Searched and couldn´t find a dedicated thread, so thought I would start this up.

A couple of thoughts:

Matty Leunberger, Brisbane Lions, 204cm, 102kgs, 26yo, 96 games

Should we be looking at his guy as a free agent pickup given this may be Sandi´s last year and we may need more depth in the ruck department next year (particularly as Ross rates ruckman as his most important assets)?

West Aussie also. I reckon he would absolutely jump at the chance of going to a premiership contender given the sad state of Brisbane. A bit injury prone, but when fit is a very good ruckman.

Lachie Henderson, Carlton, 195cm, 96kg

With Carlton announcing the rebuild and looking to rebuild through the draft etc would Lachie Henderson be a trade target? First rounder plus a player? Could he be on the table?

He´s quite okay IMO as a defender and forward and would do even better with our midfield feeding him.

Mason Shaw, 197cm, 95kg

This kid should definitely be on our radar IF he shows promise/development this year. Showed some good signs in the SANFL last year but had injury problems. A lot of those injury problems from the first two years however could be put down to him stacking on 20kgs of muscle in his first 2 seasons. Thats a huge jump for an athlete so it is bound to have been behind some of his injury problems.

Apparently his endurance has been an issue, however gaining 20kgs is certainly hindering that. Most sports scientists recommend much less mass gain so you don´t lose endurance. So give it a while and he may come on. He actually tested well for endurance at draft camp initially.

Out of contract come years end and many port posters think he is gone. West Aussie boy and Freo Dockers supporter!

Would take all three there tbh. Henderson however at the right price. The other two would cost us next to nothing and are actually quite likely if both Pav and Sandi retire IMO. Shaw may come if Pav doesn't retire even. Shaw is probably worth a 3rd rounder given his current contract status, while Leuenberger is a free agent. Henderson we are talking huge value there. First two draft picks wouldn't get it done.

Let's not forget Alex Rance either. Less of a chance than Shaw and Leuenberger but more of a chance than Henderson.

A few other names KPP wise
Ryan Shoenmakers
Levi Casboult
Aaron Black

All these three are realistic and aren't exactly going to cost huge salaries. All a bit on the outer at there clubs. Black will almost certainly be targeted (again).

If you believe Pelchen Carlton are chasing two + picks per round and 6 (8 maybe) in the top 50. Henderson is probably their best bargaining chip for getting that second first rounder. Will cost us our first pick and far more for sure. Trading with a team with a new 'Victorian power club, we are so important to the AFL, premiers in 3-20 years' resolve does not sound fun to me.

I'm not sure Henderson would be worth what we'd have to pay.

LBerger is an interesting one. Depending on what happens with Clarke's contract, and how long Sandilands wants to go around for, could be an astute pick up at a good price.

I cant imagine Carlton letting Henderson go - unless it was for a the best forward In the draft. So they will have to negotiate to get the pick likely from Saints / Eagles / maybe Melbourne / GWS doubtful.

I can see us targeting role players - especially KPP

Shoenmakers can play a role
Black - keen but will be interesting to see how his role evolves this year - they don't play him - his value drops considerably
Shaw - assuming he cant get a game for Port this year - realistically he could walk and we could grab him in the PSD... or to be nice we could give them a pick 50 odd. Ports at fault - no game time reduces his currency

Bringing Leuy will effectively make Clarke a forward for his career - both are better as the first ruckman / resting forward

I actually hate to say it but I think we may lose one of the T-Train or Croz... unless they are happy to be patient and ignore the go home factor - I can see them asking for a trade to a vic club where they will likely get a starting role guaranteed (plus side we have depth and we can demand a 1st round in return as they both were previously first rounders and have genuine currency)

so we do have the ability to trade this year if these guys want out

I'd take Henderson for the right price. He's a fairly decent swing man.

Geelong apparently front runners.

Well considering our needs are something like:

KPF, KPF, KPF, KPF, Daylight, The length of the nullabor, An astronomical unit, KPDs and Rucks.

I think Shaw and Black (Aaron) should be targeted via late picks (e.g. Gumbleton) which could hopefully be recouped if a mid or two moves on. We need those guys with potential in those age groups. Henderson's cost would be probably a lot more than he would be worth. Is he actually that good a forward, considering that would be where we'd be most in need.

Leuenberger is a must target if Sandi retires.

What's Carlisle's contract status? Any chance of nabbing him?

No chance in hell.

Sounds like there are a few Talls available, the WA boys would be ideal, and good value. Have to agree that Crozier, Sherro are
the ones that will be targeted by Victorian clubs.

Gee I wish there was some way we could get Hogan home, the lad is going to be a star.

That'd be the dream, he is really looking good.

Realistically I think it's someone like Black or Shaw or who knows and hoping they pull a Jay Schultz.

I am not sure we want Shaw unless Apeness doesn't become the player we hope he will be.

They are very similar players, Black on the other hand would be very good as a 3rd tall.

Looks like Black is behind Waite, Petrie, Brown at the moment. Black looked a shadow of his 2013 self last year.

They drafted Durdin last year who has the potential to be developed as a forward, was quite effective a swing an for South Australia last year.

We could get him cheap. I think he can turn it around.

annnd behind Mason Wood has had some games this season. I feel Black is a real possibility, all depends on how much it will cost.

Black is contracted so will cost us to get him, Shaw for free maybe...

I like the thought ot Leuenberger, if Sandi is winding down, then Clarke and he would be formidable swapping between Ruck and Forward

In isolation, yes. You wouldn't play two of those types of forwards in our team.

Realistically though, what's the chance that Apeness pans out as a genuinely decent, or even just okay, AFL KPF in the next two years (or ever)? I reckon it'd be maybe 10-20% based on guys with his stats and skills taken around his draft position. KPFs are a lottery, more so than any other position really. The more tickets we have the better. It will shit me to tears if the Freo recruiting staff pass up an option to get someone like Shaw for peanuts or nothing because 'Apeness is developing ok'.

Black I think would be a great option for us given his mobility. If I recall he had recurrent shoulder problems through 2014.

I know very little abotu Mason Shaw but I did some research. He pinch hits in the ruck (or at least that is the plan Port have for him) and just by the look of him has a fairly athletic build, similar to Zac Clarke - could be a fairly decent pairing for the future when Zac takes over the #1 ruck mantle (which he should be striving for). Showed great potential throughout his colts days where he kicked a few massive bags which has continued in the SANFL in recent years. I have no doubts he would be on the radar of Freo recruiters.

I agree with this. They are both similar players and I don't think you could play both of them plus Taberner and Clarke in the same team. If you got Shaw it would only be in case Apeness didn't work out or wanted to be traded back to Vic.

Saying that I wouldn't be against getting Shaw to the club as depth and give him a chance, after all as previously stated I dont think he would cost us too much. I would like to see us go after Black and even Shane Kersten from Geelong, I think they add something different up forward that we don't currently have. Both pretty agile for there size with good grabs, kind of that position that Mayne plays at the moment but these two would add more goal scoring ability but less defensive pressure. It would be good to create a bit more competition for spots in the forward line.
