TOM GREEN

The bullocking midfielder from Canberra is a member of GWS’s academy but is instead a Richmond supporter with Tigers links. His grandfather, Michael Green, played in four premierships for the Tigers in the 1960s and 70s and father, Richard, played for Richmond’s under-19s before deciding to pursue a career in the army instead.

Giants academy gun Tom Green has been likened to Patrick Cripps.
Michael Green flies over Tigers teammate Francis Bourke.

lol GF a tiger legend and his old man quit the tiges to join the army. carved out of teak these blokes. Get him to the club balmey

current depth outside of AFL premiership player '19

who’s this rance you speak of? Will he make it?

Mike Green what a marking machine...will be keeping an eye on young green!
Would have been great if his grandson was allocated to the Tigers , Exactly the type we need hope he makes his way to richmond in 2 years time when Cotchin is just about done

Yes, young Rance comes from a great WA pedigree.
One to watch for sure. A great get.
Seriously though in reality this year would be hoping for a tall key defender.
No need for new forwards or mids in the current mix.
Can hold those types off for a couple of years.

I think we will get a ready made defender to come to the club in a year or 2

He is just doing his time at GWS - Sam Taylor

Stop it:drunk:

In all seriousness if we got him i would celebrate.
We should be on the phone to his manager every week and do everything we possibly can to get him to move.
He is a WA kid but so is Alex Rance and would be the main target for me to replace Rance

So it appears that we're going to take up to 5 picks in the draft and based on our current list here is my wish list of players for each pick.

Pick 19

Cooper Stephens 188cm 83kg Inside Midfielder
Stephens hasn't played since April due to a broken leg, but after recovering was able to test at combine where he was joint winner of the yo-yo test (21.8) & ran 2km in 6:17. Would give us another big bodied inside midfielder to go with Graham Ross & RCD as the next wave coming through.

Jeremy Sharp 189cm 81kg Outside Midfielder
Having lost the gut running ability of Ellis a kid like Sharp would be an ideal replacement. Has that combination of endurance (6:12 for 2km) and speed (2.9sec for 20m) that seems to be a prerequisite for our midfielders at the moment. A dual U18 AA he could slot in as another wing option down the track. Played 6 games at league level in the WAFL, which shows he can play against mature bodies, where he averaging 15.5 disposals 5.3 marks 1.9 tackles.

Trent Rivers 188cm 85kg Midfielder/Defender
Played mostly across HB at U18 level with stints in the midfield where he can rack up plenty of footy, averaged 26.8 disposals 5.2 marks 4.9 tackles & 1 goals again in 9 games at Colts level for East Fremantle.

Picks 38 39 41 & 56

Sam Philp 185cm 80kg Inside Midfielder
If we miss on Stephens then Philp is the kid I'd take at 38, Philp is an inside midfielder averaging 21.4 disposals 5.9 clearances & 5.8 tackles, but wins less than 50% of his disposals in the contest meaning that he gets on his bike and covers the ground well and a 21.5 yo-yo result shows the big tank that he has. As with Stephens he would round out the young inside midfield group of Graham Ross & RCD as the next generation coming through.

Dyson Hilder 195cm 91kg KPD
With the current breakdown of our list the addition of a KPD like Hilder would round out our KPP/Ruck stocks nicely. Played U18 reserves & senior level in the SANFL this year showing that he can mix it with mature bodies if called upon. Would be able to slot him into the VFL back 6 along with Garthwaite and Balta which would then allow us to use Miller up forward. Hilder also showed in the preseason this year that he could play up forward and through the midfield, but once settled into the defensive role showed composure. Was one of SA U18 vice captains which shows leadership potential.

Harrison Jones 194cm 74kg KPF
With Moore being moved on there is an opening for another KPF and Jones would provide a nice alternative to CCJ & Chol in our VFL line up as a mobile type of forward who gets up the ground to be an option for defenders coming out of the back line. He also has the ability to put defensive pressure on averaging 3 tackles a game as a KPF is a great effort.

Darcy Cassar 184cm 82kg Midfielder/Defender
Darcy is a kid who could start out as a HB who can accumulate possessions on the outside and then develop into a Lambert type of midfielder who can play a mix of inside and outside midfield roles. Averaged 23 disposals 5.3 marks 4.7 R50s & 2.5 tackles playing wing/HB for the Jets. With Houli nearing the end Cassar could be a long term replacement in that role.

