I note that total includes about 1,800 women's and about 3,400 of the total are Canberra members.

Possibly some double counting if people buy both womens and mens team membership.

Pretty good effort and possibly on track for 20k plus
The GWS total of about 15,700 did not include 1850 "exclusive" GWS AFLW memberships ie total c.17,500 currently.

Curious to know where you obtained the figure of, currently, c.3400 Canberra members?

Sorry mate but the 15700 does include 1800 standalone womens members.

That and the 3400k Capitals were confirmed by the club on twitter yesterday.

Thanks for info. -Giants website a bit confusing, using the word "exclusive"for AFLW members.

3400 Canberrans, out of total 15700, dispels the theory propounded by a lot of the GWS deathriders that "GWS members are mainly from Canberra, Giants will be moving to Manuka completely soon -no one in western syd. barracks for the Giants".

Just on that, i wonder whether that represents or will represent a significant increase in GWS membership in Canberra from last year.

I cant remember but have a sneaking suspicion that it was about that number last year and the year before.

No worries mate, confused me to with the wording as well.

But importantly they are standalone womens members they are including, that should mean no doubling up.

and before any traditionalists have a go, you guys include pets.

Was thinking it hasn't really changed.

On April 27, 2016 Fairfax put the Canberra membership at "more than 3,000"

Also note - On April 20, 2015 Fairfax reported that CEO David Matthews had set the club the ambitious goal of having 10,000 Canberra-based members by 2018, which would "put the AFL club on a par with the Canberra Raiders and ACT Brumbies."

Lets hope they can build up a good sized membership in Canberra which was once an Australian Football strong hold due to the number of ex Victorian public servants that the were transferred there when Canberra took over as capital from Melbourne in 1928.

Wasn't just public servants, it was also tradesman and labourers that moved north to build the capital, most of the strong footy clubs are all inner suburban clubs with working class backgrounds.

Ainslie and Eastlake are all that survive to this day although across the border QBYan is still a strong club, clubs such as Manuka, Acton and Turner have all morphed and moved into other clubs.

Canberra is a very left leaning labour stronghold due to the public servant demographic and the working class that built it.

I did some stats at one stage and there is more far footy teams in Canberra than RL teams however the surrounding country areas are RL strongholds.

10,000 is over the top ambitious IMO, a stand alone Canberra team may get 10/15k or even 20k IMo but a Sydney based one ? - no.
I reckon in the next few years as the Giants sort of stamp themselves as a recognised club with some success, I wouldn't be that surprised if they reached figures such as 8k. 10k would be a phenomenal achievement but can't see it happening soon unless there was a sudden surge of Aussie Rules or population growth in Canberra

Just a slight correction which is a bugbear of mine its LABOR as in Australian Labor Party
The poms and NZ have Labour parties

Does anyone have a recent update on memberships?

I think the most interesting one to watch this year is Carlton, I understand they are rebuilding however curious as to see how numbers pan out.

Bombers should break the 60k barrier by round 1 which would be a fantastic achievement. If the side performs well in the first few rounds perhaps 70k is within reach

I suspect GWS numbers are going to come in a fair way on the audit though if they include womens memberships.
From what i inderstand all womens only members are included in every teams(who have a womens team) account.
Pets to.
