massive over-reaction here - at least wait for the dust to settle for a couple of days and see whats happening before declaring his career is over etc! he might be back in full training by thursday morning for all we know right now.

Thats really unfortunate for the big fella! I'm 1 of many that cant wait to see him get out there & start a well established career for the bombers!
Hopefully it is only minor as at last weeks shepparton intra club after match dinner function gumby was 1 of the players sitting on my table so as you could imagine i zeroed in on him for some info on his conditon & how he pulled up after the game & how his pre season was going? All respones we're very good & the 1 on how he's currently feeling was the most positive (if you can say that after this latest set back) he said he's feeling awesome, no pre season problems with the back or hammy's & couldn't wait to get out there this friday against west coast, stating a starting position of chf! Obviously thats not gunna happen now but hopefully its not too long we have to wait to see gumby back out there tearing up chf!
Also why i had the chance i spoke to big hilley, he also is looking in very good shape after the knee reco, he said he wont play this week but a nab cup rd 2 start is where he & the club are at! So i asked " you gunna just ease yourself back into it out of full forward" his reply "No! If i put myself out there i'm in the ruck!" so just thought i'd throw in that little extra positive to try help!!!

The official word from the hospital that performed his operation last year was that he should not be playing until 2011.

It was only a matter of time before this happened again, put the boy on ice until next year and get him 100%.

Sounds precautionary. Flying to Perth would not be the best thing for a sore back, even though I imagine he would have loved to play in front of his home state.

This. :thumbsu: Don't underestimate the very long flights (especially for a big guy), coupled with it only being a pre-season match as the deciding factors in the club taking this cautious approach. It's the only responsible option.

Geez at some stage they're gonna have to stop this whole cautious thing with him and just let him play FFS!!! I know its only NAB cup but he needs some game time before rd 1. Even if they only played him for half the game, Intra-Club matches aren't the same as a good hitout against actual opposition.

This... is ridiculous!

Too many "supporters" here writing his obituary. Everyone just settle down and wait to see what develops. Seriously, some of you are carrying on like a bunch of hysterical school girls!

You think you're disappointed, spare a thought for the man himself.

Not that phased by this at all. I said last year he was unlikely to play this year anyway. I have no expectation on him - so he can take what ever time he needs. Really guys, get off this Gumby boat. He aint the messiah. He might play, he might not. If/When he does play, his body is always going to be unreliable. Time to go to plan B.

I heard SEN this morning and Tim as usual didn't say much. He confirmed Gumby lying on the coach and also said its a setback. But not terminal.

Take that as you will. All i know millions of Bomber supporters out there are praying for the former. I'll still back him as an Essendon player but its getting out of hand.

Heard that too, but thought I he was holding info back, by the sound of his voice..
Or is just me looking into thinks a bit too much..

Diskectomy

It is normal to have pain in your back after the surgery. You may also have
leg pain. Pain is caused by the incision and swelling around the nerve. It will
decrease as your back heals. You may also experience muscle spasms across
your back and down your legs. This does not mean that the surgery was
unsuccessful or that your recovery will be slow.

I worry because it seems to be the same news we heard last year. Only minor injury etc and he didn't play the whole year.
That was my initial thoughts too but last year it was pre-surgery. I take solace in knowing that spasms occur during recovery. Positive thoughts attracts positive energy... or something like that.
