2005 Father-Son Draftees

With Father/Son picks, is it fair to assume that any club qualified to pick up a youngster is free to approach that youngster who, in turn, is free to knock them back if he wishes?

I remember a few years back Terry Wallace bemoaned the fact that his sons would not be eligible for the Hounds under F/S, but would be eligible for Hawthorn.

With relations between both Wallace & the Bulldogs now decidedly frosty, it is possible that he wouldn't be so averse to his boys linking up with the Hawks (assuming, of course, they get good enough to cut the mustard).

If a club is thinking about using pick 3 on an F/S, an assumption should be drawn that the player under consideration is effectively rated at a pick 3 level and (mostly) above.

In a hypothetical situation, were one of the Wallace boys deemed a probable first round pick in the future, it would be interesting to see if they accepted a Hawk offer to be taken for sure in round 3, or if they would go it alone and take their chances in the general draft.

Its almost taken for granted that F/S prospects willingly go to a club because they have always supported it due to their father's history with it. It was only a few year's ago, however, that Steven Greene was put in a position of having to choose between Hawthorn & St Kilda because he was eligible for both clubs under the rule. It is most likely that we will see other hard choices being made under the rule in future...

What about jake williams (son of greg)? Played vic metro U15 and plays for PEGS seniors in year 10 and got 3rd b + f. Does anyone know this guy? Older brother Jye is in Yr 12 at PEGS anyone know either of them?

Marc Murphy is an absolute gun. He is eligible to be drafted by Brisbane as his dad played 300 games with Fitzroy. He played for Vic Metro this year and would have been drafted had he been old enough.

True. He will be a real star. Fantastic for Victoria, Oakleigh and Whitefriars this season.

Could be a gun cricketer, too.

Has Anyone heard of Matt Brown, Brother of Jonathan Brown and son of Brain Brown??? is he a chance to be drafted next year.

I was under the impression Jonathan Brown's brother was Tim?

i heard Kevin Sheedy has a new "project" player. Thomas Hird son of James, apparently he is not goign to hard on him in the pre season as he is only about 5

Could also be the best male model the world has ever seen, well he thinks so anyway. ;)

Yes, after 20 years in the competetion, they wont be able to use use sons of WAFL players and will need sons of former Eagles players. Therefore making Cale Morton, younger brother of Mitch ineligble for the Father/Son Rule to the Eagles, unlike Mitch and as Jarryd will be, as he(Cale) isnt eligble until 2007
That's a shame for the Eagles, because Cale is reportedly the best of the 3 at his age. Mind you Mitch has come on pretty well, probably would have gone in the top 5-10 this year.

Knowing the family quite well, Cale would be at the about same stage as Mitch, and not far in front of Jarryd, at the same age in football development terms, all have been captains of teams at Hale and have great skills, are tall and very mobile, but Cale as Mitch has done will need to put on alot of muscle over the next few years and bulk up. Cale would have to be looking at this early stage, to go early on the draft, as his Mitch would have, its just unforunate it doesnt appear Cale will be able to go Father / Son.

There is also some rule about a coach who coaches x-number of games allowing his son to qualify for that club.

I'm not sure of the number of games - perhaps 150?

If Wallet stays at Salivaland for 6-7 seasons, it may qualify his spawn to play with them.

Anyone know?

Just wait until 2020 or so, Tom and Alex, two Hird's in the same side! :D

The rule about coaches / administrators was removed. The only guy taken under it was Simon Fletcher to Geelong. If it was still in existence Fergus Watts would have gone to the Saints.

Was that because of Richard Cole almost getting picked up by Essendon becuase Richie's legal gardian at that time worked at Essendon in some role. It was a SHE and I think she was a loose relative of Richie also, like a distant auntie or something.

Brian Brown only played 51 games for Fitzroy. Since Jonathon got drafted they've changed the rule from 50 games to 100 games. I think it was becuase of the argument that SA and WA clubs put forth that the father only has to play 50 VFL/AFL games for Vic clubs where the dad had to play 150 WAFL/SANFL games in WA/SA and fair enough too.

BTW can someone fill me in on what the current rules are for SA/WA clubs. I.E what clubs fathers do WCE and Freo get to draft sons under and the same for SA.

Close. Essendon board member Beverley Knight made a lot of her money running an art gallery specialising in Indegenous Art. She is heavily involved in charity. Richy Cole lived with her. The claim was that she had been his guardian and as such Essendon were entitled to claim him.

The rule changed after that. Partly because of that case and partly because there was a feeling that it could be abused to easily. From memory an administrator had to have 10 years servive and Knight didn't quite qualify anyway.

As an aside it is actually a little suprising that there haven't been more controversies. With our modern world of divorce, remarriage, adoption etc I would have thought there would have been more 'odd' cases'. The only one I remember was Tom Kavanagh (the son of Brent Croswell) whose mum had obviosuly remarried (or gone back to the maiden name).

Cousins' dad was an administrator at the Eagles wasn't he? Or did his dad play enough WAFL games as well as VFL games at Geelong to qualify Ben for the F/S?
