2015 Delistings

It should be an interesting off season.
We are now only able to start seriously cutting some deadwood that has been sitting on the list for the last few years.
The squad is starting to look stronger.
I would not be surprised to see Lowden cut after one year, not anywhere near AFL level.
Along with Siggins, Pods & Reilly.
I'm sure there will be a trade in there somewhere also this year.

My preference is for Thompson to retire (or be ushered out).

I think he club is genuinely considering this but is waiting to see exactly what happens during the trade period. The future of Lyons, Kerridge and Grigg will have a bearing I reckon (along with Danger of course).

The lack of extension is a little intriguing. Thommo has stated he wants to play on and you'd think a one year deal wouldn't be too difficult a stretch. I think there's still the $100k discount for veterans as well and he's not going to be on big money. But still no extension despite many thinking he's had a great year and near certain to go around again. What's holding up this extension?

Could be getting moved on, could be that he'll get whatever is left in the cap (+ $100k) once the trade period is done.

Option 2 makes some sense. I'd suggest that there's a chance that apt here's a couple of players who might not be as keen to sign if he's going around again. Plus another who's contracted that might want out as well. We've always been comfortable making statements like, "you can't play A B & C in the same team". I'd suggest that B & C will only hang around so long.

Just an alternative scenario. I reckon the 'whatever is kept in cap' option has legs also.

we cannot have players like Wright in the side where others like Lyons and Knight and Kerridge can play exactly the same role but to a higher level. Wright has reached his ceiling, he's just not good enough.

I'm sick of the boys club mentality at the AFC, if we want to be successful we need to replace these players immediately & blood the youngsters or suffer long term.

Nailed it. What's mentioned above - been a problem for years, ever since Blight left.

It's been our Rookies, along with Betts, that have made the difference this year.

The Crows Hierarchy has never accepted the concept of rebuilding, even though every other AFL club does. Captain Fumbles (VB), Thompson, MacKay, Wright....they all have to go - no question about it. Whether or not any other players join them is open for debate.

For Mine.

Senior List
Retire:
JPod & Reilly
Delist:
Martin Siggins Wright

Rookie List
Promote:
OBrien Kelly
Retain:
Ramsay Wilson
Delist Osborn

Leaves us 3 spots on the Senior List to fill and 2 on the Rookie List.

Jack Osborn has already spent 3 years at a Cat. B rookie. He must either be Delisted or promoted. With Greenwood coming in and OBrien promoted i would assume Delisted is the case

There is no way Wright will be delisted IMO, traded perhaps if there is interest but delisted...No.
Traded..? lol To who? Who'd be mad enough, maybe Freo.
He can't kick over 35 metres and has no strengths to his game, he's gone. If we trade him we'd get nothing but a late 3rd or 4th round pick..that's if we find anyone stupid enough to pick him up.

Ok, so with a large amount of signing occurring - what players would be getting nervous?

My expectation is that 2 of M Crouch, CEY and Lyons will be elsewhere next year. With B Crouch to come back into the midfield and Thommo going around again, 2 of these blokes will be consigned to a year of SANFL waiting for injuries to an inside midfielder. They'd also be contending with Kedge if he has an uninterrupted run into next season.

It depends on what else happens, none of these decisions will be made in isolation right now. I've convinced myself that a couple of guys who have played AFL this year will seek more games/money elsewhere next year. If that turns out to be the case and depending on whether we replace them via trade or go to the draft, either or both of Martin and Wright might be needed for depth. So, that might result in a 1 year extension(s).

The fact you or I or all of Big Footy don't rate him is of little significance, clearly the coaches do as is confirmed by 94 AFL games, 16 this season, and even if only a depth player he is very unlikely to get delisted. Phil Walsh I think we all agree was no mug and obviously rated him to a degree to keep selecting him.

I think the emergence of Knight, Cameron and Atkins really puts Wright's form and role under the spot light

I also sense that Kerridge and Grigg will be feeling a little nervous

Maybe it was more a case of Phil backing in the opinion of Teague who clearly loved him for his non-statisticals.

My gut feel is that Wright will get a 1-year contract, and will probably be gone at the end of 2016. It's rare for a player to play 16 games in a season and be cut at the end of it.

I put him in a group with Kerridge & Grigg. All of these players are on the outer and can't force their way into the team at present. All of these players are out of contract. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of these players in the exit lounge this year, more than one would surprise me. Which one the club is most likely to cut, I'm not quite sure.

Realistically, Wright has no trade value whatsoever and there is no club that would be interested in him. He'll be 26 before the start of the next season. While that doesn't exactly make him a dinosaur, he's old enough that few clubs will see any upside in recruiting him.

The trade values of Kerridge & Grigg would be fairly low as well - probably 4th round selections at best. They're young enough that they might attract some attention, but the other clubs would be well aware of their limitations by now (just as Adelaide is).

Lyons is contracted for 2016 and is currently in the team, even if it his jumper is coloured green (as distinct from red, blue & yellow). On that basis, I think he's far less likely to be going anywhere than Kerridge, Grigg & Wright.

I don't think Podsiadly, Reilly, Siggins, Shaw will be at the club next season. Osborn hasn't worked and he should also be delisted. IMO the rest will depend on who comes in and the plans/style of our new coach.

The recent batch of contract signings gives us a pretty clear indication of what's going on.

Siggins is already gone. Radar has already retired. JPod's retirement is assumed to be a certainty.

We know they're working on Lynch's contract. Dangerfield says he hasn't yet decided whether to stay or go, though my gut feel is that he's definitely going (having put things off this long). Thompson has been one of our best players all year (though he had a poor game against Brisbane) and will almost certainly be given a 1-year contract.

We know that O'Brien and Kelly will be upgraded.

That leaves the following players out of contract: CEY, Wright, Grigg, Kerridge, Otten, Shaw and Martin. The club is obviously waiting to see the outcome of trade week, to see what draft picks we have - and thus how many "live" selections they wish to make at the National Draft. Any further delistings will almost certainly come from this group of players, the only real questions are how many of them will be departing and who is closest to the bottom of the pecking order?

I think Radar will be at the AFC next season........as a member of the staff....

CEY iwill most certainly be offered a new deal, Often will also be given another year to force his way back into the 22

IMO Wright, Grigg, Kerridge, Martin and Shaw are all currently depth players under the most pressure
