2018 Or 2022 Fifa World Cup Affecting The AFL Season?

The grounds have to have not been used for a certain number of weeks prior to the tournament as well as the month the tournament itself lasts for. So that's pretty much a 2 month gap or so the AFL will have to take.

... the US had the highest attendance of any FIFA world cup though.

Like I said before it'll only take a handwritten letter by Mr. Obama to give them the World Cup.

Well, that's what you say, but you also think that the northern and southern hemispheres are on different timezones.

Im pretty sure the rule is that World Cup grounds cant be used for other sports for a month prior to the start of the tournament, which would mean an 8 week break, either that or move games to stadiums that the world cup wont be using

They could just upgrade the seating and facilities, AAMI would be a fine ground to host world cup group matches that wont draw large crowds

1. It's an oval ground - that fact doesn't eliminate it on its own but it doesn't help
2. It's been stated publicly that it is not FIFA compliant (due to its size, and the angle of the seating tiers)
3. It's owned by SANFL.
4. Adelaide United's current home, Hindmarsh Stadium, is too small so there is demand for a larger rectangular venue in Adelaide.
5. Adelaide Oval is slightly smaller and have announced plans to upgrade to 55k - so in the unlikely event an existing venue had to be used, it would be AO.

The other thing is, there is no such thing as a WC match that won't draw large crowds. Virtually every match is a sellout. Ukraine v Tunisia sold out the 72k capacity Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Togo v Switzerland sold out the 67k capacity Dortmund stadium. The lowest attended match was something like 37k in a 43k stadium.

If Australia gets the World Cup then I imagine the AFL would start earlier in the year (say the start of March) and finish later (say the end of October) with an extended mid-year break that lasts the length of the World Cup.
Could cause alot of problems as the cricket season probably wont want to move to accomodate the AFL and they are both Ashes years, so a very big season of International cricket, the AFL would be better off with a 17 round season, otherwise having their grounds limited for the first few weeks and the finals

Only domestic cricket (Shield etc.) would be affected. The Government (federal and states) would yell at them and tell them they don't have a choice. Hosting the World Cup would be rather exceptional circumstances.

That might be easier, but it wouldn't be necessary:

WA: Cricket at WACA, AFL at Stadium WA
NSW: Cricket at SCG, AFL at Stadium Aus (for "overlap" period)
Vic: Cricket at MCG, AFL at Docklands, Kardinia (for "overlap" period)
SA: Cricket at AO, AFL at Football Park (assuming SANFL won't let of FP)
Qld: Could be a bit difficult - maybe cricket at Gabba, all AFL at Carrara?
Tas: Cricket at Bellerive, AFL at York Park

The upgrade of the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium should mean that the A-League won't play at Docklands any more, so they should also be out of the way.

Of course a lot of things are going to happen to all league structures and the venues before now and 2018/2022!

I'd be excited to see the world cup here but not at the expensive of 2 months of AFL (1 month leadup where we apparently couldn't use the grounds and 1 month during the competition).

I don't want to see a season of our national sport get destroyed by a peripheral sport. I have empathy for those rugby followers who would be thinking the same thing up north.

There will have to be an 8 week gap in the middle of the year
Normal starting time
17 week season
5 week gap in the middle (have the 4 WC lead in weeks without using the MCG, Subiaco, Carrara).*
Finals, same time as normal

Either that, or make the finals go into October, but that will make the preseason too short in the build up to the 2019 or 2023 seasons.

OR, 22 round season, starting early and aboloshing the NAB cup.

*4 away games in a row for West Coast and Fremantle. Would be hard.

It won't be a full gap of 8 weeks - it will be 4 weeks of not using Stadium WA, MCG, Stadium Australia, Carrera Stadium then 4 weeks (well, 5 weekends) of no games. You could still use Docklands, York Park, SCG etc.

NRL will probably be more affected, because the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, SFS, Lang Park, Newcastle Stadium and Willows Stadium (Townsville) will be out of the picture as well.

This is assuming the current impressions/assumptions in the media of which stadia will be used is correct.

In all seriousness mate that is a very selfish attitude. This is the biggest sporting event in the world, bigger than the Olympics and you would rather not have it because it is a so called "peripheral sport"?

What about homebush? haha
Forget the big one...
Ahh well, they only pull 15,000 crowds anyway.

So they should be stuffed around for 2 consecutive seasons just so the AFL can have a full season? No reason why the AFL cant cut back their season, would be a fair draw for the first and only time

Plus International cricket would be affected, what if Brisbane earn a home prelim? The first test at the GABBA would be just a couple of weeks later or should they have to shift their tests as well just in case
