Here some info about Derek Smith from AFL Draft Centre: "Smith has had multiple opportunities as 23rd man for the Richmond VFL team and has shown some glimpses throughout the year. It was impressive to see him show some leadership on the field, using his voice to direct teammates. He possesses a long left foot kick and his mix of speed & agility make him a tough match up coming off the half back flank. At times he did just hesitate before going to lay the tackle, but he was willing to tackle hard and bump opponents off the ball."

Any highlights?

I saw Smith play a few times at VFL level, including his best game. To get him for free extends the Year of the Tiger. Skinny, so dunno about impacting straight away, but quick and talented HBF. With him, Markov, Short, Menadue, Drummond, possibly Naish all developing across half-back at different times in the VFL next year, I see why we let Sam Darley go.

Morris the captain next year of the VFL team?

Jack Higgins is a very strong accumulator of the footy. Preseason he'll impress enough to possibly force his way into our side for round 1. His fitness level is way above your normal TAC kid. Just has a great work ethic.

I agree trading players who have featured in our GF is ridiculous, however, we may find that a player or two become disgruntled if they are not getting regular games and request a trade. But form will determine that. You're right, we sit back and enjoy watching our list develop more as we attempt to go B2B.

I think this is an interesting discussion point, maybe this thread isn't the best place but anyhow.

So are Premiership players tradeable??

So say we get to the end of next year, and a whole host of young players are hot on the heels of more experienced players but are struggling to get into a winning team when the senior players aren't necessarily under performing. Are we better off losing the young players for more opportunity and getting bugger all in return, or trading the experienced player for a good pick and promoting the youth. Examples may be say Butler/Castagna and BEllis. We could possible get say picks 14 & 22?? for Ellis and Castagna end of next year and allow Menadue and Bolton to take thier spots and bring in 2 great kids, or lose Menadue and Bolton for picks 35 & 45.

For me I think we need to be brave and trade players with more currency if we are confident we have players in the wings who can syep in and do that job and possible be even betters players after that 50-80 games.

I think if we have a successful year again, some players may ask to leave for opportunity if natural attrition takes place.
It might be easier if they have already won one also, it may not feel like they are missing out.

So in 12 months, lets just say Bolton has replaced George for the majority of the upcoming season, and the likely hood for him moving forward will be like Miles this year, too good for VFL but only in the seniors to cover injury etc, he might think, "well I've already won a GF here, I'm not necessarily missing out if I move on, so I will go play elsewhere for greater opportunity".

Think of Suckling a Hawthorn a few years ago. Clarko had placed him on the fringe, I think he was a sub in the GF (may not be 100% on that), so he left a premiership team the year they won, let alone a year later, and went to the Dogs where if it wasn't for injury would have won a flag there.

For mine this is a no. but i would say that if one of the players came to the Club and expressed a desire to go home or chase the FA $$$ then they can go.