Brock Smith 188cm 81kg Defender
Smith is a footballer playing football. He isn't an athlete who runs sub 3 second 20m or 6:30 2km, but what he does do is stop opponents first and foremost but can also get out and accumulate possessions. I wrote earlier about Smith being what Vlastuin & Grimes would be if combined. Averaged 19.6 disposals 5.4 marks and 5.5 R50s for Gippsland this year. In the Champs he averaged 13.7 disposals 2.7 marks 2.3 R50s & 3 tackles.

Ryan Byrnes 181cm 80kg Midfielder
Brynes was the Dragons captain this year and averaged 25.4 disposals 3.5 marks 3.5 tackles 5.4 clearances & 5.5 I50s. Brynes offers the ability to accumulate the footy on the outside, win the footy on the inside and has that rare ability to use both sides of his body when disposing of the footy. Needs to clean up his disposal on the run to take his game to the next level.

Flynn Perez 188cm 81kg Midfielder
Perez didn't play a game in 2019 due to an ACL injury, but in his bottom aged year was good enough to be picked for the Future Stars game at the 2018 Grand Final which says that recruiters rated him highly. In his 2018 season he averaged 16.5 disposals 4.5 marks 2.3 tackles 2.7 I50s & 2.5 R50s playing on the wing. Having missed the 2019 season it might be a bit of a reach to take him in this range, but as I said, he was rated inside the top 50 of the draft 12 months ago, so we could afford to take a chance on him with the depth of our list.

Joshua Shute 187cm 73kg Outside Midfielder
Smooth moving winger who has played SANFL reserves most of the year where he averaged 20.5 disposals(85% efficiency) 6.7 marks & 3.9 I50s per game playing against mature bodies suggests that while only 73kg he isn't phased playing against men. With some development in an AFL program his game could translate into a handy utility who could play a variety of roles, which is something that is highly valued at Richmond.

Darcy Chirgwin 191cm 80kg Inside Midfielder
After missing the first half of the season Chirgwin returned in round 11 with 32 disposals (20 contested) 11 clearances & 16 tackles and for the 7 games he ended up playing he averaged 24.7 disposals (>50% contested) 7.9 tackles & 5 clearances per game. His combine results weren't great with a 3.2 second 20m time & 8.8 second agility result. However this could be because of a low fitness base having missed a large chunk of the season with injury. Get him into an AFL program and he could flourish.

Ideally I'd be happy with a haul of:
Cooper Stephens - inside mid
Sam Philp - inside/outside mid
Dyson Hilder - KPD
Darcy Cassar -outside mid
Darcy Chirgwin - inside mid

So it appears that we're going to take up to 5 picks in the draft and based on our current list here is my wish list of players for each pick.

Would love to get hold of Freo's pick 22.
Makes me more annoyed with the Ellis compo.Stephens(19) & Sharp (21) 😠

Still think we can do well with the picks that we've got given our recruiters performances over the last few years. I'm far from a draft expert, so these kids above are based on the rankings others have them in, but it does show that there are quality kids available into the 40-50 range. That's part of the reason I'm not overly fussed about trying to trade up. A number of clubs traded out of this draft either last year or in this year but we've got a handful of picks and it presents a good chance to build up the depth of talent in development for the future.

We have a solid ground of players with >25 games:
Baker Soldo Markov Stack Balta Chol Garthwaite Ross DES Naish CCJ Pickett Aarts RCD English Miller Turner

Adding another 5 draftees to that mix would be good management IMO.

this Stack character sounds promising also

just trade up to get them...

our first rounder will be 18-20 next season anyway

Understand what your saying RT.Like you I'm no expert but while i have great faith in our recruiting team(who wouldn't be unhappy unless you live out west.😉), Their job would be made much easier if we didn't get shafted by the AFL.
Picks 19/21/38 & 41 would have us ideally placed in so many scenarios it's not funny.
But anyway it is what it is.

We don't really know how many more years Rance would play so I would like to see at least one tall KPD selected this year to support Grimes and Vlaustin.
In terms of midfield, we have far more depth, even Lambert could play foreseeably another six years to 34.
