Re: 2012 Membership - 6,200 [at 28/2]

I'm not sure what the pricing is usually like for Manuka games (I've only been to a couple of games down there) but I'd say the pricing has a lot to do with demand - with the Canberra connection and a seated capacity of just 10,000 at Manuka they must be anticipating a large demand for reserved seats. Full gold and platinum members also get reserved seats at the Manuka games which further drives demand.

It works out to be $26.67/game for silver, $40 for gold and $60 for platinum. For reference the Sydney memberships work out to $30/game for silver - prime, $30.45 for gold and $38.18 for platinum (with gold and platinum also getting access to the ACT games).

Cheaper than Perth.

I knew someone had mentioned that kind of scarf... I think this was added in the last week or so:

congrats on breaking the 7000 mark guys; stella effort in your first year.. if you break 10,000 by closr of memberships that really would be outstanding. just beat the swans rnd 1 and youre on your way! good luck for the season

Re: 2012 Membership - 4,400 [at 2/2]

Mine arrived today. No idea where the seats exactly are... Better be good! Row K isn't inspiring.
Which membership did you get Mountain Giant?

Mine should be waiting at home too; Silver Premium and I requested upper level, hoping for the new south-east stand...

Platinum. Hoping for the best seats at Skoda straight up. I nearly went for silver new stand as well.. But I wanted to be next to the members bar. That is what tipped it for me.

Ha I couldn't justify the premium for convenient access to the bar... but damn I wanted to. :)

Giants just tweeted that over 100 have signed up at Manuka today, decent result and there will probably be more as the day goes on.

yep i was at the game today. There certainly was lots of activity around the memberships tent - and there was a helluva lot of charcoal and orange around! They'd have signed up many ACT members today.

My other observations as a first time visitor to Manuka Oval:
  • Team played well in the second quarter and patches of the game. Tigers could have buried them if they kicked straight but there is a lot to like about the Giants.
  • Lots of non giants/tigers supporters in the crowd - i.e. people who just love the footy and miss it living in Canberra (like me).
  • Manuka Oval really could use a facelift. There is a master plan and Demetriou said in an interview in te Canberra Times today that they would chip in if the goverment did. If the 3 games per year prove to be a success (i.e 15k crowds), then they should go for it (option 2 in my opinion)

Re: 2012 Membership - 7,264 [at 16/3]

Hope you guys can get to 8k before the Swannies game! :)

Are you aiming for 10k by the time membership sales close?
I think there will definitely be a big push to get to 8k by the opening game.

The line from the club is that they're aiming high at 17k, but I think 10-12k is a more realistic number which they'd be happy with.

What's the geographic makeup of GWS's memberships? Hopefully for GWS's sake western sydney makes up about 50%.

There were some stats from when they hit 6,000 (and they've now of course increased the total by 25%) which said 38% from GWS, 29% from Canberra and the remaining 33% from other areas (of which some portion would no doubt include people on the 'Eastern' side of Syndey).

So potentially a max of around 5200 from western sydney. Thats not too bad at all, considering that memberships in Sydney (western sydney moreso) is not a common thing fans here will get. Thats one reason why everyone needs to take them only on face value.

I have noticed that there are afew GWS fans in here. Questions for you guys...
How many of you in this forum (like me)are born in sydney or importantly western sydney and didnt really grow up with AFL(not at all for me), but now going to follow the giants or, both outside of sydney/NSW and live up here for work etc and going to follow the giants due to afl being easier to watch again...

Those that I know supporting the Giants (myself and a couple of us from work) are largely supporters of other clubs who want to jump on board. All of the ones that I know of hail from outside NSW, but that's more due to our company's hiring system than a statement on the Giants. :)

According to this Canberr times article, they sold 144 memberships yesterday and I dare say the vast majority of those would have been ACT memberships so those figures for Canberra would have increased a tad.

off-topic, but... I grew up watching and loving rugby league, lived in Tamworth, then Macquarie Fields and started following Wests, moved to Grafton and back down to Mt Druitt. Never played anything but rugby league and touch footy as a kid. In all that time, by the time I was 14, I'd probably watched maybe ever 3 games of AFL footy on TV, all Swans games with a die-hard friend.
When I moved to Tassie, everyone followed footy, but I still used to stay up till 3 in the morning to watch the NRL games and only watched AFL with friends, played rugby union (cos there was no league to play!); Sydney became my 'de-facto' team. Once I moved up to Qld, I largely ignored AFL except during the finals and started playing league again.

It was Karmichael Hunt joining the Suns that got me watching, but it felt weird trying to support Gold Coast Suns. Then when GWS was born, I got genuinely excited about Australian Football, switched codes to playing AFL myself, started following our every game last year etc. I still love my rugby league, but now I love footy just as much, and am excited to have a western sydney team in what is the biggest and best sporting competition in Australia. so GWS is definitely playing its role in attracting a new fan base to footy.
