Archie's a gun - he's come from a long way behind and still has work to do, but he's got the right attitude and gave up a lot to take this on. He'll make it.
Yeah all credit it to him I say. Always thought it was just the usual media talk bs when he would say how hard he's trying, what he's given up etc. he really wants it and I reckon he's gonna make it. Definitely my view on him has done a complete turn, I reckon he's our most exciting youngster now.....

Hugh if you're reading this I apologise you're still my number 1

Ummm he's already played regular season games last year and acquitted himself quite well. As for the highlighted part, this is absolute crap. Noones choosing one over the other, they'd be playing together, something which plenty of teams do quite well without their players leaving. What a load of drivel.

????? I hope Archie never gets a game while Martin is fit and firing in the/my [Supercoach] team.

From what i had heard, In the early stages of last year Archie was still in 2 minds as to whether he had made the right decision by leaving Basketball.
But you get the impression that he has definately turned the corner and now fully invested in AFL. And i think his game will go to new heights as a result.
He will get plenty of games this year. And will become one of the best Academy stories to date, for the Lions.

Archie Smith is a 21 year old ruckman who is in his fourth year of playing Australian Rules Football. His few games that he got last year I believe have given him the impetus to go to another level this year. He is going to have bad games and he will also have good/great games but patience will be needed. His actual ruckwork craft is quite solid, attacking the contest and the man with the ball as well. The finer points of marking, linking up to move the ball by hand/foot and reading the game better will take a little bit more time. Martin is the better of the two but if they can both play and Martin is better than say Walker as a forward/ruck then we should go with this option. The pay off will be in a few more years in regards to Archie, remember he's only 21.

Can't see Smith playing round 1. Still very much a developing player with a lean build, sure you can give him a go in JLT series but not during the actual season.

Martin is a top 5 ruck in the league by himself, and that's his speciality. The idea of playing all your kids and having an incredibly young side rarely works out, all the good clubs develop their teams by having a good balance between youth and leadership/experience (with the obvious exception of GWS).

Nonetheless, Smith should be playe sometime during the season. if it was up to me let Martin play 19-20 games solo this year, and give him a rest in the remaining games with Smith stepping up. You ensure a better seasonal performance and growth of Archie.

Not having a go, but if Brisbane keeps losing and choosing young unproven players over players that are quite elite (Martin), then not only young draftees wouldn't want to stay at Brisbane, even potential star recruits would look for another AFL team to join.

Yep it's imperative that Brisbane keeps Martin fantasy relevant, longterm list development really should take a back seat this.

If you've got one of the top 3-4 rucks in the comp and he can run all day solo in the ruck, why would you not use that weapon.

As much as it hurts, if we end up using Martin forward this year, just so Archie can develop (Archie definitely can't go forward), I would have preferred to see Martin traded for an actual forward and let Smith just ruck.

Just don't think there's room for both of them in the same team. Both of their games will suffer.
Maybe or as Martin gets a bit older he starts to have trouble running out games and he does what he was recruited for and be fwd/ruck. Martin links well and can find it, but he doesn't get a lot of taps, he is fairly short for a ruckman. If Archie can take half the ruck minutes, Martin can hit his ruck minutes harder and not conserve through the game.

Archie also can be difficult up fwd because of his leap. Goal kicking needs work but he can get his hands on it and playing deep could be useful.

So there is merit to playing both rucks or we go Martin and walker /mcstay. As I said before Archie is competing with walker/mcstay for a spot, though I think McStay will go back again thus year

Initially, I thought Archie was coming from way too far back and too green in a footy sense to make it.

I certainly don't think that anymore. Credit to Archie because no only do I think he'll make it, but he is a big chance to thrive if he continues the trajectory he is on. It is not a given he will be a 100 game player, but if he continues to work hard and develops then there is really no reason he can't.

Possible round one side the way its shaping up considering injuries. Frost suspended and the following players questionable?
Christensen
Paparone
Schache
Mcstay
Harwood
Freeman

Also:
Skinner
Hanley?
Witherden
Berry

Gardiner Andrews Robertson
Cutler Hipwood Rich
McLuggage Rocky Bewick
Robbo Close Bell
Lester Walker Taylor

Martin Beams Zorko

Mayes Bastinac Matho Keays

Based on the last few games I reckon the round 1 team is emerging. Unfortunately with Frosts suspension he's out, I believe McStay is playing up forward now but if I'm wrong then he slots in the backline ahead of hammer.'

FB: N.Robbo Andrews Gardiner

HB: cutler (Hammer/McStay) Rich

C: McCluggage Rockliff Bewick

HF: M.Robbo Close Bell

FF: Barrett Hipwood Lester

Fol: Zorko D.Beams Martin

Int: Mayes, Taylor, Bastinac, Smith.

I reckon we're gonna run wth the two ruck men. Of that Christensen comes back from injury he replaces Barrett.

