Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

The 2000 Bombers had Wellman, Hardwick, Fletch and Wallis, all quite tall.

Fletch - Carlisle
Wellman - Hooker
Hardwick - Pears
Wallis - Trengove

Cats had Scarlett, Taylor, Milburn, Harley, Enright ect
Lions had Johnson, Leppitsch, Michael, White ect

Tall defenses aren't the end of the world, just some food for thought

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

I agree that tall defences can work but Hardwick and Johnson were both 180cm...hardly monsters.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

Do not get this fascination with Trengove at all. We'd have to pay way over the odds for a player we don't really need.

I'd be happy for us to sit tight, unless a small forward can be had for a bit of a bargain.

Same goes with Vince, not sure we would get the output desired for a player we would have to give up so much for (early pick + player) .

Think we sit tight and develop our kids.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

With Hille almos declaring he will make way for the big bell/ryder combo it wouldnt hurt us if Trengrove nominated us as his prefered destinatio, if ryder or bell get injured Trengrove would be ample back up plus it might allow Hurley/Carlile up forward???

Obviously i'd like a quality middy, but maybe that'll come in free agency.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

Hardingham and Colyer are yet to sign, are we seeing what trade might be on the table with a WA team?

would they get us a Gaff?

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

There wouldnt be much sweeter than Gaff, but honestly would cost the farm and is only a possibility if he demands to go home, and nominates us really.

The more realistic targets, IMHO, is to offer way overs for genuine midfielders (juniors) who for whatever reason are not getting games at AFL level at their respective clubs.

I speak of Koby Stevens (West Coast) or Kane Lucas (Carlton) etc. The latter surely would be feeling a little insecure of his position at the moment but isnt a Vic so not sure.

You have to offer these a massive $$ increase with midfield opportunity.

Going after guys like Gaff, Dangerfield etc is all fun in theory, but their clubs will pull out all stops to match the cash we would offer. Its the 2nd rung guys, who the clubs want to keep in a perfect world but cant offer the money a team like us, with salary cap space, can throw at them.

No they would not.
Forget Gaff, will be one of the best mids in the AFL but will not be leaving West Coast any time soon.

Kane Lucas would be the right type of target. Early draft pick who is going to be on the fringe of the Blues midfield for a while.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

What are peoples thoughts on David McKay (Adelaide)?

Nice size about him, good speed, nice skills.

Is a good age (23) who has struggled to get on the park as he has had a series of leg injuries.

Could we bring him home to Victoria as he could be a nice acquisition as a wingmen, arrests some of our outside running problems.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

As far as Trengove goes i will say it again, you can never have too many quality talls!
At the moment we are 1 tall forward short.
Gumby is forever broken and in all honesty not a great chance to ever fully recover or be the player he could have been.

We need another forward who can take a grab, if Trengove can release one of Carlisle or Hooker then we have another marking forward rather than having to rely on the rucks all the time.

On top of that Pears IMO is still suited more to Feltchers role as the third defender. I do not see him as our number 1 full back. He is best suited to zoning and attacking the ball and then using his foot skills rather than being a full back.

Good player but given our luck with injury do we need to bring in another who is continually injured ?

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

I think Monfries is too important now to trade away.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

Really?

IMO he's surlpus to our forward needs, especially with Crameri, not to mention Carlisle as another marking option.

He played a great game against Adelaide on the wing, but has been pretty poor otherwise. Still making really stupid decisions that undo all of his hard work.

If we could get something decent for him, I'd be showing him the door. Likewise Davey.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

He's not much of a forward lately though. Seeing run off half back and start in the centre has changed my views on this guy. He has skill and after his admission has sort of stiffened up a bit. Davey can go though.

It probably depends on who we can land i guess.

He's playing on a wing, and there's plenty better out there.

Add Dempsey to a HBF and put Heppell to the wing. Add Winderlich to the forwardline and put Reimers or Colyer to the wing. Both add more long term than Monfries IMO.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

seeing him moved out of the forwardline, and the fact the forwardline has survived, if not improved a little, without him leads me to think even less of him.

he has moved up the ground, bar one good game (well 3 quarters), he has been horrific since.

we are due for his one good game in 4, but I would be thinking about dropping the bloke with a few guys due back the next week or 2.

imho Monfries is the type that while he remains a permanent member of the 22, will hinder our progress to becoming a consistently good side as there is really no excuse for his continued poor use of the ball at this stage of his career.

time to trade

I think Davey has to be put on the table, even a 3rd round pick would be a bonus. What a bout a deal with Davey and maybe somebody like lovett-murray or dyson for a swap with Colin Slyvia?? Could be a win for both clubs

Huh! No chance of that going through.

Davey for Bate I'd be interested in.

Not sure why Bate is on the outter over there, seems to me like he'd be a great 3rd tall in a forward line. Not sure if that's what we need but I'd consider it.

Re: 2011 Official Trade/Delisting Discussion Thread [Part 3]

The club has to make room on the list for new players, sorry to state the obvious. Here is the list of players who's contracts run out at the end of this year.

Colyer, Daniher, Dyson, Fletcher, Hardingham, Lonergan, Long, Lovett-Murray, Prismal and Welsh.

Based on form and selection this year Colyer, Hardingham and Lonergan stay. The club has said that Prismal and Fletcher will be offered a contract.

This leaves:

Daniher, Dyson, Long, Lovett-Murray and Welsh.

There are rumours that Welsh and Daniher will both retire. I think Long will struggle to get his body right, but I did think the same of Dempsey after he broke his leg running on his own.

We can't just delist players like Lovett-Murray as we need to keep some leadership around the club. Watson, McVeigh, Fletcher, Hille and Lovett-Murray provide plenty of that. Of course maybe another year down the track we can afford to let go of a few of them.

Anyhow I think it there is tough desisions for the list managers at Essendon this year.

Personally I would, assuming rumours are true, retire Daniher and Welsh, delist/trade Dyson and rookie Long.

That leaves us with the rookie list.

Jenkins, Neagle, Quinn, Slattery, Silverlock and Webster. I'm guessing Neagle, Quinn, Slattery and Silverlock are gone from that. And adding Long to the list that will give us 3 more rookie spots.

So we will have 3 draft picks and 3 rookie picks. I personally wouldn't be chasing a trade. Obviously if Trengove is desperate to come to Essendon that is something to consider. I would not like to give up our first round pick though as we need to keep building the midfield.

Next year will be a different scenario though. If we can finally have some good luck with injuries we will have a better picture of our list and glaring deficiencies will be more obvious. Way too early to make a call but could well be the last year for Slattery, Davey and McVeigh. Monfries would want to find some consistency and if we do get Trengove Hooker could be trade bait. Hibbered wouldn't want to do anything silly again either.
