The best team in underaged football is back again in 2015, and they'll be looking to win another Championship to add to the trophy cabinet. And with 17 players from SA drafted across the two drafts last year, could another bumper year be on the cards? At the moment, it's not looking quite as good of a season for SA in terms of pure draft talent. But I imagine they'll again pick a side to win at the Championships, so there's no reason to think they wont do well again.

South Australia had 6 players chosen in the AFL/AIS program - Aaron Francis, Tim Sullivan, Ryan Burton, Luke Partington, Keiran Agius and Stephen Tahana. And it's safe to say they are the top 6 prospects from SA this year. As you'd expect so early in the year, the gap between them and the next group is pretty big. But that should shrink as the season progresses. The SA Academy itself can be found here.

My top 10 at this stage would look something like this...

1. Ryan Burton (190cm, 82kg from West Adelaide)
2. Aaron Francis (190cm, 88kg from West Adelaide)
3. Stephen Tahana (183cm, 79kg from North Adelaide)
4. Luke Partington (180cm, 75kg from Norwood)
5. Keiran Agius (187cm, 84kg from North Adelaide)
6. Tim Sullivan (198cm, 90kg from Glenelg)

Like I said, clear top 6. And versatility is the real highlight amongst these guys. We wont see a great deal of Burton until later in the year, as he recovers from a broken leg but he's a really talented forward that we saw in the Championships last year. He's your Gunston type forward, and if healthy will be the first South Australian taken. Francis and Agius are similar, in terms of both having played a lot as KPPs but just show something suggest to they could have an impact through the middle. Francis can play tall at either end, but moves incredibly well and I'm throwing him out as that Bontempelli type. And I'll be looking for similar progress through the year. Agius is along the lines of Stringer and Petracca, being that powerful medium forward who kicks a lot of goals. He has a bit to work on, but I imagine he'll play as a high half forward this year and should show something. I really like Tahana, I said last year he was the best defender I've seen come through the draft. He's just so composed, and now he'll be looking to move through the midfield too. Partington is the pick of the midfielders, gets a lot of production but at the moment I'd describe him more as neat than elite. I'll be watching how he compares to his peers this year. And finally, Sullivan will be our lead ruckman this year and also has the ability to play at either end.

7. Matthew Nunn (181cm, 76kg from Norwood)
8. Maris Olekalns (179cm, 70kg from North Adelaide)
9. Riley Bonner (189cm, 78kg from West Adelaide)
10. Wayne Milera (184cm, 74kg from Central Districts)

Rounding out the top 10 was much harder than it should have been, I could have plucked out a bunch of names. Nunn has the performances on the board, and will probably be part of the leadership group. While I've always liked Olekalns, will likely play through the midfield in the SANFL and across half back in the Championships. A little on the short side, but good pace and skills. Bonner and Milera are just guys who I'm hoping will develop nicely this year, Bonner has nice height and can play at either end. While Milera has flashed potential, and is in line for early senior action in the SANFL.

Other players who could at this stage push up would include Jordan Dawson, Cameron Hewett, Will Combe, Campbell Wildman, Kyle Presbury and most likely Will Snelling.

One thing that is lacking though, are key position players - at both ends of the ground, but particularly down back. Up forward, they could fashion a smaller attack with Burton, Agius and Dawson along with maybe Mackenzie Hansen. Otherwise, the most likely options would be Luke Surman (195cm, 95kg), Matthew Allen (194cm, 93kg) and Sam Gurney (196cm, 94kg). Down back, I don't think the selectors would have anyone pencilled in. The opening couple of months of the season will be very important, it wasn't until Keenan Ramsey was switched back late last year that they finally settled their line up after all. But if they were to play a game tomorrow, it would probably be Francis along with Kyle Broadwood (197cm, 85kg) and the underaged Sam Walker (186cm, 78kg). Of course the other option is to bring back an overaged player or two, something which SA always takes advantage of.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a McLean/Wilkie/Hayes type back this year. Not particularly worried about the lack of KPP from a performance perspective; we've shown we get it done even when undersized. Francis down back is fine leading that line and Allan forward is solid too. No doubt we'll have one of Parella/Sullivan resting forward too.

I'm a massive wrap on Francis too. Currently have him inside my top 10 prospects. Olekalns another I really, really like along with #myboy, Agius - who's currently in that zone where he could go either way - he could end up just another freakishly talented athlete with not much football nous (i.e. Tim Sumner/Brad Hartman kind of player) or he could push on and really, really excite and dominate. I feel right now he's closer to Sumner than Bennell but I'm hoping he gets there.

