I'm not really sure where the Close in defence talk comes from. I don't really see why any of his attributes we've seen of him as a forward translate to defence. His lack of speed and agility make him a bit of a liability as a defender, not so much as a forward.

He looks to have bulked up and looks very big in the arms in some of the picks. With a big motor in him I think he can be a good forward. Still way too early to make any assumptions on him in my view.

The player I will be watching the most this offseason will be Sauce. Structurally I can see our back six going lots of ways but a lot of it depends on who is at FB.

Over the last few weeks I've moved from Rog being FB to Clark at the cornerstone, McStay at CHB and Andrews at third tall (I haven't been to training so I have no idea what group McStay is in).

While Sauce out loses some grunt this list gives us a fair bit of pace, agility and ball use.

This is the most excited I've been for preseason in awhile....hoping that light isn't an oncoming train!!

Clarke is listed at 95kg now and he's still early 20s. I know you can't always rely on reported numbers, but 195cm-95kg would seems to put you around the mark sizewise.

Of the premiers, Lake was same height and 98kgs, Gibson 189cm/92kg and Chip Frawley 193cm/95kg. Even allowing for some small misreporting, JC seems about right.

No official training today, obviously. But was riding past Coorparoo this morning and was happy to see Dawson and Freeman putting in a extra running session.

They were finishing as I waiting for my sons to catch up and Dawson came over an introduced himself. Nice young fella, said he was doing extra session to get ahead of his opponents. In addition as others have been mentioning he said training was different this year to last and thought they were fitter and was looking forward to the pre-season and starting the season well in the west.

"Extra sessions to get ahead of opponents" Let's drill this into every player on the list.Maybe we don't have the talent but why not do more than your wage requires and see what happens.

Knows what he needs to work on and working hard to fix it. Very excited to see what he can produce next year.

While it's nice to hear that, you're never going to hear a player say to a fan that they're less fit than the year before. Great they're doing extra work, but take it with a grain of salt. Pardon me for being cynical but I've heard it all before.

We probably know what potential Freeman has. Dawson is a bit more of an unknown quantity. He could end up surprising, especially if he is making the extra effort.

I hope they are all doing extra running cause with less interchange our gut running two way running will have to lift. I would say Paps, Bell and young Robbo need to play constantly this year. We get too exposed on turnovers and having these 3 (and anyone else) sprinting back to fill holes will be vital in lifting our percentage. I hope these Dawson and Freeman are an example of where all our players want to go.

Not to so much news but Josh Schache setup pretty close to my mates and I at Ocean Grove main beach on the 30th.

My best mate who lives in Grove, and actually supports the Lions as well, confirmed what a I saw when he noticed his AFL draft shorts.

I was able to pick him out even without my glasses on, and as I imagined he was quite tall and very skinny!

Yeah his Facebook page confirms he has been at OG/Barwon Heads over Xmas/New Year. Well spotted.

Paparone is pretty much a lock in teh best 22 for me. He did a ton on gut running back last season to cover space whilst teammates were dragging their heels and often unnoticed to the fans. What he gives to the team I cant see many others (if any) add. And now as you note that we need runners with the interchange tightening up, paparones role becomes even more important

I have seen people toss up between Harwood types & paparone in their best 22 when seriously I cant see guys like that forcing their way into the team at teh expense of Paps

Those players are all different builds to JC IMO which is way more relevant to his position than a few cm's here or there. He is more of a wiry, Dustin Fletcher type that looks unlikely to really fill out.

Totally disagree on this one. Will be a beast by age 25. Look at his development from age 17 - 21 (and that was with Burton o_O):

I think it is also important to note that size doesn't always equate to strength.

Different people with different physiques will have different ideal playing weights, even if their basic stats (such as height for example) are the same. Some have extremely dense muscles and can look slightly smaller but be just as strong.

Also, areas of the body that are important to have peak strength (i.e. in the core) don't always give a huge amount of size. For a key defender I would want strong hips, glutes, stomach, lower back, chest and shoulders, of which only the last 2 would be overly visible when significantly bulked up.

That said, when Clarke joined as a rookie he was as skinny as a rake. Much like Hipwood now.

That sounds reasonable. Clarke still looks pretty skinny to me in that Panthera photo.

while I agree having an extra 5-8kg for the opposition to push around always helps as it forces them to work a bit harder each contest especially by the 3rd and 4th quarters when players start to fatigue.
