Agree. Bogut is a borderline All Star though if healthy (especially before his injuries), Baynes is a backup at NBA level, and definitely not someone you want starting for even limited games. We definitely need a replacement for Bogut long term, he isn't the answer, but maybe Thon could be against teams without a big center. Force the center to follow him to the 3 point line (Thon has FIBA 3 range), will open up the court a lot, if he doesn't get pounded on the other end.

Not sure who's bagging out Bogut, but that's silly, he was lucky to play at all.
Yeah I see where you're coming from & agree too. I'd be bloody worried if Thon was our C though. Rake of a man atm.

Thought Baynes was mostly okay but he seemed to be a bit out of shape. Saw him a few times with hands on knees, gasping for breath after only a couple of runs up and down the court.

Given Simmons ability as a rebounder he can help out a lot though, could get away with it a bit. Also need a C that can stretch the floor if playing Simmons because his current lack of shooting means it gets very cramped if have two non-shooting bigs there. Clear out the opposing big defender though and Simmons should be able to get to the rim at will and if defences collapse on him hit the shooters in Mills, Delly, Exum/Ingles, and Thon. Would be nice.

Defence is the issue though with Thon at C.

posters on this board know baynes and his limitations. the general population don't and that's cool. but he's a back up who provides D and fouls in the NBA. he roles it well.

internationally, he's one of our NBA players which teh general pop believe ZOMG HE"S A GUN!. But like bogut they are good at what they do. They are not scorers, for some reason some posters think cause he's a no 1 pick he should be scoring.

Bogut says he is keen for 2020. Will gis body hold up that long?

PG Exum/Delly
SG Mills
SF Simmons/Ingles
PF Baynes
C Maker/Bogut
Not bad NBA talent and experience.

Also a good article here on who may fill up the remaining spots. Some good young talent.

Or maybe:

1.Delly/Mills (depending on how Mills age's)
2.Exum
3.Simmons
4.Thon
5.Bogut

Or maybe go for a stretching small(ish) ball lineup with Thon at the 5 and Simmons at the 4?

Agree.

But I'd be very surprised if Simmons isn't a reliable knock down shooter by the time Tokyo comes around. Philly just hired a new shooting coach and they will make sure he absolutely devotes himself to his shot.

With all the extra time he has to work on his shot going from a part time College environment to a full time NBA environment, I think it might come along quicker than some people expect.

Not sure if directed at me or not mate but I reckon Baynes output offensively & on D wasn't up to his usual standard. I've seen him play better & think the pressure just got to him. He needed to be more agressive on the boards IMO & create a bit more presence inside. He did it against serbia in parts but not consistent throughout the tournament. He'll be better for the run & reckon he's awesome when playing his normal game though. He just seemed down at Rio IMO.

If Bogut plays on & isthere in 2020 then it will be a very limited role & we'll need someone (Baynes) to step up and be that presence in the paint.

Also, no love for Motum on here? I thought he showed a fair bit last night?
Really liked his game, and hopefully gets a look in, but with Maker, Simmonds, Froling, Bolden, Adel etc Possibly to come in he may not make the cut next olympics. Should still be there for the commonwealth games I think.
Wouldn't be suprised to see some NBA interest for him though after his last two games off the bench.

Not for nothing, but Baynes never secured that rebound on the Mills foul, and was last to touch it. So we'd still be looking at a final Spain possession, down 1 but semantics I guess.

2020 should be pretty hot, as it was always intended. End of the day, only the one real disappointing, and out of character performance, which happened to be the most important game of the lot but that's how it goes sometimes.

Looking at our competitors next time around:

Argentina's golden age is about done. Spain will more or less be the same but with Marc at the helm.

France is about to get an injection of some serious young talent - Frank Ntilikina is legit.

Croatia will only get better. Likewise Serbia with Jokic and like the talent coming out of some of the other Slavic states, and Turkey.

So essentially, whilst we'll field our best ever team, it's far from a certain medal. International ball is only getting better, and you'd expect US to adjust for any increase in competition with a stronger team.

FIBA World Cup in 2019 has too many teams, but should be hella interesting.

wasnt directed at you.

Simmons isn't a three. He's a PF.

Lineup expect to see is
Delly
Mills
Exum
Simmons
Bogut

i dont feel exum is a 3 also.

At 6-5 he can play the 3 against a lot of teams. But it is a bit of a round peg for a square hole. Ideally we'd have someone else there with exum/mills/Delly rotating through the two guard spots. They can all play with each other.

yes theres nothing to say you cant play a 3 man PG weave. but as you say the round hole square peg thing (just put in our best NBA 5 and see what happens)

Pretty proud of the guys. I think the game was way way over officiated but evenly both ways. However, that last call was definitely a bailout.
In any case, I think Australian hoops got a big boost last night. I can't think of any team of ours that got more coverage than the boomers did during these games.

WC is also 2019. That's a good amount of development that Exum, Maker and Simmons are going to receive by then. Factoring in Bogut regressing due to age, I'd hope Maker will be the more impactful player by then.
Also, I'm a huge fan of Deng Adel. I think he'll end up an impact player in the pros. He'd be just the right size to take the SF position by 2020 and is probably versatile enough to play some SG. He's a lock down defender also so would fit in great with the gritty style we play with

Given the playmaking we'll have in Delly, Exum, Mills and Simmons if Adel can play lock down defence in the small forward spot, and stand in the corner and make open 3's he'll be perfect. Doesn't need to be do anything off the bounce at all to fill a role for us.

People overrating what Bogut does during the regular season. He was just as good during the playoffs this year as he was during the regular season.
In a way yes. But in the past two seasons at key times in the playoffs he made himself a liability to Golden State. Some of it was matchup related, but there were times when they were just far better off going small because he wasn't helping at all.
