Preview 2014 Draft Our First Pick - Who Do We Take?

Remove this Banner Ad

Hey Frank. Nice first round selections lately. Can you please improve on your selections after this though as its really ******* us around.

If guys like Luke Parker are around and you have people telling you he's a gem who watched everyone of his games that year, listen to them. To you they may just be fans and know nothing, but sometimes they know more than you.

Just saying.

Plus tigs2010 knows a hell of a lot more than most. Now back to that lab with Blair and this year, get it right please. No more crap. Quality.

Thanks for your input. You and tigs2010 are recruiting geniuses. I look forward to 2018 when you inform us of this years "obvious choices".

The day that a recruiter "listens to a fan" who tells him a player is "what we need", and then does what the fan tells him, is the day that the recruiter should quit his job due to incompetence. We have a professional team of recruiters. What if 10 fans approach him, all with different favourites, all saying they've watched every minute someone has played, and then the recruiter has 10 different players he "must" pick? Jackson and his team have an exhaustive approach, and they would have already done an exhaustive assessment of every player on the radar.

You clearly have at least one or two contacts in the afl industry, and you clearly have an interest and an ability in assessing draftable players. I like to read your opinion on whom to pick. However, the foolish argument you are promoting here does not enhance your credibility.

It is not a foolish argument at all IMO. To disregard categorically fans comments would be foolish as any super forecaster would know. If you are not aware of this go back through the literature on the forecasting profession.

Sure fans comments are not gospel but it doesn't mean they have no weight at all either. In the old days plenty of clubs relied on scouts and here say to get leads on players to have a look at. Where there is smoke sometimes there is fire and others simply have more info about players than others would like off the radar simply because they are closer to that players circumstances not necessarily because they may or may not be an expert!

For example, this year I have been looking at Paige C phantom draft. I do not know the person but some descriptions and words he or she uses suggest to me he or she knows something about good traits of footy players to look at. Plus based on my vision of some highlights the ratings are not too out of order from my perception. So I go to the phantom draft and look for commentary that interests me about listed players. Couple of players of McDonald and Mclean gets me interested in how they are being described. They might be absolute duds and the commentary utter BS but , in my experience IMO they would be worth a second look, have a look at their highlights and perhaps after more due diligence they deserve a second consideration.

All super forecasters are looking to get better through enhanced review and analysis including other angles to consider. I doubt Francis and the team will not have gone back and looked at the Parker miss and tried to figure out why we missed it and what we could have done to avoid a repeat if at all possible!

I reckon if we keep this pick we're gonna take Duggan. Just a feeling.

Think for Richmond it will be like last year. There will be 10 or so guys they love at the pick and hope one of them was to fall like Lennon last year.

It's a fascinating draft that's for sure.

I believe St.Kilda will take Petracca if they keep the number one pick. But GWS want that pick badly. We know the Saints have met with KJ and JOR lately. I'm sensing a deal of Pick 1, established veteran and a later pick for Pick 3, KP and JOR. Something along those lines.

So I believe Petracca will be number one and deserves to be.

Melbourne can do anything. But Roos is known to love Brayshaw. He tends to have power to make recruiters decisions. We know they have met with him and watched him a lot. So at this stage, I believe he will be the second pick.

Pick 3 for Saints may become Pick 4. If the rumored 7 year deal happens at Freo. So who knows who goes number 3. If it's the Saints I say McCartin but won't discount 2 meter Peter. If Melbourne I'm thinking a shock like Laverde as Melbourne genuinely want to build that midfield.

I won't talk about Brisbane, but interesting news has broken lately. Carlton heavy into Laverde I believe. May not even make it to Carltons pick.

For our pick should the above eventuate?

Trade the thing for Shiel or Mitchell. If we can't do this, Weller or Duggan. Whoever is left. We will get a good player at our selection.

Haha I hate it when people do the old hindsight thing such as Fyfe and Griffiths as much as you. This isn't a hindsight complaint though. Pull your tampon out and relax. ;)

Have added Kyle Langford to the mix as it appears that the kid is climbing up the rankings given the success of Bontempelli this year. Not only that but the kid is talented going by all the reports about him.

When you look at this group Francis is really going to have fun picking out the kid we take, if we keep the pick. For mine I'm split between Duggan and Weller as they both bring what we need, i.e pace and skill. At this stage Duggan is slightly ahead as he seems a little bigger than Weller, however it could change if come combine it's shown that Weller has put on some weight. The other one I'd like to see us take if on the board is Ahern but not sure he is going to be around come pick 11/12, whereas the other 2 are almost assured of being on the board.

Those stats are not particularly impressive

A particular players stats or in general?

I know in some games guys were played in different positions which would have effected their averages. While others like a Petracca or Brayshaw were left to play their normal roles every week.

In general. Football at TAC cup level from what I'm lead to believe doesn't have much defense so I would have thought it would be a hell of alot easier to rack up more than 20 disposals per game if you were going to consider yourself an elite young player. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you extrapolate those numbers over a full game I reckon they're pretty impressive.

Laverde and Ahern would be averaging over 25, Weller 27, Pickett 21, De Goey 22.
Not to mention any injuries that stop a game. Sometimes they create a 35 minute quarter. At this level it's just 5 mins they don't play. Nor do they do the cheap kicking across half back racking up touches like at AFL.

This is the sort of info I was after. The typical footy supporter like myself has no way to judge whether or not the stats given mean anything. Cheers:thumbsu:

I've got him 13th but that includes Heeney and Moore who we can't get. So really 11th.
I really like him. Just watched some highlights again and reckon he should be in the mix for our pick along with Weller, Ahern and Duggan, given my faves Lever and Laverde will probably be gone, as will Pickett.

De Goey, Ahern and Weller are all Jan-Feb birthdays, while Duggan is December, which gives him an edge. But De Goey is the best one-on-one player amongst them for mine. Something about him. Reminds me of Taylor Garner from a couple of years ago, with a touch of - dare I say it - Fyfe (without the high marking).

Do you think WCE are going to take Pickett?

I haven't watched anywhere near as much this year so it's probably not that interesting. Maybe after combine.

Got any rumours who we want this year? I haven't heard any since we had our hearts break over Petracca destroying the season.

Thats pretty much correct 'EXCEPT' When 100.000 people tell you that Dyson Heppell is the best player at our selection yet Jackson has only eyes for the kid who's family has the resturant in perth that our scouts eat at & Jackson loves the pasta there.

Sometimes you really just need to see whats in front of your nose rather than try to find the diamond in the rough
