This round should put round 1's results into a bit of context. A few interesting questions to be answered. Tips are as follows

Old Geelong v SMS 1 point
Old Parade V PEGS 25 points
Ivanhoe v OM 10 points
NOBS V Prahran Assumption 80 points
Whitefriars V Therry 55 points

A brutal early final quarter blast from Therry spoilt an otherwise very even and competitive match at Friar Park.

Jarrod Bannister continues to enjoy kicking goals against us, and Jarrod Egglestone proves to be a handful when his game is "on". Seems that this years' standard has lifted a notch from 2015, and we will need to lift our own game to start notching up wins before the season starts to derail!

How tough is it lining up the form?

Therry>Old Geelong>St Marys>Whitefriars, yet Therry only narrowly beat Whitefriars while St Mary's smashed them then lose to OGs.

Then
Old Mentone>Ivanhoe>PEGS>Parade who drew with Prahran > NOBS.

My summation? St Mary's might just be flattrack bullies. Whitefriars play better at home. Mentonians the side to beat.

My form ladder:

Old Mentone (standout)
Therry (they find a way to win)
Old Geelong (definite Top 4 side)
Ivanhoe (unsure)
PEGS (unsure)
St Mary's (bullies?)
Whitefriars (unsure, better at home)
Parade (unsure)
Prahran (unsure)
NOBS (not up to it)

With Therry and Whitefriars only separated by nine points on Saturday, looks a really even comp from (my) second to ninth.

Smashed is giving SMS a bit too much credit. We battled through that game and only kicked away in the last when the game was over. We are also a much better side at home.

As for being flattrack bullies, its hard to argue against. Its been a common theme for us for about 3 years now. In D2 a couple of years back I think we had a percentage of 200% or thereabouts, yet lost a fair few games against the premiership contenders. Against OGGS we were really disappointed with our performance though. Providing we don't slip up, I still think we will finish 3-4th this year.

Ivanhoe have lost players apparently and i cant see them making finals. With their list of last year they could have been a massive chance to contend but not so much now this season. Mail i've heard suggests a lot of players are travelling overseas

Parade will be in the unfortunate position of not being good enough to make finals, but not being bad enough to be relegated IMO

SMS should make finals, however they do have a tendency as folding to good teams

I think Therry however is the team to beat. Solid looking team and they just get the job done

Still early days, traditionally after round 4, the top 4-5 doesn't change a lot, we will know a lot more then. Still think old Geelong Therry PEGS St Mary's and Mentone will be the top 5. Whitefriars will also be there abouts and could make the 4. PEGS beat Therry and Willy who are third in C in practice games. Therry and PEGS 1-1 last year in home and away. Can't read a lot into pre season form and teams change from year to year, however not sure there is a lot between PEGS and Therry. PEGS were horrific round 1, probably the worst they have played and were bitterly disappointed from the performance but hit back well last week. I haven't seen old Geelong but they almost knocked Therry who are hard to beat at home, then appear to have comfortably beat St Mary's last week. Old Mentone beat Ivanhoe by 120, and PEGS lost to Ivanhoe. On that form I would suggest Mentone would have to be the early team to beat. Depth also important, so ressies and U 19 player strength will be important in the second half of the year. Mentone have to be the clear early team to look out for.

How good would PEGS actually be if they didn't have a handful of good players content with just playing reserves...

This may have been the case in previous years but I don't think that's the case anymore mate. They have a lot of players who are very good at reserves level but very few push up and hold their own consistently at senior level.
They won the Premier C Reserves flag last year so one can only imagine the havoc they will reap in the ressies this year.

Agree with above. The best players have played seniors the past two years. They have a core group of young players 20-25 that have struggled to take the next step at senior level but are very very good at reserve level. See post above. There is an even spread of solid reserve players in the team 22 of them, but just aren't quite good enough at the next level. The club in previous years has probably not attracted the core first 18 school team to the club, we get a good nucleus of the second and third 18 players from the school. This year there is a mix of quality first 18 school kids playing in the unders that should push up for senior selection. well.

Just to confirm:

Yes, we have lost a few overseas this year, interstate for work and a big list of retired players (mainly from the from the twos Flag team). That said, we have some handy inclusions and if we can get them all on the park that would be helpful - a touch unlucky with injuries, but that's footy.

That said, and I know it is VERY early days, I watched a VERY good side on Saturday who I feel will go VERY deep into the finals activity this year. They showed us how to play the game. We got smashed, big time. They were more committed to run both ways, used the ball better, deadly (early) on in front of goal and had great contribution across all parts of the ground. We (Ivanhoe) were bloody awful, but sometimes that has alot to do with your opposition. Hats off to Old Mentonians, they were a class above us last week.

We have OGGS, Therry and St Marys in the next three weeks - so it looks like a pretty tough fixture for our first 5 games up a grade (PEGS and OM included) looking at early results from other games.

Chump.

thanks for the clear up chump
classy as always

Ivanhoe were too good for an OGGS side that never got going yesterday. Expecting the Hoes to figure at the business end with that performance.

Therry will be doing a few rain-dances to get their home-ground to turn into a pigsty as soon as possible. Watched them yesterday against SMS and they play a brutal style of football on the opposition. At every opportunity they ensure they lay their opponent into the ground - led by the skipper Egglestone. They moved the ball exceptionally well in the first quarter, but squandered a few early opportunities that should of seen them further ahead. However, their game style is incredibly taxing on themselves and it is hard to maintain the tempo and aggression when the opposition starts hitting the scoreboard, evident with SMS 8 goals to 2 display in the third. Ultimately, their contested football game style works incredibly well at home, especially when it turns to slops and has been shown as a successful formula in finals. Best method against is spread and outrun. Ivanhoe against them should be an absolute ripper and give some indication of where Therry should end up. In terms of D1 seasons it should be one of the tightest for recent memories.

Maybe the tightest from 2nd down judging by the demolition jobs being handed by the ladder leaders
Parade looking like they will be battling relegation all season

We played some better footy yesterday and had a few back in the side. In saying that OGGS had several players missing (wedding of something like that) so I would imagine they will improve considerably next outing.

Very happy to secure another 4 points and have a big game next week against a team that has had the wood over us in recent years when we have played. I would be happy to see the Bannisters out or another week :)

As for OM's - they gave us a hiding last week - no excuses, just looked a very, very good team to me.
