great desire and dedication to the cause there by Rhys, hope a lot of the boys are following his example and i am sure they are. Chris Fagan has not taken a session yet and he is already having an effect on attitude.

Determined to make a good impression on new coach Chris Fagan, the fierce midfielder has turned to the familiar face of Geelong Falcons conditioning boss Matt Critchley to give him a headstart on his teammates.

Across more than 20 sessions since the AFL season finished, Mathieson and Essendon’s Darcy Parish have quietly returned to the Falcons’ headquarters for a series of high-intensity, highly calculated workouts designed to have them in peak condition for the start of pre-season training.

State of play: Your club's injury list for the off-season

http://m.afl.com.au/news/2016-10-29/your-clubs-injury-list-heading-into-2017

"The priority for the Lions is Dayne Beams. Knee tendinitis forced him under the knife twice this year, with the latest bout in May, but he has returned to running and will do a full pre-season. Similarly, Allen Christensen won't have his preparation hindered after a fractured collarbone that required an operation in June. Beams' brother Claye had surgery on his knee in July and is set to join the main group early next year. Dan McStay will join him around the same time after he went under the knife for a fractured ankle in July. Tom Cutler will be out for a similar period after a shoulder reconstruction. Hamstring surgery for Marco Paparone will see him eased into pre-season training. An operation on Ryan Lester's lower back means he won't rejoin the main group until around December. Minor ankle surgery to Darcy Gardiner and Lewis Taylor won't keep them from starting pre-season, while Michael Close should be right to go in a similar timeframe after a minor knee operation. A second reconstruction on Sam Skinner's left knee means he will be out for much of 2017. Reuben William will be right for the start of pre-season after a minor groin operation. - Dinny Navaratnam

Rule them out for round one: Sam Skinner (knee)"

That's a lot of surgery

12 players - 30% of the list in one year. it wouldn't be acceptable in any other other workplace, and a lot of injuries cause lots of problems that outlast the afl career.

I have concerns that the injury rate is high because of the young drafting age with the 18yos are playing against men while they are still growing. I could be totally wrong but it would be good to see figures across all clubs for injury against starting age for, say, the first year that they play 10 games.

I think drafting at 21 would help equalisation (will have a better idea of the players actual ability, rather than the guesswork that goes into kids drafted after the top 20) and it might also help reduce injury.

I guess the other filter to look at is- is our injury rate higher than the average? If so, is the strength and conditioning coaches and the health support staff up to the job? Given our turnover in theses areas it's possible so should or are the league and or players association watching this?

And is there a process whereby a flag can be raised by the league/ pa and a review put in place so the players long term physical health isn't damaged by poor standards inside the individual clubs?

Geese l am glad we drafted Mathieson. Not only has he got that fierce ability to win the ball (bulldogs style) but he also has the drive to get the best out of himself.

Hope other players on our list are doing the same but not sure some of the other young guys are. Really disappointed in them when l read the article finding out that they were drinking before and after games and setting really low professional standards etc. I can't believe our previous coaching regime allowed this.

New year, new coaching group, new standards (hopefully). Feel like McStay, Mayes, Cutler, Mathieson will kill it this year. Maybe even Keays as well.

Which article said players were drinking before games? Have you got a link to this?

I think it was just something someone said on big footy. Not an actual article?
So believe what you want to believe.
Correct me if i am wrong.

Ok so you are running off rumour and innuendo on an internet forum then. All good, but if you want the Lions to start getting serious about the way they operate, then I think the postings on this board should also.

Well said.

If Bigfooty isn't a place for mad rumour, wild speculation, baseless allegations and for quoting unnamed sources saying unverifiable things, we may as well close this whole place down.

Are you serious mate? You think BF is for serious talk. Even the best teams have boards that have wild speculation etc. Didn't even realise you were an Adelaide supporter.

Also, l don't see how us posting information etc, even if it is false (still could be true) is going to affect the daily operations of the Lions and see us rise the ladder buddy.

So some one who has been a BF member for 11 years, makes less than 10 posts per year, is going to pop on our board and an post twice. Multiple accounts guy?