Also closely watching Willie Rioli Jr. this year as an overaged player. Has the talent, seemingly has the attitude - so it'll be nice to see how he goes in the league. A good season hopefully sees him drafted.

Agius seems like the player Geelong might take and try to release his potential.

Couple of weeks into the season, and how are some of the potential draftees going?

Week 1 of the Reserves (Reserves, not U18s) was all about North Adelaide. North should have a very good draft this year, but that's not to say they'll dominate the competition this year. Between the AFL Academy, the U18 Championships and the players being promoted to reserves and league football, I can't imagine the U18 side will see a lot of these boys this year. So, some stats and my top three for the week...

1. Maris Olekalns - 29 touches, 9 marks, 5 inside 50s, 1 goal
2. Keiran Agius - 17 touches, 6 marks, 3 inside 50s, 5 goals, 3 behinds
3. Cameron Hewett - 23 touches, 8 marks, inside 50s, 2 goals

Will Combe - 12 touches, 5 marks, 2 clearances, 2 goals
Stephen Tahana - 10 touches, 3 marks
Riley Bonner - 16 touches, 4 inside 50s
Brendan Dew - 16 touches, 3 marks, 5 clearances, 1 goal
Jonty Scharenberg* - 28 touches, 9 marks, 4 tackles, 5 clearances, 6 inside 50s

The Reserves in Round 2 were missing the Academy players, and just another three games were played. Some of the lesser known players stood up this week, and my top three are all players that should be kept an eye on this year. While the underage Scharenberg continued with his impressive form...

1. Kyle Presbury - 25 touches, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 8 clearances, 3 inside 50s
2. Matthew Nunn - 39 touches, 8 marks, 6 clearances, 3 rebound 50s, 2 goals
3. Jordan Dawson - 13 touches, 8 marks, 3 tackles, 3 goals, 4 behinds

Brendan Dew - 20 touches (16 handballs), 2 clearances
Based Baqeri - 9 touches, 6 tackles, 21 hitouts
Isaya McKenzie - 10 touches, 2 marks, 1 goal
Harry Cross - 21 touches, 6 marks, 2 clearances
Luke Surman - 8 touches, 2 marks, 32 hitouts
Jonty Scharenberg* - 27 touches, 4 tackles, 4 clearances, 1 goal

What's in store for this weekend? Well for starters, we've got some 18 year olds playing in their respective league sides. Which is always a promising sign early on in the season - Jordan Dawson (Sturt), Wayne Milera (Central), Matthew Nunn (Norwood), Will Snelling (West), Jack Agostino (West) and Hugh Haysman (West). We also have Erinn Wasley-Black making his debut for West Adelaide, so that's exciting for the former star underage prospect from the NT. I'll be keeping a close eye on him as a half back/wing this year.

Meanwhile, Aaron Francis was one of the AIS Academy's best players last week in their hitout. So expect to see him start climbing some early draft boards.

Thought I'd have a go at picking a 22 for South Australia at the U18 Championships. So much can and will change, as such I reserve the right to edit this secretly in the future...

b: Jack Agostino - Kyle Broadwood - Stephen Tahana
hb: Maris Olekalns - Aaron Francis - Riley Bonner
c: Wayne Milera - Brendan Dew - Kyle Presbury
hf: Keiran Agius - Ryan Burton - Jordan Dawson
f: Will Snelling - Luke Surman - Isaya McKenzie
r: Tim Sullivan - Luke Partington - Matthew Nunn
i: Cameron Hewett - Will Combe - Sam Walker - Jonty Scharenberg

The two spots really up for grabs over the next month are full back and full forward. In the end, I went with the extra size of Broadwood and the late emergence of Surman - who would also fill the role of second ruckman. They also seem to have a surprise or two when it comes time to name the squad though.

I'd be doubting that Burton comes good. Scharenberg is a seriously good player. Seriously good.

Think Haysman probably deserves a run, I'd also be playing Allen. Harrison Cross another who I'd be looking at. Slimming as an underager I really like as well, and reckon based on last week Ben Jarman could be a smoky such is the class he possesses. As for the second ruck - it's a tough one. Parella is raw but offers some real intensity and attack on the inside, but lacks the forward game. Surman isn't a bad shout but again, is he a full forward? Ditto Baqeri.

