The degree of difficulty confuses me, they land and i think, awesome jump, apparently though it's not good enough for top 6.

It is like kicking a goal from 40m out directly in front compared to 50m out in an angle!

Both great kicks if you nail them but the harder one scores more points when done right.

Smother it with pine cones or some shit apparently to give them depth perception for landing
They place pine needles on top to allow them to have better depth perception.

They put pine needles on the landing so they can see it and they don't die, do the same thing with the moguls. Similar idea to the blue lines in other events.

I'm so gutted for Fourcade. I can't believe what just happened. 18/18. 2 shots remaining. Realistically one miss is fine. You've build that lead. 2? No. He misses the final two, the last by the smallest margin. Far out, he was absolutely gutted at the finish line. Threw away gold.
