I think a large part of his contract is paid for in sponsorships though. Surely after Cox, Glass and Waters retirement we have some funds free.

This.

With Waters coming out this year, who wasn't a nominated veteran if I'm correct, you'd think that opens up at least 300k (I'm thinking that's light end for Waters). If we cull some more dead wood we should have some room. Not sure if we could afford Rance though.

Shiel looks like a great player but watching him again last night showed me something i already thought. His stats are padded. I'd love for someone to go through and count how many effective disposals of his were absolutely meaningless little 3 metre handfuls to a player before getting the ball back. Im pretty sure there was 1 stretch where he made a huge run and it was an amazing run where he had 5 possessions only to turn it over at the end of it. Of those 5 disposals as well only 2 were needed.

Feel he is overrated.

If Rance wanted to come to us for 200,000 a year richmond couldnt stop it because he is not a restricted free agent. Not saying we will get him this cheap but he wont cost the world if he wanted to play for the club his father was captain.

Just had an average game last night. He's usually a very damaging player.

I don't see salary cap as an issue at the Eagles. Just look at who we could delist this year and next. McGinnity, Tunbridge, Butler, Main, Wellingham will be taking a pay cut or be leaving, Hutchings, Hill and Karpany.

S Selwood may look to move as well or will stay for less because he's been injured for basically two years.

AND I forgot Waters.

I just hope we didn't go silly with Priddis after winning the Brownlow last year.

Again I will point out how often do quality free agents who will move west become available?

Be interesting re Rance. I know Murray quite well and he wasn't really chuffed that WC showed little interest (at the time) on recruiting his son. Not sure the link of "captains son" that you allude to is as strong as you think

Maybe not. However a move West is more likely than for say Dangerfield.

I understand that Rance spent time growing up outside WA but does have family here and that his wife also has family in Perth.

He could end up at Freo.

They could both end up as missionaries in South America!

I find that I have to remind myself that Murray Rance was ever an Eagles player, then I remember that he was actually captain for a season. My over riding recollection of him is a swans player and a John Todd protege who was only an Eagles captain because of Todd. Also thought he was over rated

Heh... I totally forgot about FA compo. Screw it, let Selwood go. We'll probably get a second rounder; although he'd probably be in the top ten money earners at the club.

McGinnity and Butler (how the hell has McGinnity been on an AFL list this long?!) are also unrestricted. Both are surplus, although Butler would be handy on the list as a 3rd or 4th-string HB. I wouldn't put him in the 22 over someone like Lamb or Sheppard though. Especially considering Wellingham seems to be playing quite well down back.

In front of Masten

On a slightly different but related topic Bond. Colledge, what are your thoughts?

He has been stringing together some decent numbers in the WAFL and attracting the interest of taggers.

Named an emergency but not getting a game.

WALF watchers on here report he lacks a bit of pace but at 193cm I would have though he would have got a game across half forward with Darling out of the side.

Our forward line is already functioning quite well with Kennedy, Hill, LeCras, Cripps & resting ruck (plus McInness of late).

Hard to fit another peg in there really, would just get in the way.

Will be interesting to see how we ease Darling back into the fold.

I'd love for a journalist to ask Simpson exactly what he wants Colledge to be doing that he's currently not. That type on insight in to a club is so much more interesting than 99% of the questions asked.

It would be really interesting to see if he's not as getting as much inside ball as Simpson would like, if he's not disposing of the ball well enough, not enough tackles, goals etc

McInness would make way for Darling you would think. Hill maybe if they wanted to keep the extra tall, but Hill has been in good form lately.

I like Colledge but he does have limitations and I think Simpson is acutely aware that WC need better spread from stoppages and that Colledge wont assist with that. Was surprised he didn't get a gig against Freo but don't think GWS was his cup of tea.

As someone pointed out - he's not a HFFer

This would still be included in the team's salary cap.
Nah probably about $600000 in our cap the other $300000 is outside the cap for his multicultural ambassador role .
I think we would have a good amount of cap space but I wouldn't want to spend $800000 a year on rance . Better to spend 1 million a year for 2 young mids

I think that is selling (Romance as be was called ) a bit short Keyser as he was quite a handy player both for us and the Doggies.
Was a pretty good lock down CHB and read the play well.
His leadership skill were already evident at the Doggies before he came home.
I am not saying he was a champion , and yes the Todd / Swan Districts connection didn't hurt , but Murray was a leader who got the gig on merit .

It looks like he doesn't really fit in any position. Too slow for outside mid and not contested enough for inside. Makes you wonder why the club gave him a contract extension.

Wasn't that impressed by Coniglio no way should we give a 1st Rd pick for him .
Coniglio like GWS played their worst game of the year . Ward , griffen , Traloar all played average and sheil despite 36 touches wasn't very effective .
Coniglio is a young quality mid who can play in and out and is very quick on the spread .
Exactly the type we need .
Agreed I would not want to use out first just so we can hopefully pick Callum Ah Chee also

Well its pretty obvious that he's taken his game to the next level this year. I think the extension was warranted.

Hill hasn't really been playing like a tall though this year - which is why he has probably found a role.

I'm forgetting one of his goals, but three at least were from ground balls.

With kennedy, darling and resting ruck - we don't need more marking talls.

Ideally we have someone more like Cripps who I notice is getting some centre square time as well.

So whilst hill is crumbing and applying defensive pressure - i see a role.