I'd be inclined to rotate Baqeri and Surman through, but I'd probably look into Baqeri first.

Another week of matches in the SANFL. The U18s opened their season, so a number of the draft prospects slid back into that competition while others started their 2015 campaigns. But we also had a number of guys going up a level into the league sides...

League
Wayne Milera - 10 touches, 2 tackles, 2 inside 50s
Matthew Nunn - 13 touches, 2 tackles, 3 inside 50s
Will Snelling - 18 touches, 5 marks, 9 tackles, 4 inside 50s, 1 goal
Jack Agostino - 7 touches, 4 marks
Hugh Haysman - 5 touches

Solid games by most of the 18 year olds with the senior bodies, but with Snelling obviously putting up the best numbers for West Adelaide. Good little forward, who excels in the pressure game. His game certainly didn't miss a beat.

Reserves
Harry Cross - 16 touches, 7 marks
Luke Surman - 11 touches, 3 marks, 24 hitouts
Kyle Presbury - 21 touches, 8 marks, 5 inside 50s
Isaya McKenzie - 13 touches, 3 marks, 1 goal
Based Baqeri - 14 touches, 4 tackles, 11 hitouts
Jordan Dawson - 11 touches, 7 marks, 5 goals, 3 behinds

Unfortunately, Dawson just missed the cut for Sturt's league side. But I can't imagine that will happen next week. Another standout game from the medium forward. And Presbury had another impressive game on a wing, I really like his start to the year. Baqeri was dominated in the ruck by the experienced Peter Nelson, but still he competed well for a young kid.

U18s
Matthew Allen - 28 touches, 13 marks, 7 inside 50s, 6 goals, 3 behinds
Mason Redman - 23 touches, 8 tackles, 6 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 1 goal, 2 behinds
Campbell Wildman - 16 touches, 4 marks, 6 tackles, 3 rebound 50s
Mackenzie Hansen - 12 touches, 2 marks, 5 inside 50s
Cody Szust - 25 touches, 11 marks, 3 tackles, 4 clearances
Ben Jarman* - 25 touches, 8 marks, 6 clearances, 3 tackles
Will Combe - 23 touches, 9 marks, 5 tackles, 7 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 1 goal
Cameron Hewett - 21 touches, 10 marks, 6 inside 50s, 1 goal
Riley Bonner - 17 touches, 7 marks, 3 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s, 1 goal
Jadyn Brind - 32 touches, 11 marks, 6 inside 50s, 2 goals, 3 behinds
Lachlan Smith - 28 touches, 3 tackles, 10 clearances
Andy Georgeson - 25 touches, 9 marks, 8 rebound 50s
Kyle Broadwood - 10 touches, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 3 rebound 50s

For now, I've included mainly just the Academy guys until some others start really stringing some performances together. Allen had a strong game up forward, continuing some of his form from last year. With Combe, Hewett and Bonner all dropping back a grade but playing well.

I'm not sure Jarman would be a real smokey, easily one of the best underaged prospects in SA. He, Scharenberg, Slimming and Walker are the four I'd have in the squad at the moment. But there are others pushing too - including LeBois as a specialist small forward.

Burton probably misses, just because he wouldn't have the games under his belt at the very least. In which case, Allen would be my inclusion at CHF - particularly if he continues his form from this weekend. I'm hoping he pushes up a grade fairly early on in the season, not that Glenelg is an easy team to push into. He'll rack up massive numbers in the U18s, but I'm not really sure what that does for his game. At the moment, he seems a bit better suited to playing higher up the ground as opposed to out the square. Ultimately I went with Surman just because I think he has the best chance of the second ruck options to become a key position player. He's really raw though, so a lot will depend on how he starts the year. Who knows what they do. But with the way they are performing at the moment, they'll get enough goals from Agius and Dawson alone - Dawson has been the real star so far for SA, he and Presbury have been my most impressive.

Can some one send this list to the lions. At least that we they will know who to stay away from.

Didn't actually see any of the games this weekend, so just some stats...

