Delisted 20. Oscar Brownless (F/S) (2018-2019),(2020-2021)

I actually really like Brownless and think he has something in him that the club sees and as a bonus he was willing to get off the main list sit through the draft and wait for us to call his name again just to help the club which Wells confirms on a video about the rookie draft.

It evidently can't be something all that special the club sees in him to churn him onto the rookie list after just a year at the club. Usually you want to give kids a little time to see how they come along, but making the decision to drop him after only one year is a little worrying. The fact that no other clubs bothered taking to him may also say something.

They didn't drop him they asked him to help the club and he agreed for the good of the club

or maybe he was the only one guarateed not to draw attentive eyes of other clubs because of the family connection and agreed to help the club with list managemwnt.

Fact is - we both have NFI - but good on you for looking for and finding the most bottem feeder type perspective.

Maybe the club has drawn a line through him. I'm guessing he would have been on a two year contract, if another club picked him then they would take on that salary commitment, but he wasn't picked up. So as we were committed to including his second year salary as part of our overall TPP we may as well as have him on our list and maybe he will come good.

There's no way to know outside footy circles, but there's a guy a work who lives in Geelong (doesn't follow them) who is adamant Brownless wouldn't be near a senior team if not for his surname. Who knows.

Same story with the Silvagni’s at Blues. Very good friend of mine had a son with the Chargers in Jack’s year. Said it was laughable that he was drafted in front of a host of other kids that year. Nepotism at its finest!

Look I'm not really a Brownless fan and I think it is a folly that people are swallowing the PR line of Brownless agreeing to be delisted to help the club out but at the same time there were people in Geelong that said GAJ wouldn't be getting a game at the Geelong falcons if not for his surname!!! Just the way people are.

Don't think you'd be asking the kids you desperately wanted to help in that way.

You would if your list spots were tight which ours were. OB will be fine imo.

Jack is a good player now.

Wow, impeccable source there.

Indeed. Almost like I would have needed to include phrases such as "There's no way to know" and "Who knows" in the post. Oh that's right I did.

I do know I don't know the local and junior footy scene in Geelong. This guy does.

I'll say it again - for those clearly too stupid to get it the first time - who knows.

Had Gary junior shown more at junior level?

No, you wouldn't. If you thought the kid was really good, you'd just keep him and go to the draft with fewer selections. He has a 2-year contract and is spending the second one on the rookie list. That doesn't say they rate him that highly. I appreciate the sentimentality of it, and I have no problem keeping him another year, but to suggest the move indicates the club values him highly is a little farfetched. This isn't the move you make with highly valued assets, particularly young ones.

I've only looked at the VFL numbers and Brownless didn't appear to be tearing it apart. Not sure if he was on reduced minutes but he was in single digit posessions at times.

Would love an accurate idea from more knowledgeable fans than I about how he's tracking.

It's unethical, maybe, and probably bad business but I don't mind a little back scratching between mates. If he's being given a little extra space to develop because his father was a loyal servant, then that's ok. Not to cripple a club but just a leaning here and there. If a work colleague knows a guy, I like to see least give them a chance with an interview. I can see the counter argument, don't get me wrong.

Well I think you’re right. It’s a clear message that he is at the bottom tier of the list. It’s up to him to show something now.

He was selected for Vic Country and finished 10th in the VFL B&F. I think he probably tops out as a decent VFL player but I wonder if he doesn’t cop shit precisely because of his name.

No, I meant it.
Your source is obviously impeccable.
As is your sense of humour.

yes we all have no data ... Id say a blend of under whellming appeal to other clubs and probably a rookie is about his right spot anyway ..he was P70 something . That I don't think there should bea rookie list now is a different discussion..even TroyS said on the Bell poscast that he sees its more the 5th round of the draft etc.

Id not be unhappy to see him come in and push for a game as a rookie just as Atkins has.

Maybe ...or maybe he will continue to get better just as some of the VFL types we have drafted later in their 20's have. My vision of Oscar is he lacked upper body strength...too many tackles broken ..yet he tried to tackle which showed good intent. Maybe he is good at 22 23 ...if we persist.
