It's getting to that time of year again where we need to keep draft discussion to the one place.

The National Draft will obviously be the catalyst for discussion but we'll keep this thread rolling until the Rookie Draft is complete in December.

This OP (including our picks and the ND order) will be updated regularly with any other related information and links.

NAB AFL DRAFT ORDER:

I think the only way Adelaide would even consider parting company with Rory Sloane is if we are awarded the number 1 pick by way of PP and on trade it allowing them to draft Tom Boyd to fill the hole left by Kurt Tippett and we come away with Sloane and another gun mid with pick 3. There would probably be other picks and players that would need to be involved as well.

Haven't really looked deep into the draft tbh. Stayed in the top 10 so far.

Tiputingiti (sp?) would be a fair crack for a rookie spot though, heard his name a bit.

At the moment my ideal draft would probably be:

Pick 2: Aish
Pick 19: Luke Dunstan/Dom Sheed
Pick 35: Dayle Garlett

I know a lot of people don't agree with this but he's worked as hard as anyone this year and we need people with that kind of resilience. Hopefully playing for the Dees would make him realise that the hard work isn't done yet if he wants to do well (at least for the next two years). And it's not exactly glamorous being a Melbourne player, either.

Not sure about Dom Sheed slipping to 19, nor Dunstan, which is why I've included them both. Would be happy with either, or even Dumont. Getting these three (Aish, Sheed/Dunstan/Dumont and Garlett) into our midfield next year would be a massive coup.

If we do get the PP I'm all for trading it, and I think there's a good chance the AFL might make us do so. Not sure what we'd get for it though. If we don't trade it, Matty Scharenberg is a serious player. Has the potential to be a star through the midfield even though he's played mostly in defence and attack. Tall, quick, good skills, and most importantly, has a big body. The Oliver Wines of this year's draft IMO.

We'd also have an almost all South Australian midfield group. Trengove, Toumpas, Tapscott, Scharenberg, Aish and Dunstan (potentially), to go with Jones, Sylvia and Viney, the latter being half-South Australian really. And then there's Billy Stretch...

Also, bonus picks:

Pick 54: Chris Cain (Port Melbourne)

PSD Pick 2: Taylor Adams (yeah this probably won't happen, but eh.)

If this happens, Melbourne would be over the moon! We couldn't be that lucky

Version 20 of my ideal draft... I know I post a lot of these but bare with me ;)

Delist/Retirement
Tom Couch (Rookie)
Nathan Stark (Rookie)
Troy Davis
Tom Gillies
Aaron Davey (Retired)
Joel MacDonald (Retired)
Josh Tynan
Neville Jetta

NATIONAL
Pick 2: James Aish
No brainer.

Pick 20: Nathan Freeman/Marcus Bontempelli
Project midfielders. Both are super talents with some really attractive traits. Stars in the making if developed right.

Pick 38: Zac Jones

Small defender. Helps that his brother Nathan is a cult hero at the club but fills a need regardless.

Pick 56: Marlon Motlop/George Hampson/Chris Cain/Ben Ross
Mature age midfielder. Given out recent success, I don't see why we shouldn't take a punt again. These two will be hungry, and can contribute straight away.

Pick 75: (r) James Magner
Must. Otherwise we have to delist him, which, I don't want to happen.

Pick 92: Pass

ROOKIE
Dayle Garlett - Praying that clubs still have doubts and our new coach has the balls to pull the trigger.
Jake Kolodjashnij - Our KPD stocks are thin, we have no decent cover in our 2s so it's time to invest.
Neville Jetta - Redraft
Josh Tynan - Redraft

Time for Neville Jetta to go. Will be 24 before next season starts and aside from the start of his career where he got games for the sake of giving youngsters games, he's been ignored by every person in charge. Wouldn't bother rookie drafting him.

I forgot about Zac Jones! Not sure if he'll last until Pick 38, as an under 18 AA. Wouldn't mind taking him at 19 if all potential sliders are gone. There's a lot of midfield depth in this draft...

If we pass on Chris Cain at 54 I will not be impressed.

TPM, Scharenberg has played a bit in the midfield this year I think, and looked pretty solid. Has the skills to make the most of it.

I think Zac is really likely to be a 30+ pick, he's a good solid player - but you get the feeling that some clubs may overlook his potential to be a pretty good AFL player for a bloke with high 'upside' in that range.

Cain, I'm not huge on - I know he's greatly performed in the VFL, but he's a short term solution.

As for Scharenberg, yeah I think he could be a really elite mid - he hasn't done it in the Champs or in the SANFL though.

His best footy has been played in a Hodge role (more then a Goddard role) - certainly worthy of a high pick.

Jake Kolodjashnij- isnt this bloke a top 20 prospect?

Not something I'd be taking a punt on

Sellar and Davis are decent defensive cover. I have no idea how anyone expects a rookie pick to be better.

Well we are stuck with Pederson, so I reckon we only need to keep one of Sellar or Davis, my money is on keeping Davis. Sellar does the exact same roles as Pedersen, except we aren't stuck in a contract with him.

Where is everyone with the PP.

My personal thoughts are that we will get one. The AFL can't allow us to linger at the base of the table for the next few years. We need a new sponsor and how best to sell us but with the best pick .. we will take Boyd and we will then trade on Watts for a mid.

I can even see Watts for Adams unless Blues will give up a good mid. The GWS trade will make it easier for AFL to help Dees out with a PP.

With Hogan and Boyd .. the club can sell some hope to a sponsor and they can get on earl, if we do get a PP we can trade that .. would be good to get Slone but I think we may have to add a sweetener like Tapscott

That would add some value to our list in sponsor terms ...

Hogan
Boyd
Adams
Slone

- hopefully we can pick up something later on with a second round pick or talk someone into the pre season draft (we have to pay overs)

Thou I feel we will be let down again.

We should get a pick, if past performances for PPs are anything to go by. It's discretionary and all that, but objectively we're clearly a basket case and need as much help as we can get to sorting ourselves out. In all probability we're looking at a two win season where we beat a bunch of kids and got through by the skin of our teeth against the Dogs... and will probably get done by by those sides in the return legs. We've got an embarrassing percentage and a list that doesn't seem to have nearly as much upside and development in it as it should.

We should get one and I think we will, question is where will it be?

I think we'll get a PP. Initially I thought it would be #1 for all the reasons outlined above but I now think it will be a beginning of 2nd round pick.

Adelaide are banned & Essendon is likely to be banned from the 1st round, but GWS have a mid 1st round compo pick & GC have an end of 1st round compo pick meaning that there are still 18 selections.

For no particular reason, I think the AFL may want to keep all the other teams onside but also look to be giving us another hand by giving that start of 2nd round PP. If they do this it is unlikely to be met by much argument from the other teams, whereas the #1 pick would have huge coverage & argument!