League
Matthew Nunn - 17 touches, 8 marks, 3 tackles
Wayne Milera - 6 touches, 8 tackles
Hugh Haysman - 21 touches, 5 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal
Will Snelling - 19 touches, 4 tackles, 6 clearances
Jack Agostino - 18 touches, 4 marks, 2 tackles

Reserves
Luke Surman - 14 touches, 3 marks, 11 hitouts, 1 goal
Harrison Cross - 22 touches, 8 marks, 3 rebound 50s
Jonty Scharenberg* - 34 touches, 7 marks, 4 tackles, 7 clearances, 1 goal, 3 behinds
Kyle Presbury - 20 touches, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 5 clearances
Brendan Dew - 18 touches, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 4 clearances
Isaya McKenzie - 10 touches, 5 tackles
Keiran Agius - 11 touches, 5 marks, 3 behinds
Maris Olekalns - 9 touches, 4 marks, 1 goal, 2 behinds
Jordan Dawson - 8 touches, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal, 2 behinds

U18s
Matthew Allen - 25 touches, 8 marks, 6 goals, 2 behinds
Mason Redman - 19 touches, 6 clearances
Jadyn Brind - 28 touches, 6 marks, 6 tackles, 10 clearances, 2 goals, 4 behinds
Riley Bonner - 14 touches, 5 marks, 5 tackles
Will Combe - 27 touches, 5 tackles, 13 clearances, 7 inside 50s
Cameron Hewett - 17 touches, 2 goals
Kyle Broadwood - 13 touches, 3 marks, 4 tackles,
Andy Georgeson - 17 touches, 5 marks, 4 rebound 50s
Based Baqeri - 12 touches, 15 hitouts, 1 goal
Harrison Gameau - 8 touches, 21 hitouts
Aaron Stewart - 15 touches, 6 marks, 3 clearances, 1 goal
Campbell Wildman - 38 touches, 11 marks, 5 clearances, 6 inside 50s
Harry van Adringhem - 22 touches, 4 marks, 4 clearances
Mackenzie Hansen - 13 touches, 5 goals
Jesse Moffa - 29 touches, 12 tackles, 6 clearances, 1 goal
Cody Szust - 28 touches, 4 marks, 8 tackles, 9 clearances

Some big games in the U18s this week, and from some of the smaller guys in Brind, Szust and Moffa. Brind is a very well developed young kid (178cm, 92kg) so it's no real surprise to see him dominating in close, little more polish in front of goals would make that stat line much more impressive. While Szust (174cm, 67kg) and Moffa (186cm, 76kg) are the only real hopes for South Adelaide's chances this year, so expect to see some more big numbers coming from those two. Wildman is the one I was most happy with when I read his stats, at 187cm and 80kg he's got the size that clubs are looking for and he has the workrate to match. So that's promising amongst all the smaller types.

Key position wise, still not a great deal to get excited by. Allen is the only 190cm+ to be kicking goals. It's looking a lot like SA will need to go with a group of medium forwards like Agius, Dawson and Hansen at the Championships. Nobody has really stepped up as the second ruckman behind Sullivan either, with the likes of Surman, Baqeri and now Gameau putting up similar numbers. While Broadwood is still who I'd be going with down back, unless Phillips can pull another Keenan Ramsey.

The best team in underaged football is back again in 2015

Seen a bit of South over the last few years as they're my supported club - Szust isn't an AFL prospect I don't think. Gets the ball cause there's nobody else to get it. Moffa I'm undecided on. I'd have thought he'd have been playing reserves this season after putting some reasonable numbers up in the ressies late last year. Moffa is 188-189 cm now. Biggest issue I've noticed with him is that he's got no positional versatility and his running patterns aren't great - he's very defensive/conservative minded; again, like Szust, wins the ball by sheer virtue of nobody else being there to get it. I think he could be a prospect purely as he did okay last year in reserves but I'm not sold; you don't have to be good to get the ball in that Souths u/18 side.

I do like what Baqeri offers, I'd be having him and Surman both in the 22 at the moment.

Would be really nice if Allen, Bonner, Combe and Hewett all started getting games in the ressies consistently now. Think it'd be best for their development & showing their skills.

Scharenberg is some player though. Him and Petrevski-Seton my top two for next year, right now.

I'm a big fan of players that rack up huge numbers consistently week after week. No matter the level you don't rack up 25+ touches without being able to gut run and run to the right places or knowing how to win some contests.

When I saw ollie rack up huge numbers in the champs I had him pegged for a star , never thinking he could land at port.

So far Schrenberg seems to be lighting it up in that regard. I'll be watching out for the kids who can do that this year.

Cam Hewett any relation? And Yep, agree with Skippos about Francis, will be a player with the right development, can't wait to see him at champs.
Cam Hewett is the younger brother of george who was drafted to the swans in 2013
