The attorney for Raiders first-round pick Gareon Conley doesn't anticipate his client's legal situation resolving for another 6-8 weeks.

The Raiders took Conley at No. 24 overall despite sexual assault allegations that surfaced the week of the draft. NFL training camps begin in around 12 weeks, so Conley's situation should be resolved by then. Still, the allegations may hang over Conley's head for almost the entire offseason. Conley insists he had a "consensual sexual event" with the woman making claims against him.

Despite clear inconsistencies, Gareon Conley’s lawyer insists there are none

In the aftermath of Monday’s meeting between Raiders cornerback Gareon Conley and Cleveland police, Conley’s lawyer admitted for the first time that consensual sex occurred between Conley and the woman accusing him of rape. Conley’s lawyer is now complaining about the manner in which that apparent shift in the defense strategy has been received by the media.

Attorney Kevin Spellacy tells Ian Rapoport of NFL Media that “[n]othing Gareon has said has been inconsistent,” and that Spellacy was “NOT referring to intercourse” when he acknowledged that a “consensual sexual event” occurred.

Here’s the problem with Spellacy’s latest comments. In the statement provided by Conley last week, Conley said the following: “There were several witnesses, including another female, who were present the entire time and have given statements that give an accurate account of what took place.”

The female referenced in Conley’s statement opted not to speak to police at the time they responded to the rape allegation by coming to the hotel room where it allegedly happened. Two men who were still in the room, however, did speak to police. (Conley had already left the premises.) Both of the male witnesses told police that nothing happened between Conley and the alleged victim.

So while Conley never specifically said publicly that “nothing happened,” his express reference to the witness statements creates a clear inconsistency. Unless the two male witnesses abruptly changed their version of the events in statements provided separately to Conley’s representatives, Conley’s reliance on their statements contradicts his lawyer’s admission of a “consensual sexual event.” If that were the case, someone from Conley’s camp should have pointed out the shift in recollection by the two male witnesses, in order to avoid the false impression that Conley was referring to the only witness statements about which anyone was aware, the statements from two male witnesses who insisted that nothing happened.

It’s now clear that something happened. Which is clearly an inconsistency. It’s the kind of inconsistency that could prompt a prosecutor to decide to put all of the facts in front of a jury, and to ask the jury to figure out what did and didn’t happen and, more accurately, who’s telling the truth and who isn’t.

Someone isn’t telling the truth, and Spellacy’s effort to harmonize the admission of a “consensual sexual event” with the story that was being pushed to the media last week by Conley and his representatives is failing, badly.

Rookie camps next week yeah?

Mid-July Clubs are permitted to open preseason training camp for rookies and first-year players beginning seven days prior to the club’s earliest permissible mandatory reporting date for veteran players.

Veteran players (defined as a player with at least one pension-credited season) other than quarterbacks or “injured players” (as defined in CBA Article 21, Section 6) may report to a club’s preseason training camp no earlier than 15 days prior to the club’s first scheduled preseason game or July 15, whichever is later.

Veteran quarterbacks and injured players may be required to report to the club’s preseason training camp no earlier than five days immediately prior to the mandatory reporting date for all other veteran players, provided the club has already opened (or simultaneously opens) its official preseason training camp for all rookies and first-year players.

A three-day acclimation period will apply to players who are on a club’s roster up to and including the mandatory veteran reporting date. Players who join the roster after that date may practice (including wearing pads) and play immediately after passing a physical.

Hue Jackson said Patrick Mahomes has the highest upside of the quarterbacks in the 2017 draft class. What a bright thing to say just days after selecting your own QB in Round 2.

Can Patrick Mahomes be the greatest ever Kansas City QB that they actually drafted?

This what he has to beat:

Mike Livingston. He was drafted in the second round of the 1968 draft by the Chiefs and spent the majority of his career backing up Len Dawson. His best seasons were from 1976 to 1978 - after Len Dawson retired. Livingston started 75 (31-44) career games for the Chiefs, threw for 11,295 yards, and 56 touchdowns.

Edit other fun fact....the Chiefs spend a 1st Round draft pick on a QB every 23.5 years, in contrast the Browns make a signal caller their 1st Round selection every 4.25 years (and I think they have even outdone that pace in the last decade).

Quarterback's named Patrick = 0 historical evidence of success. So I'll bank on him busting.
BUT....!!!.....he does seem to possess the physical tools.
Like Ryan Mallett apparently possessed.

Since 1998 this is the list of QB's teams have traded up to get in round 1:

Leaf, Vick, Boller, Losman, Campbell, Cutler, Quinn, Flacco, Sanchez, Freeman, Tebow, Gabbert, RGIII, Manziel, Bridgewater, Goff, Wentz, Lynch

....All the teams that traded up in this draft should be a little bit nervous looking at that list

Some of those guys were actually Ok for a while, obviously Flacco, Vick for a while, Campbell, Cutler, Freeman etc but they all fell of a cliff at some point.

That's why I like what the 49ers are doing now, creating a QB friendly environment before your franchise QB shows up and do it for the long term....haven't done this as a team since Bill Walsh and he turned a 3rd round pick into a HOFer and SB MVP.

Edit: Actually looking at it, many of those guys that team's traded up for had better careers than QBs chosen in the 1st Round where the team didn't have to trade up.

Locker, Smith, Jamarcus, Cam etc

Absolutely, but only one of them has won a SB. You might as well stand pat and draft a bust where you are instead, at least its not hurting you in future drafts.

some trades made for QB's in the last 20 years

Ryan Leaf. Pick 2 for Picks 3, 33 and a 1st round in 99
Mike Vick. Pick 1 for Picks 5, 67 and 2nd in 2002
Eli Manning. Pick 1 for picks 4, 65, 1st And 5th round in 2005
Mark Sanchez. Pick 5 for picks 17, 52
GR3. Pick 2 for picks 6, 49 1st round in 2013 and 1st round in 2014
Jared Goff. Pick 1 for picks 15, 43, 45, 76, 1st and 3rd round in 2017
Carson Wentz Pick 2 for picks 8, 77, 100, 1st round 2017, 2nd round 2018

But teams will also risk it all on non QB's and hope it works out.
Julio Jones. Pick 6 for picks 27, 59, 124, 1st and 4th round in 2012
Trent Richardson. Pick 3 for picks 4, 118, 139, 211

in a few years if trades for top 2 picks to take a QB happen it will become like 10 picks including 3 first round picks. Its just obscene what teams will pay for QB's and most of them only had the 1 good year in college.

Yet the Chargers ended up with LT and Drew Brees. If anyone won that trade on outcome it was San Diego.
Imagine where they would be if they didn't draft a QB
