Wow some amazing vitriol in this thread. Yeah was a shocking game but lets not throw the baby out with the bath water - we're ranked 11 in the world, if someone told you 2 weeks ago they'd be playing off for bronze you'd take it in a heartbeat

therein lies the problem. the media pump us up, we get seduced and mesmerised and barrack for the team moreso than usual. even gaze said pre tournament if we play our best we can medal. so, if experts say shit like that (however biased), its natural people will follow. then the crash happens.

playing for 3rd and 4th, yes take that at the moment. however, with all the aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi stuff our sense have absorbed over the past fortnight it was inevitable our fervor reached orgasmic levels.

so yes we're ranked 11th. but pre tournament, some posters here and on other sides predicted we'd go out in pool OR first knockout stage. such posters were lambasted.

so we cant have it both ways

Got exposed by physical, well-drilled and just flat out better team who had done their homework on us. What did we lose by, 30 odd with Serbia coasting in the last q? Even if we hit the open looks we should have we still get done pretty comfortably imo. Disappointing that they didn't hit those open shots of course but thats their first bad game for the tournament, shame it happened in the semis. Lack of execution on offense had a lot to do with Serbia's D, credit where its due.

serbia outplayed us. did their home work and took away our strength.
knew their bigs would cause us problems

Why don't we bring back the bloke in the top right of this picture? He looks like he can play...

In all seriousness, I think this Olympic campaign will go down as the 'what if Ben Simmons played for the Australian national basketball team in 2016' campaign when we look back on it. Bogut will most likely be retired by the time Tokyo rolls around and Simmons would have slotted in nicely for Joe Ingles but, alas, we'll never know what could have happened if we were full strength.

You live by the three and you die by the three 4-31. Even if we went 10-31, which is still a little below average then it is a game.

Not getting all the calls for Simmons to play, Philly were never really going to give the ok to play him at the olympics when he has 82 games to get through. I'm sure he'll be at the next games

Throughout the games we were hunting trying to kill every team.
Today we played like we were hunted for the first time and had no execution to combat it.

Choking is a harsh tag for these guys considering how much they've played out of their abilities. Today the Boomers were just humbled by a better and experienced team that knows how to play big games.

The reason that Simmons should have played are numerous in my eyes, but if I could just make one major point it would be how often do you get the CHANCE to play for your country at the olympics and win a gold medal.

I understand that basketball is different to football/soccer by custom but why can't that be changed? Make a stand and play for your country.

I know I already made this point before Australia was knocked out of the gold medal race and I was lambasted then and expect the same now. For me it just does not make sense to choose not to play for your country especially when you could possibly make a difference between bronze silver or gold. All I have been hearing is that Australia lacks star power and if the no. 1 draft player plays in your side that would help surely.

Just my 2 cents.

You can't blame Simmons for not playing, he has just been taken at 1 and was obligated to play the summer league, he also saw what happened to Exum only 12 months earlier. I don't think things are great with Simmons and Lemanis either.....

This result will hopefully light the fire in Simmons, Exum and Maker to take the team to another level over the next 4 years.

I honestly don't think that Simmons would have made a huge difference in this Olympics anyway. His game style necessitates that he has the ball in his hands a lot and that would require a complete reworking of our gam eplan. Give us four years to design a game plan around his strengths and we will be in a much better position.

Th worst bit was that we didn't seem to play to our strengths offensively... Imo delly plays his best in pick and roll, bogut and baynes suit this style, with ingles and mills benefitting from adjusting defences. Not our greatest moment, but let's get that bronze!!

I've been posting in the olympics forum, you mean there's been 2 threads I can post my disappointment.

It was a choke...but an unsurprising one. We have some very good defensive guys but lack genuine offense outside of a set play, noone can create their own shot. Serbs disrupted our offensive sets and it was game over, on top of our poor shooting it was a blowout.

There is no way Spain sit back on D after seeing that so unless we hit shots we are cooked.

I think there has been 3 or 4 threads, I've lost track.

That's the problem. Going all out never works unless you're the US. Serbia was giving more game-time to their inexperienced players during the most crucial parts of the group games - it builds good squad depth - any given player can come in and play their role well. Australia really just relied on Mills, Bogut and Delly to do the hard-lifting majority of the time.

There's your difference.
Mills Bogut and Delly didn't play big minutes in the games we won easily. Bogut and mills both sat out games in their entirety as well.