Frost comes in round 2 for hammer/McStay. We lack a lot of depth but hopefully we don't have too many injuries and I see us easily finishing around the 12th mark.

^ love your optimism. 12th!

Good team. Schache likely to be available for Round 1. possibly Schache in, Lester to bench, Archie out of team.

You'd also think its Mayes off half back and Rich bench/midfield. Don't think Rich really rotated to half back at all yesterday?

That forward line possibly a touch slow with none of the mediums/smalls really noted for their speed.

I guess the big question is 1 or 2 rucks.

I think he swapped between midfield, HB & wing.

It was more just to put his name down on the team rather than set in stone positions. Those midfield HF and HB guys all seem to be pretty interchangeable.

Unfortunately we don't have any speed in the team really besides hipwood.

I think 2 rucks and if Harzy is fit he comes in down back allowing us to jig the team around to fix that speed issue up forward. We are not a quick side but with Nrobbo and Cutler in we have some guys who can repeat run hard.

I like the idea of having Christensen and Robinson up forward this year. They are both dangerous around goals and quick enough to provide the defensive pressure. Hopefully Bundy's collarbone heals quickly and he is back for Round 2 against the Bombers.

Surprised how many have both Martin and Smith in their best 22s. Both very good ruckmen, but neither offer a lot up forward.
I think the days of trying to turn a ruck into a forward are gone, easier to turn a KPF into a pinch hit ruck.

I think Walker get first chance over Smith, based on averaging about 1.5 goals per game and being a pretty handy relief ruck (which is unfortunate, because I much prefer Smith).
Close as a 2nd ruck is working very well. Like our set up this week.

The team below is the team I would pick for RD1 vs the GC. I am assuming Schache is fit

B : D.Gardiner J.Walker D.McStay

HB: S.Mayes H.Andrews T.Cutler

C : R.Bewick D.Beams N.Robertson

HF: D.Rich J.Schache M.Robinson

FF : T.Bell E.Hipwood M.Close

Foll. S.Martin, T.Rockliff, D.Zorko

Inter:R.Lester, R.Harwood, C.Cox, L.Taylor

Emergencies- A.Smith, J.Barrett, B.Keays

Cox is the only controversial selection out of this team, he gets McLuggage's spot, he showed enough to suggest that he will have an impact at AFL level and is silky with the pill. Need to get games into him ASAP.

Barrett is unlucky, just can't see how we can play Beams, Rocky and Barrett in the same team. Too any one paced players through the midfield.

Happy to give N.Robertson an extended run, the only knock on him is with ball in hand, I believe that if he gets enough opportunity he will become more comfortable at AFL level and will start to make better decisions, we need his run and grunt.

I like it, however, my only concern would be we are going in too tall with all of the following in your side: Martin, Schache, Close, Hipwood, Andrews, Walker, McStay, and Gardiner. I like the idea of giving Walker a shot in the backline as a KPD though and I also like the structure of the three talls up forward so I think the only one I would cut is McStay as I believe Andrews and Gardiner have earned their spots in the backline and we obviously need Stef in the ruck.

Dylan, not saying he will be selected. I am going with Walker on Wright, Andrews on Lynch, Gardiner gets Grant or the mobile 3rd tall, not sure where McStay really plays, I am happy to have him in all 3 sections of the field. Just must be picked.

Don't want to see us be ridiculously undersized against Wright and Lynch, so Walker is a must for me. Leap of faith needed by the coaching staff

Not sure we have a runner outside of the team who covers the ground better than our talls.

Harwood - Andrews - McStay
Mayes - Gardiner - Cutler
Bewick - Beams - Rich
Bell - Schache - Close
Barrett - Hipwood - Robinson
Martin - Zorko - Rockliff

Lester - Taylor - Robertson - Bastinac

C.Beams- Archie - Mathieson

Based on trial matches anyway. I'd have Rhys over bastinac but with not seeing him in the JLT probably a low chance round 1.

Haven't read much recently but does anyone know what the injury status is of schache, Hugh, bundy etc like how long til they are back and how bad the situation is?

BACK LINE
Gardiner Andrews Bewick
Cuttler Walker Mayes

MIDFIELD.
Zorko Barrett Rich
Martin DBeams Rockcliff

FORWARD LINE
Robinson Schache Bell
Hippwood Close Cox (Big Call)

OFF THE BENCH
Robertson (rotating through backline)
Lester (rotating through middle & forward)
Mathieson (rotating through middle)
Taylor (Rotating through forward & wing)

WHO ELSE SHOULD BE IN THE 22.
- Frost
- Christiansen
- McCluggage

WHO'S GONNA GET LOTS OF GAMES
- Keays
- McStay
- Bastinac
- Paparone
- Berry
- Harwood
- Smith
- Freeman
- Hammer
