Just beaten by a more complete side. Look at their list and there is so much depth. Anyone can come on and have an impact.

That is abusing I would've thought. They have been terrible this game for sure. But shit happens, they have been beaten by a far better side on the day. Not going to start calling them every name under the sun because of it.

It's a popular trend. Why do we have swimmers, hockey players, a particular tennis player, a women's and men's basketball team who all stumble in the big moments?

The American swimmers are right on. We genuinely need to take a hard line look at how we approach sports psychology. While aimed towards the Australian swimming team I believe that it applies across the board. We are mentally fragile when it comes to the big games.

Our physical preparation programs are world class but mental approach appears to be lacking.

We have a men's basketball team who gets rattled if we don't get off to the start that we would like. The result of this game was obvious several minutes into the game.

Pretty disappointing, not the result itself but the fact that this USA side is one of the more beatable USA sides that has participated at the Olympics and Australia don't get the knockout game to show that they are good enough to beat them and win it. That, together with having beaten Serbia in the tournament already makes it disappointing.

So does every country. We also have sportsmen who perform brilliantly on the big stage.

No choking. Just outclassed by a better basketball team and nation. Let's get serious. Australia have done well this tournament, take nothing away from them.

One of the big differences is that the Euro teams regularly play a lot more competitive tournaments than the Boomers do. The play Eurobasket every two years. They get to build experience playing as a team under pressure. How many times have we had our first team together playing in big tournaments?

Once every two years (World Champs and Olympics) and then we have matches against comparative minnows. In reality it's less than half as often.

In reality the question then becomes how we can change that? It's hard (almost impossible) to get our NBA players out for anything less than the major tournaments.

disagree. teams make adjustments as the tournament progresses. the stronger will survive. australia have been talking about stepping up in the knockouts. we played to a level against lithuania. we had a scoreboard flattering win over Serbia last time in the last 5 mins . Serbia deserved another shot at us and are deserving. have to play at a great level to beat spain. not over

We had absolutely zero, i repeat , zero benefit for being a superior team to Serbia in the group stage.

If that is the case , why the **** do we have a group stage then ? What's the point? Most of the group stage is teams just trying to manipulate a way to dodge the USA until the gold medal game.

Its just disappointing that time and again teams can come into the olympics and bumble through most of it and nail 2 games and medal. What's the point of killing the group stage? Not enough reward for being consistant throughout the tournament. Needs to be re jiggled imo.
Nah that's tournament ball IMO. It's what makes it such an achievement to win

In the case of Spain i get you.

Might be a case for 4 groups rather than 2?

I'd like to see a tournament where only the top two teams from each group advance. No quarterfinals. Just the group stage followed by the semis involving the top four teams in the tournament followed by the championship and third placed finals. They'd never do it.

I'd actually just drop quarters and only two out of each group, treats every game as a must win then but still a chance to drop one and make it.

At least in most other competitions that might feature a round robin before knock outs the round robin will offer something like a double chance or home ground advantage. Without either of those on offer at olympics what is the point?
