I agree about wahgunyah. Travelling nice now, but some big tests coming up. But I believe they have improved. They lost to Chiltern and Barny last year and won comfortable this year. Time Will tell.

Anyone watch Ruth v Mitta. Heard Mitta were very dirty, king hits and broken jaws to some ruth players. I wasnt their so I dont know apart from what I hear.

It was indeed a very physical game (well it certainly looked that way fromo the sideline) and a few of our players have definitely come off a bit worse for wear.

Great game of footy, it had lead changes, physicallity, and an unpredictable wind presence. Whilst disappointing to finish on the wrong side of the ledger, all is certainly not lost down at catland. Still plenty of good signs in my opinion.

The mark and goal in the dying seconds to take the lead from us was an exceptional piece of play.

I totally agree with the general concensus that its a very even competition this year which is great for the league. The Thurgoona and KSC game must have also been a good one. Both teams looks strong on paper. Mitta, Wahgunyah and Barny appear to be big improvers this season. Beechworth should still go ok. I also thought DMB looked ok when we played them despite the fact they havnt registered a win yet

No thuggery or anything like that, both teams served up the physicality, just a good tough game of country footy, Mitta lucky to escape us for the win though. The last grab of the day was a decent hanger

So who's gunna win this week??? Some really good games on. Mitta v Thurgoona will be a cracker but the dogs will take home the bone. How many will Monkey Magic kick this week?.He's on fire along with all of Barny. How much will Saints lose by ?. Bring on the footy it was a real long weekend without any footy on.:thumbsu:

Weekend of surprising results, Beechworth smashed Rutherglen, thurgoona absolutely smashed Mitta, and the wahgunyah juggernaut keeps ticking along, surely wodonga would be better off sitting out for 12 months then getting hammered each week for the rest off the year, the young ones would be getting nothing out of this.
did rutherglen have some injuries or are beechworth finding there form after a maybe little hang over from last year has passed, not much in the paper today about the round, bit dissapointing unless you follow the hume.

Right on the money Jimmy about the Border. No pics and more about the hume/nsw footy leagues. Look at the top 2 and who would have thought about those 2 this early. Poor old Saints not much can be said or done. You must give credit to those guys that do play for them and do try. I bet Plugger didn't go more then 25 metre's out on the weekend. If you do look at the top teams each has a guy kicking a bag each week.

What will be match of the round this week???

Match of the around for me would be Thurgoona v Wahgunyah. Thurgoona the league favourites and the Lions first serious test. This will give all an indication where they are at I feel. Beechworth may just be finding their feet, or is it that rutherglen have been playing well above themselves and have finally hit the ground. Who knows.

3 really interesting games this week for the potential finals contenders at this stage.
Mitta v Beechworth - Result should indicate if Beechworth are up there again or if Mitta have improved enough to go ahead of them.
Rutherglen v KSC - 2 sides that played finals last year with Ruth being a much better side last year, Kiewa look to have improved and Rutherglen look like they have gone backwards, result should either confirm or refute those assumptions.
Thurgoona v Wahgunyah - Prior to the season the dogs would have been certainties in this one but the Lions haven't lost yet so we shall see who the real deal is this week.
For the record i think Mitta will beat Beech at home, Kiewa should have too much depth for Rutherglen, and the Dogs will give Wahgunyah a reality check.
In other games Barny should be too good for Chiltern, DMB v Tallangatta is an interesting one with both sides struggling at the moment and the showdown between the ex-Hoppers who jumped ship to go to DMB..., and sadly its not really worth mentioning the Yack v Wodonga game...

Wahgunyah's test period starts now. After despatching Barny, Chiltern, Dederang & Saints, they now play Thurgoona (away), Rutherglen (home), Mitta (away), Kiewa (home) & Beechworth (away). How many of the 5 would they have to win to be considered contenders ?

I think they would have to win both home games and then win 1-2 of the away games. that would give them a 7-2 or 8-1 win loss record and would set them up to go deep into September.

An interesting round of matches tomorrow with a few of the top teams being asked the question. Barnawartha has only played 1 of the top sides so far and were beaten by Wahgunyah in round 1, so they will be keen to prove they are a genuine contender against Beechworth. If the Tigers can come away with the points up there you can pencil them in for a finals appearance. If not, they may still make it courtesy of a super-nice draw, meeting Mitta, Thurgoona & Rutherglen only once for the year. Rutherglen also will have the heat applied to their season tomorrow, travelling to Wahgunyah & looking for a much needed win. The Human Headline has been very quiet this year, but he got it right in the paper yesterday when he said that it will be tough to get back from 2-4 if they lose, it could've been much worse if Thurgoona kicked straight in Round 1. The Cats have one of the harder draws too, meeting all the other contenders twice. The other game of interest is Kiewa and Mitta, both whom have much harder draws than their mid-table finish last year deserved, so a win tomorrow may be vital come 21st of August.
TIPS:
Thurgoona to beat Tallangatta
Dederang to beat Yack
Chiltern to beat Saints
Beechworth to beat Barny
Wahgunyah to beat Rutherglen
Kiewa to beat Mitta.
Don't forget to thank the umpires as the VCFL stage "Thanks Ump" weekend. We love to hate them but we can't do much without them.
Cheers,
Albert

Any thoughts on the inter league side, Lets get some ideas and some talk happening on this thread.

hate to say it, but i give the TDFL no chance.

fair to say the Hume league has improved significantly (player wise) since last year and apart from Pierri (who won't play interleague) the Tallang league has been far from exciting signing wise. (arguably worse considering Sibraa, Carey, Dillon etc. have all left the league)

anyone disagree?

yep
Donnan Gostellow Hutchins would be equal to those you have mentioned. Although not sure where they would rate against Twitt, Bloom, Lamb etc.. Donnan is rated as one of the best key position players in the region if he makes himself available will help the TDFL's cause

Will admit that those Thurgoona one's slipped my mind.

Donnan would be massive (as you said, provided he makes himself available)

All you can really do right now though is speculate coz it's pretty hard to make an assumption until the final squads are in.

i doubt bradshaw will play for hume, just as i doubt pierri will play for tallangatta.

Anyone got any info on the Tallangatta coach seems he is up there with the saints mentor, he wanted to fight the Dederang bench 2 weeks ago up at Mt beauty and asked one of the Dederang coaching staff out the back after the game surely a club that has lost a few players and is trying to rebuild doesnt need this

After 6 last week I better have another go at tipping some winners:
Thurgoona to beat Yack
Dederang to beat Chiltern
Wodonga to be well beaten by Barny
Rutherglen to beat Tallangatta
Mitta to beat Wahgunyah
Kiewa to beat Beechworth

Yeah the bloke is a nutcase. Played against him last year he tried to fight kids half his size most of the time. Would rate him on par with the saints guru.

Must be why Raiders have been trying to recruit a couple of the Tallangatta kids before the clearance deadline. Hopefully he treats his own players with respect if he can't treat the opposition's with any.
