I would rather give Claye Beams and Polks a game rather than Raines. Raines had a great season last year, but Beams and Polks are much more versatile and they can kick more goals than Raines. Raines is better stopper than both of them.
Do people think Docherty shouldve been given a go?
I probably would too. I'm not arguing that Raines is fantastic and must be in the team ahead of others. Simply that he is better than a deliberately selective and narrow set of stats would indicate.

Yeo seems much more composed and creative then Doc at this stage. Im sure he will get there soon enough though.

Last year Rich only hand a handful more Effective Kicks per game than Raines.

Rich also averaged less than 5 tackles, clearances, marks and inside 50s per game. But he did average over 3 clangers per game.

Raines was just outside our top 10 for average number of disposals and goals scored and was top 5 in tackles.

...What does all of that prove...pretty much nothing.

Simply put - anyone can cherry pick a contrived set of stats to make a player sound good or bad.

OK then, please let us know which of Raines' stats are good as I can only see bad. Looking forward to reading your contrived stats (positive) :thumbsu:

You can't see that he was just outside our top 10 for average number of disposals and goals scored and was top 5 in tackles? You can't see that he came 11th in our B&F?

I only looked at stats that I feel a tagger who attended the 2nd most centre bounce clearances should be assessed on: Tackles, Pressure acts, Contested Possession %, Clearances - Raines is not very good in these. In fact he's quite poor. You make it sound like a chose contested marks inside 50 and tap outs to advantage

The facts are there - obviously Voss and co. agreed :footy:

Not in the Top 10 in disposals for the 300+ centre clearances he attended, in 90% game time and an average of 4 efficient kicks per game is not a positive stat for mine....maybe you are happy accepting mediocrity, but I for one am not.

Look, I am not here to change your thoughts on Raines, I'm just happy that he's not playing tomorrow (barring unforseen circumstances).

Regardless of any of the stats...=11th in the club champ award says you're doing something right

Many reasons, but the main one is that he averages less than 5:

  • Effective kicks per game
  • Tackles per game
  • Pressure acts per game
  • Clearances per game
These are damning statistics for a tagger / player who attended the 2nd most centre bounces in 2012.

Simply put - he's just not a very good player

Happy that he's not playing.

So Raines wasn't playing and we still got smashed at the centre bounces as one of our attacking midfielders was playing a defensive role badly.

What's your excuse for our bad clearance performance now? Because previously you've identified Raines as the main culprit.

raines instead of polkinghorne, beams start instead of Cornelius and play doc or lester sub

We definitely missed Raines ability to apply pressure on the opposition ball carrier, not that it would have made a difference with the whole team being stagnant on the day.

His quick kicks forward, tagging, applying defensive pressure better than anyone else, and his increasing ability to kick goals from stoppages can be a difference in games, and that is why I would have him as a starter unless he performs poorly.

You can't drop Ace for a midfielder it will absolutely destroy our forward structure.. mind you after this week that forward structure isn't looking that awesome anyway.

I don't think after a game like that you can single out individuals for poor performance, everyone was terrible. So I'd hope we just see changes that are structural (we need a tagger), or forced (due to injury).

I actually thought the supply was the main issue. It was so bad that it actually caused the Bulldogs to lauch their attacks through anticipation of our inept disposal into the forward line. Goodes' switching of play was too easily done.

goose is gone, which is much of a problem considering adelaides small forward line, so I'm assuming Docherty gets his first callup, as for polkinghorne I didn't even realise he was playing until the last quarter, if you are trying to defend him good on you! definitely need to bring raines in to cover Dangerfield. Cornelius out would really make that much of an impact for our team, he was horrid, I cringed when he got near the ball, yes he should get another week although another performance like that is not at all good enough.

out: goose polkinghorne Ace(maybe)
In: Doc Raines lester

Team Round 2

Yeo Merret Patful
Golby Hanley Adcock

Redden Moloney Rockliff

Zorko Brown Bewick
Green Martin Mcgrath

Longer Rich Raines

int: Lester Karnezis Beams Sub:Docherty

Bump, we're at the halfway mark of the season. Have any players replaced existing players in their best 22?

It sure has for mine. For mine, the starting 22 if injury free and suspension free:

FB: Docherty, Merrett, Patfull
HB: Yeo, Clarke, Golby
C: Hanley, Rich, Beams
HF: Rockliff, Brown, Zorko
FF: Green, Staker, Bewick
R: Leuenberger, Redden, Moloney
Bench: Raines, Black, Lester, McGrath

Emg - Adcock, Karnezis, Polkinghorne

Lester has solidified his position in the best 22 with strong performances this year. It was him or Karnezis and I went for Lester.

Clarke has been superb for us. A rookie draft prospect who has become one of the better KPD's in our team. A lot more mobile than Maguire too.

On form, I reckon Docherty has been better than Adcock. But won't be dropped because of his experience and on-field leadership. Frankly, he's regressed this year.

While Polkinghorne has improved since his return to the senior team, still feel like Beams has a higher ceiling than Pokinghorne because of his attacking flair.

I think I would try to find a spot for Harwood in there somewhere.
