The club has no control over ground availability. If UQ Sport decides to shut the ovals then no-one is allowed on, and they regularly make that decision far too prematurely. I can't make comment on the alternate venue option as I have no idea what goes on at a committee level, but I can assure you that those guys would have been doing everything they can to get a game happening somewhere. As a student I can also assure you it has nothing to do with exams, as all bar a handful of us finished exams during the week.

not saying the ground is not closed because of real concerns for its well being, lets face it did shower for most of the day. It pisses me off is it is too easy for clubs to call games off . Well the onus should be on UQ to offer the alternate venue , not Coomera. Coomera should be able to say , our players are available on Saturdays as per the draw and the convention that we play a Saturday competition.
In not accepting offered alternatives for this weekend adds to the disgrace of UQ over the last few years.

This is part of what pisses me of the most the fact I as the opposition president call 2 of the closest grounds to UQ only to find no one has contacted them to even see if they are free, they are free I tell them this and still they choose to not play.
Ok the ground is closed but do what you can to make the game go on, sorry if it is inconvenient but you know what? driving to Brisbane to play during the week after work to play isn't real convenient for us either considering we all sign up to play on Saturdays. And to suggest that it would be fair to split the points.... we won by 191 points in round 3 for f's sake. You have improved but not that much. We lost 2 points for the wash out against calamvale and now this would put Beenliegh right within grasp of top spot.

If that is the case why not travel to Coomera and play like we offered? Thats the excuse we were given. "All our boys have exams".

The fact of the matter is that I was told by an AFLQ official that the game could not be played because UQ had gone above this persons head and said that they have "too many players with exams" and playing at Coomera would mean they had to run straight onto the field without warmup.

So we then suggested a delayed start in both grades and were told that some exams didn't finish until 5.30.

The ground closure was a scapegoat and the fact is the sun is shining, BOTH grounds are open, and we have 44 Coomera blokes not getting a game today.

Both grounds are NOT open.

So far from the peanut gallery we've heard the rescheduling blamed on UQ:
  • Having exams
  • Having uni holidays
  • Wanting to save the oval for Div 1
  • Wanting to avoid playing Coomera
  • Wanting to take advantage of the bye next week
  • Not having enough numbers
How about you guys pick one reason to whinge and complain about an AFLQ decision rather slandering a club on a public forum with the first thought that crosses your little minds.

To clarify again, Coomera was told the ground was closed. However we were then told that the game could not be moved to another venue because of exams.

We have also been told that the field was used on Thursday night without issue, and have made some enquiries about the availability of the ground and have been told the ground is not closed (as I did not directly hear any of this I cannot confirm its accuracy).

They are the facts as I know them (we have not made comment on anything else).

I do not believe that the game should have been cancelled rather than relocated. Any other team would have had to relocate if their ground was not available. Carrara were set to play at Robina earlier this year due to the fact.

Sorry but please do not try to have a go at Coomera on this one. We tried to get the game on and it did not happen. I have spoken to AFLQ directly and have been given the facts behind the decision.

I would have to say I am in a very well informed position.

Not having a go at Coomera at all, I'm saying that there are a lot of people from various places throwing a lot of mud on here for various reasons.

I've always thought Coomera are a great club to play against and I'm sure you would have been doing everything possible to get the game on. I completely agree that a relocation would have been by far the preferred option. I don't know why that wasn't able to occur and I wish it had because I just want to play football.

But knowing the guys who organise our club and how hard they work to make sure that all of our teams are accommodated for on the park every week I am certain that there must have been a valid reason. Hypothesising about why it wasn't able to be relocated isn't going to get any of us anywhere when none of us actually know.

Hi all. Long time reader first time poster. As the name suggests no prizes for guessing im affiliated with coomera but may I add I know nothing more on the situation than what has been posted here.

This is well and truley the most farcical decision I have seen in all my time in football. Come on pp33 from all your posts I have read over the time u seem to be in the mix of the uq hierarchy. Care to shed some more light as it is hard to explain to missus why I cant take the field this week and I need to raid the savings account for my adventure to the local watering hole.

May a penetrometer reading help in future cases of these ground closures. I am sure our learned friends at UQ may be able to devise a system.

What happen in the end regarding rd 5 last year??? UQ seen to be a common denomination here.

Wish all the lads lucky enough to play our great game today all the best

I have in writing from the Kedron President stating that we are free to use their ground should we need it. I have spoken to the Wests Bulldogs president and he has stated that the ground is available for use tomorrow but may just need to move the games back a little. I have spoken to UQ sport at 8am who again have stated Oval 7 is not closed and have no reason why the game is called off. In round 2 the game was not called off until 10am saturday morning so we had every chance for the games to go on.
As I see it no attempt to has been made to make the game go forward so UQ have left them selves open to accusation. And don't worry we will do plenty of complaining at AFLQ level but just not on here.

Agree that it seems to have opened a can here and that's not the intention.

I too am disappointed as I have always had a good respect for UQ on and off the field and just wanted to play.

I'm just going off what I know which is what disappoints me. The game could've been moved and the fact is it wasn't.

In fact in Rd 2 Calamvale had also offered to travel to Coomera if needed but in the end although we were ok to play at either ground it was only called off due to the ENTIRE round being cancelled.

I'd love to get more involved but don't have the time unfortunately. I don't know what conversations were had yesterday, but if we were able to get an available field I'm sure we wouldn't all be sitting at home on a Saturday arvo. No one wants that.

Once again PP, there were 3 fields available (and discrepancies in regards to Field 7s availability).

I am telling you the words out of AFLQs mouth was that the decision was based on UQ having too many players in Exams. This is not a shit stir. This is the honest truth of what I was told.

Last year we had games where we had upwards of 12 players at weddings and still took the field.

I am not here to make up stories. I am 100% disappointed in what has occurred. With more notice I'm sure that UQ and Carrara could have switched the bye rounds!

I'm sure 90% of UQ blokes wanted the game played, but I'm sure that there are some in your club who took an opportunity for reasons only they know, and that we can only attempt to comprehend, and had the game cancelled.

Yes time is quite precious hey pp. At least the arvo wasnt lost to thumb twiddling and I was able to enjoy this beautiful sunshine painting our clubrooms. But why is this time of the uq boys more important than that of us blue collar lads at coomera. Why should we reschedule our busy lifes to accomadate your sides in making this round up? Its a Saturday competition mate, lets keep it to saturdays hey? I am sure all on here would agree.

In all honesty I also studied tertiary education but also found time to balance in football, or if need be make priorities. Maybe this is a new unit UQ could offer. Time Management 101. Otherwise dont worry u will soon learn this when u finally exit your cushy life on campus and join us in the real world.

Sorry I am not normally like this but this decision today has really got up my goat. Not much time for us old dinosaurs left to play and I dont want to spend my saturdays painting quite yet.

Hard enough for family men to sneak in a training session and game day without now being asked to reschedule to accommodate this ridiculousness.

44 fee paying customers of AFLQ have been ripped off this weekend. Enough said.

This is all too confusing. The grounds closed, it's not closed. Other grounds were available but apparently unexceptable. Players were unavailable due to exams but PP33 says only a handful. Seems like their just trying to protect the 2's double chance come finals. 2 points is better than maybe none.

Stacking won't be out of the question then either?
