Wow some amazing vitriol in this thread. Yeah was a shocking game but lets not throw the baby out with the bath water - we're ranked 11 in the world, if someone told you 2 weeks ago they'd be playing off for bronze you'd take it in a heartbeat
therein lies the problem. the media pump us up, we get seduced and mesmerised and barrack for the team moreso than usual. even gaze said pre tournament if we play our best we can medal. so, if experts say shit like that (however biased), its natural people will follow. then the crash happens.
playing for 3rd and 4th, yes take that at the moment. however, with all the aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi stuff our sense have absorbed over the past fortnight it was inevitable our fervor reached orgasmic levels.
so yes we're ranked 11th. but pre tournament, some posters here and on other sides predicted we'd go out in pool OR first knockout stage. such posters were lambasted.
so we cant have it both ways
Got exposed by physical, well-drilled and just flat out better team who had done their homework on us. What did we lose by, 30 odd with Serbia coasting in the last q? Even if we hit the open looks we should have we still get done pretty comfortably imo. Disappointing that they didn't hit those open shots of course but thats their first bad game for the tournament, shame it happened in the semis. Lack of execution on offense had a lot to do with Serbia's D, credit where its due.
serbia outplayed us. did their home work and took away our strength.
knew their bigs would cause us problems
Why don't we bring back the bloke in the top right of this picture? He looks like he can play...
In all seriousness, I think this Olympic campaign will go down as the 'what if Ben Simmons played for the Australian national basketball team in 2016' campaign when we look back on it. Bogut will most likely be retired by the time Tokyo rolls around and Simmons would have slotted in nicely for Joe Ingles but, alas, we'll never know what could have happened if we were full strength.
