Thinking about this Harley trade more closely, it's really not that great. Better than a third rounder, but we really did get bent over.

Fremantle give up pick 16 (1,067 points) and pick 35 (522 points). This brings the points to 1589 points.

Freo then gained pick 22 (845 points) and Harley. The difference in points is 744 points for the Suns. Which is in between picks 25-26.

Basically, we traded Harley for pick 25/26.

We are lucky to get anything for him, we handled this situation so ****ing badly that we turned a gold nugget in to a turd.

Harley is trouble and now he is Freo's trouble, time to move on.

Club (and Gaz, to be blunt) partly at fault for allowing a rubbish culture to develop.
But pretty sure the majority of the blame has to go to Harley.
It was not one problem it was a multitude.
Once the last incident hit the public we were over the barrel.
Clubs backed away b/c of how he behaved not b/c the club came out and said we were going to trade him.
We were dudded at that point. He stays clean after the season and we might well have traded him for more value, or even kept him if he had stayed true to his word.

I think back to what was on this board at different times this year as his problems kept coming to light. A great player on-field but he was costing us off it.

If we get a big jump in professionalism, buying in, effort and commitment from the 35 or so guys left on the list from this year, some of that will come home to Harley leaving.
And the good culture will rub off on the 3 or so highly drafted youngsters.

It is what it is. Off-field problems suck but they happen in all sports and the club with the talented player always, always, always gets dudded.

16-22 is effectively useless. We've given up one of our best players for pick 35... Let that sink in.

The only, ONLY thing that saves me from a meltdown is that SURELY there must be more to this. We must be certain that he's not going to make it. Maybe he's on a couple of strikes etc. Who knows, but I can't believe that we'd ship him out for peanuts.
Maybe it is because Jaeger and Dion wanted him out. If so, they better bloody stay.

Finding it hard to take anything out of this at all.

Now that he's gone I'm prepared to say that as good a player as he is we would never win anything if we have to count on him to change his ways.

He's a loose cannon that couldn't be brought to heel - he pissed off the administration, he embarrassed the club on the national stage, he lied to the club about changing his ways, rumors are that he's pissed off some team mates and their partners (don't know any details RE this).

If he was a half decent bloke and a professional we wouldn't have been left with what we got, as he is a high risk proposition.

As great as it was to see Harley play footy it will be 100 times better to see us a strong, successful and unified club winning games of football.

Add Guy McKenna to that list he let these young guys get away with murder in the early years. Destroying so many young players careers

I always try and look positively on things to make the best of situations.

We've lost Bennell, Smith, and Dixon, yes, but it's not all doom and gloom.

Dixon is a great kick and is a hulking behemoth and he'll be sorely missed, BUT he struggles with injury and is inconsistent. While he's a massive get for Port Adelaide, he's not an overly huge loss for us. He's not worth the money he's demanding, and he struggles to stay on the park with an ankle that's plagued him for his entire career thus far. He's a Queensland boy and he's a much loved figure at the Suns, but he's replaceable.

Bennell is classy as they come, racks up 30+ touches regularly, and has a pretty amazing highlight reel, but he's a trouble maker pure and simple. He has been a pain the entire time he's been at the club and he's been given chance after chance. For lack of a better description, he's a 'soft' player. He doesn't get involved in contests, he doesn't tackle, and he doesn't play inside the maul. He relies purely on others to pass the ball to him in order to rack up the possessions. He's got the goods, but lacks the discipline. Ross Lyon is probably the best coach for him at the moment, but he's proven time after time that he's incapable of controlling his attitude. For a fairly one-dimensional player, albeit a very good one, he's replaceable.

Smith is a good ruckman but lacks motivation. No big loss. Replaceable.

Look on the bright side - we've cut out the cancer of poor culture by moving on Dixon and Bennell. Time to focus on the future without these distractions.

Should we have a look at Matt Rosa from West Coast he seems to have requested a trade he's 28 and played 168 games so would add some experience to the squad and have a good couple of years left in him.

Beat me to it.. Right in the experienced age bracket that we are after

They also can't corrupt Jack Martin anymore. We know Charlie and Jack were both in that room drinking and Harley was his housemate. The Suns should be commended for their hard stance on unacceptable behaviour. They weren't weak and just held on to them in the hope they might change. They've traded them the first chance they got.

It's so important to have a strong culture when you have this many young players all at the same club. Players like Tom Lynch are going to push this club in the right direction.

I find it hard to believe that Seedsman would do a tour of the club and then go to North Melbourne or Adelaide.
Don't be so sure. This is Harley Bennell two weeks ago leaving Punt Rd after touring their club with Mark Williams (seen in the front seat).

Fair point but i think in the end Bennell wanted to go home. That's not an issue with Seedsman as he's just looking for more game time. Surely he would play more at GC than at North Melbourne. Same with Howe.

Yeah but from Seedsman's/Howe's perspective, you have to believe North Melbourne is closer to a flag than Gold Coast. Playing finals may be a big factor for Howe given Melbourne have never competed in September while he's been there. In saying that, he may look at Bennell and Dixon leaving the club and realise there is a spot there for a mid-sized forward/third tall forward if he wants it. I think it's fair to say the Gold Coast offer would involve more money so that may also be a factor.

With all these picks coming in it's hard to see how the club wouldn't acquire both Howe and Seedsman, should they want to join the Suns. Just a quick thought here - both Tom Lynch and Peter Wright are off contract in 12 months time. The club better sign up both ASAP!
