holmes etc?

All beasts who run hard full ground for pretty much the whole game, much better suited to an aggressive quick ball movement type of game than previous options, in short we now have the cattle. Throw in the massive rise of SDK, the beautiful maturation of Zuthrie, the unearthing of Atkins, the surreal skills of Cameron and this team is completely different to any version preceding.

In short we have evolved and will continue to evolve in the hands of the experts who run this great club of ours.
Lets rejoice rather than joust to make petty points.

Say what you like about our club and or it’s coach but they have delivered us a massive chance this year.
Save your barbs for the opposition

At least from my end there's nothing personal and hostile at all. Just thoughts on where we are now relative to previous years and MY explanation - praise for the coaching staff/football department and analysis of list progression surely belongs here. Why should those discussion points be shut down just because a couple in here over the years have butted heads?

Only saying that we should be putting aside the bickering and sharing the joy, excitement and sense of achievement in the one week where our club is about to climb the pinnacle, rather than indulging a tired, circular argument with the pot shots?

Let it go for now. Just live in the moment.

No pot shots for me. I see a talking point ("this game plan could have easily been applied 6 years earlier and won multiple flags" - I have an alternate view), I respond. Same as talking points in the match day thread where I've had an opposing view. I'm over the moon about where we are - I have been for most of the year actually. But I like discussing WHY I like what I like, and what caused it. It'd be a great shame if I wasn't allowed to do that here because there is some existing rivalry between two completely different posters.

There are lots of discussions on BigFooty I don't feel like adding input. But I don't feel a need to silence others, good intentions or not.

Oncr again, I'm not asking for anyone to be silenced.

I'm merely asking that people give the bickering over the same, tired argument a rest for JUST A FEW DAYS. Is that too much to ask??

We're in a goddamned GF. We should be excited and putting the differences aside temporarily to better our sense of occasion here, but maybe that's just me.

Yours is actually the most antagonistic tone I've seen in here the past 24 hours. The thread exists for a reason - to discuss Chris Scott. There's a lot of civil discourse, which is what I choose to focus on. I will continue to discuss him in here no matter the occasion. The same that I would Hawkins in a Hawkins thread. I fully endorse people who choose not to discuss various topics in GF week too. Hopefully mods will police where appropriate. Thanks.
