Did anyone else notice the size of freemans arms with the photo of him on the bike. Geez this kid will be a monster.

Thought the same and good to see. Dissapointingly Paparone looks to not have put any on. Quite frankly he can run all day if he wants but if he wants to make it he's going to have to get stronger/bigger.
Like say Dustin Fletcher. Some blokes just won't put on mass bulk.

Hammelmann could be a very very good player for us - I remember Brett Anderson suggesting that he'd lead our forward line one day

Looking a lot bigger than last year anyway...imagine after 3 or 4 pre-seasons!

A spine with the likes of Freeman, Clarke, Schache, Hipwood, Close and Hammelmann competing for spots, I like it.

Pritty confident in this Austin guy. Seems well credentialed and has experience. Hope he whips these lads into shape.

He played a full season in 2015 - many of the others may have had spare time to put on bulk with extra weight sessions.

Paps will put on 3-5kg this pre-season :thumbsu:

I reckon he looked a touch bigger through the chest/shoulders, which is far more important than having big arms.

And also size and strength aren't the same thing. Gaining extra mass without much of a strength gain is pretty useless in a game such as ours in which the guys cover so much ground. Particularly with him being an outside player.

Sure gaining an extra couple of kilograms while also getting stronger would be great, but if he struggles with the weight gain side of things I don't think it's a huge program as long as he's getting stronger/more powerful.

He's only 21 too, I can easily see him having a Grant Birchall-esque body in a couple of years.

I hope so, part of the reason for being a little bit critical is that I am am advocate for Paps and that I am a big believer that the group from 23 and under are really going to drive this club forward and just want to see improvements in their areas of weakness. I might have to go back and have a look at Paps when he was drafted to compare as well.

I thought exactly the same. To my eye, he looked like he had thickened out through the torso. He's a lean built guy, and I imagine he'll always be a lean built guy, but I'd be really surprised if the physical side of the game was a long term problem for him.

Much easier to put the weight on with the advantages of Christmas feasts and compulsory weight sessions.

Paps certainly would have been cooked after 2015, 3rd season and played every game after brief stints in previous years. Considering the family drama he had leading into the season, I admire his work ethic and ability to maintain his run.

Has huge potential regardless of his size, just needs confidence and composure. Remember, he did absolutely floor Luke Hodge early in 2014.

interested, who were in the re hab group? anyone know if we are likely to have a full list to choose from come round 1 v west coast? that is if we assume no serious injuries training or nab challenge, touch wood.

Dizzy and Cian Hanley were running laps, so they weren't participating with the main group and as you can see from the photos, Hammer, Freeman and Dawson were on the stationary bikes. They also didn't participate with the main group until they were doing their warm down.

Geez i hope freeman is set to go round 1. If he can get over his injury concerns i can see him playing a big part of 2016 for us.

Morning everyone,

Not sure if this is in the correct thread but it is about pre season.

Darren burgess was on the radio last night talking about preseason training.

Really interesting listening considering everyone rates him as the best in the business.

Schwarz asked: would you rather take a footballer or an athlete?
DB: footballer. Stats show teams with better skills hold the ball longer, don't burn out there petrol tickets. Being super efficient creates confidence. So when commentators say it's superior fitness it's a furphy! All teams are relatively super fit.

Schwarz: why aren't you going O/S training?
DB: mainly due to soft cap spending. Tax. Got out what they needed previously.

Does make a lot of sense. Hope Austin develops that stronger body, with that balance of not sacrificing injuries. ( aka the weapon style of training) But get on the skills please! 2 years ago it was the blanket- this year should be the 50c coin. Hit that target boys!
