Brian, whilst I mostly agree with you, you are wrong about not giving a stuff about sport. All APS schools do. It a very important part of the student carriculam and all schools strive for success.

They don't give a stuff about sport..

All of the Xavier and De La old boys send their kids to the school now..

Both of these statements are simply wrong, you're talking rubbish.

My comments refer to handing out scholarships, which just don't happen at a Catholic private school like SKC and Xavier.

This statement ranks in absurdity with ‘Bob Downs’ comment that Uni Blues are a 6 goal worse side than last year.

St Kevins does, it, Xavier does it. Haileybury does it, Brighton Grammar does it..... they all do it and so what if they do?

If a talented young sportsman (or academic for that matter) can get a quality education at a top school then surely that’s a good thing. It helps the school sell their “brand” by promoting sporting excellence and academic achievement. Just don’t understand why some people are in denial about this.

Whether it translates to success at senior level in the VAFA is irrelevant. Can Kew, who are located in the epicentre of private schools in this state, keep climbing the ranks and get back to the heady days of the 80s?. Would be great if they could.

What, recruit people who want to play with their mates for NOTHING? Points in an association where no one gets paid? How would that work?
Not allow good people at our club who are looking for graduates to employ them instead of someone they don't know from SEEK?

The answer Bedford is clubs need to get better, and SKOB has had 10 years building to get to this point. We have had shitty facilities we have played at, players who have captained Old Xavs to premierships, played in flags at St Bernard's and been All Australians at De La.

Why? Because we were in the lower grades and of the VAFA. We now have 6 teams that played on the weekend, a great facility in Glen Iris, a school that has no less than 22 football teams playing each weekend in the senior school alone.

Next year we will get half of the 15 blokes playing VFL this year back, under your 'points' system you would be denying them the opportunity to play with their mates.

Will never happen.

and still be in B Grade

Ignorant comment, SKC do not give out scholarships for footy, if they did they wouldn't lose a game. They don't give a stuff about sport, it's all about academia. Success breeds success, that's why all of the Bulldogs players and Xavier and De La old boys send their kids to the school now, if they were giving out footy scholarships the Old Boys wouldn't see those kids anyway, they'd be at VFL or AFL level.

As far as St Mary's go, they thrive on the kids from St Kevins who don't want to play Premier B, they are very happy taking the boys and giving them a game.
The way you are talking about St Kevins makes it sounds like they haven't LOST a final in the past decade in Premier B! I have no doubts that St Kevins school system has improved drastically since the late 90s but it is pretty evident they have yet to even brush the surface as an elite private school. APS premierships are one thing (and you are dreaming if you think they don't hand out sporting scholarships... All APS schools do, some just are more subtle about it - i.e Xavier and St Kevins) but developing an elite reputation does not simply happen overnight.

And you are talking about Bulldogs players as well mate. When was the last time the Bulldogs won a premiership?? You're deluded if you think that a couple of good years of footy and a couple of father-son selections makes your school the school to attend. It just doesn't work like that. That's like saying people are going to buy a Medallion Club membership over the Melbourne Cricket Club membership. Ludicrous presumptions.

Anyway, school debates are ridiculous. We are talking about the Old Boy v District Club debates. I am a big believer in club culture but let's face it, boys straight out of a school that is proud of their old boy culture that there is only one choice. It is smart marketing and keeps clubs like the Old Xavs, Old Scotch, Old Trinity et al strong. But in the end, most kids who are not in the sub-elite (and even some who are) just want to play with their mates. That's part of the reason Kew have become such a strong club internally since the dark days of yesteryear. Same as St Mary's. You get a bunch of reasonably talented footballers and they will start to bring their mates, be they average Joe's or your VAFA Premier A playing Joe's.

The problem with this has been spoken about previously in this thread. Junior systems create hugely successful clubs, loyalty creates good, humble clubs. It takes more than loyalty and passion to create successful clubs. It takes money, investment and a feeder system. District clubs are unfortunately heavily stigmatised by this and a good period of footy can all come unstuck when a few blokes leave for money, overseas travel or just general fatigue. This is the problem that St Mary's, Kew, Bulleen Templestowe et al face in the long run. I for one, am particularly proud to be involved with a district club with such a rich history but the constant worry that comes over the boys down at the club every preseason despite our recent storied success can be taxing. I have played for the Old Xavs at an Under 19s level and enjoyed myself, but I could never see myself returning to the club despite my pride in being an Old Boy.

I would love to be able to convince kids that there is more to footy than playing for a name, it is about the amazing passion and pride you get out of playing for a club you help keep alive. However, I know that the system is skewed, and that's just the way it is. District Clubs are special places and there are many people out there who will not stand for the ignorance in comments that talk about how it is an even playing field. It is not, it never will be again. However, if it is up to me and a lot of other proud FOOTBALL supporters (not mere talking hats who keep their minds closed and only one eye open), we will never let them die.

Old Mentone to beat Ogs by 5 goals
Ormond to beat YV by 10 goals
Nobs to put St Marys in their place
BT to clock up one of their few victories for the season over Whitefriars
Kew to beat Prahran and put them in a difficult position of 0-2

Old Geelong v Old Mentonians
Ormond v
Yarra Valley
St Mary's v
NOBS/St Pats
Bulleen Templestowe v
Whitefriars
Kew v
Prahran

Oh look. It's all the home teams. Not quite. Old Geelong will be stinging from last week. Should harden up this week. Yarra Valley do NOT travel well. St MAry's are up and about. Bullants are hard to kill. Kew, going on with the game. They tend to get a bit cocky. But not just yet. o_O

Old Geelong to bounce back at home against Old Mentonians.

Yarra Valley in a surprise win against Ormond. Their preseason form suggests they are a LOT better than last week.

Bulleen Temp to do it easily against the young Friars

Kew v Prahran: Draw. Match of the round at Vic Park

St Mary's Salesian v NOBS/StPats don't rate a mention?

Almost everyone tipped against us today, but to be frank, Bulleen Temp looked old and slow in the second half. As the only team to win on the road, we will enjoy this one. Didn't see much in the early game to give BT much hope.

Will enjoy the weekend and look forward to round 3.

Congrats on the win.....I suspect BT are going to struggle against all comers.

I think BT are monties for relegation. Not good news for Ugly Derm as he seems like a good bloke.

Certainly rates a mention now, I saw SMS demolish NOBS/StPats today and it looks like the young Saints will be serious contenders in D1. They made NOBS look pretty ordinary and I don't think they are.

Very nice start from the Monds , early favs although yes Bedford very early..I hear a few to come back as well....

I wasnt sure what to make of SMS this year with all the players they had lost, but what i saw on saturday i dont think it has effected them at all.
They lost their captain just before quarter time then their ruckman just before half time. So to finish the game the way they did was a huge result. im not sure if NOBs were missing any players? either way SMS might be the real deal this year?

Scintillating start to the season from both the promoted sides, who have both notched solid wins over Old Geelong (Kew) and NOBS (St Marys). These two sides were far and away better than their opponents last season, and given the youth both sides have it seems as if they have continued to improve over the summer. Given the results so far, wouldnt be too farfetched to say these two sides may again be fighting it out for silverware this season.
