i hope a bit of common sense is used when players from the test playing nations play one day international cricket for the associate nations.

i've never been a fan of seeing guys play for two countries over their careers (in any sport), so i know i'm bending my rules a bit here... but it would do a world of good for those dutch lads (and other countries where it happens) by having an australian first class cricket in cooper playing for them....

i don't know the exact rules, but i'm assuming once you play for a test nation in senior international cricket you can't go back and play for an associate one??

Presumably there is some preclusion period. Eoin Morgan now has that issue, been getting Ireland into World Cups to then be picked by the Poms. If he wasn't selected for the England WC Squad (which I don't expect) I'm not sure if Ireland could name him.

You can but have to serve the 4 years off in between but can jump straight from an Associate to test nation 1 day later, very strange rules

However Ed Joyce has gotten approval to play for Ireland in the World Cup as it will be about 2 months short of his 4 years since last playing for England

It's strange that Ed Joyce hasn't played for England for that long, because he looked like he could be a solid top order batsman (great pick up for the Irish though, especially after losing Eoin Morgan to England).

I'm curious as to why Ryan Ten Doeschate hasn't gone down the path of guys like Joyce & Morgan in trying to qualify for test cricket, because he's a pretty good bat

It's a shame that Dirk Diggler won't get a game for the Oranje (I think they could've given him some dispensation there), but he should have stuck with the Dutch after playing so well in the 20/20 Championship in England a few years ago, because he was always going to be pigeon holed as a 20/20 specialist.

It'll be interesting to see if Jon Davidson will get a game for Canada again ?, and if there's a chance for another associate nation to knock off some big scalps.

But for early favourites, I would have to go with Sri Lanka simply because they have a strong varied attack, great batsmen, and solid leadership, and having the chance to play more games at home in the World Cup will be a godsend, the odds a good, and I wouldn't mind putting on some money on them taking it out.

yeah being able to jump from associate to test nation team straight away makes sense. it would be stupid if tom cooper had a breakout season but couldn't play for australia cause he had represented netherlands. it would deter plays like him from playing for the associate nations which i think should be encouraged from players who are eligible. i really think that having him around helps the dutch squad.

but going back the other way, four years seem a bit of a long time for me. i think two years of being out a test nation's one day team is more than enough to show that said player has been cut from that team and he can go back and play for the associate nation he is eligible to play for.

i really think the development of the associate countries is important for the game and everything should be done to help them. one of the things i put forward years ago through my old man was developing an affiliate program between the major provincial teams and associate nations (for instance NSW - Kenya, Vic - Canada, Surrey - Ireland, Northern District (NZ) - Namibia etc,.) whereby the provincial board would fly a couple of promising cricketers in their early 20's, sort them with visa's and a job somewhere and have them play in the feeder (grade) competition. for a young guy from an associate nation like Namibia to get that sort of tough week-in week-out cricket that he wouldn't be used to would be an immense boost for their game.... but i don't think that even left the "too hard basket" and now money is a bit tighter in cricket cricles than it was five years ago...

He's in their squad of 30.

not any more

On the associates in the World Cup, I think Canada and Kenya will be thoroughly outclassed, Netherlands could win a match or two and Ireland probably have the biggest chance of pulling off an upset.

However I think it's really important for the Associates to do well at this World Cup, as it might persuade the ICC to put in a qualifying event for the 2015 event, as that now only 10 teams can participate. Following on from this it would be good for the development of the game,if Ireland can remain 10th in the ODI standings, as then it will be interesting to see whether the ICC include them in the next World Cup or even the new ODI League

That may well happen with Tom Cooper one day too. NSW born but has a Dutch mother. Currently playing for SA.

Averages 65 with the bat and 23 with the ball in international cricket. Be nice if he could replicate that back home with the Redbacks, but he'll play for Australia eventually.

Will this be the last ODI World Cup? Wouldn't surprise me.

A minor point, but I hope Australia wears (mainly) yellow - as opposed to the green of our name in the OP.
I hope not, Australia is hosting the next one

As for the colour, they always wear yellow away these days

It's not the last 50 over World Cup, but the next one will only have 10 teams meaning this could be the last we see of the Associate nations in this arena, which is pathetic. They're only doing that because India cracked it over not making the 2nd phase last time, and because they have the money and the voting bloc (the same voting bloc that will ensure Bangladesh will stay in test cricket) they can dictate what they want.

Plus when its not Indias tournament they want a nice short tournament so they can get back home to another home series of 25 ODIs to make some money for themselves

The Zimbabwean 15 is up. Positive sign that Sean Ervine is back in the fold, but an opening partner for Brendan Taylor is a concern, with at least 5 potential partners not in the final squad.

In other news, Bangladesh have pruned their 30 to 23 and John Davison is back in the Canadian fold having been given his explanation over why some players were omitted from their 30.

I was hoping that Grant Flower would go to the world cup after he played in the series against South Africa

Yeah, I'm a little surprised Hamilton Masakadza didn't make the side.

Hoping Steve Tikolo is playing for Kenya. He just always seems to be there at World Cups...
