I think Trav is on the money there. I don't think Nick would give a shit about making a decision on his ex coach. He was a ruthless leader as a player and loves the club, so whatever is in the clubs best interests would be his priority, and if that included making a call on the senior coach, regardless of the relationship he has with him, he would make the call IMO.

I think Rooey is the last person that you would say is afraid of confrontation or hurting someone's feelings. His commitment to excellence is unmatched in our clubs 150 year history.

No the reality is that there was a substantial change in the list between 17 and 18

Dempster didn't play a game in 2017 though?

Can we just move this stuff to the relevant thread please?

We now have two threads poisoned.

"The reality is there wasn't a heck of change between the list in 2017 and 2018, not enough for it suddenly to be good one year and then poor the next."

And it only gets worse when you look at it 5 games into the 2018 season because then you add

Josh Bruce 91 games
Dylan Roberton 128 games
Koby Stevens 91 games

So that's 1142 games worth of difference between the lists of 2017 and 2018.

Not to mention the fact that at least four of those six you named were leaders.

Loved that footage of one of those team sprints in the latest Linton St episode. Parker and Kent showing some real acceleration, right up front with Steven, and Coff wasn't too far behind.

The pace will transform us, IF we can get enough of it into the starting 22. It will mean that opposition teams can't just zone off and close the space. They will have to stay hard on their man, which means they can be led away to clear out space.

Dempster didn't play a game in 2017 though?

The loss of Dempster was significant and underplayed in its importance. He was one of the most dedicated players off field. He was a brilliant example to the new players - a self-motivated fitness freak. He was also a bloody good defender on field. He was a leader on field and in the Gym. The significance of his retirement due to complications of concussion had an effect on the morale of the club and his recruitment by Hawthorn was also a big plus for them and a loss for us.

The fact that he didn't play a game in 2017 understates just how much of a loss he was for us.

I was lucky enough to catch the final training session of the year, so I'll give a few little tidbits.

Blake struggled, it's only one session and it was out of character from what I normally see but his kicking and awareness were absolutely horrible to the point where it stood out. The kid is one if my favourites but it was enough to be a little concerning for the first time for me.

Big Sam is a way off, Sam and Lew both really struggled at training especially with the fitness, understandable for him though as he is new to it all. I went way too early on him after watching the handball drill. Still plenty there to work with.

I have never seen Billy in better shape though, being number one has made him come into his own.

Josh Bruce is training the house down, I have been critical of him in the past but he is flying at the moment. What's perhaps more pleasing is that Paddy is keeping up with him also.

Josh Battle has a bit of a way to go to fully understand the nuances of being a defender but there is no reason why he can't be our Sicily. Kid could be a gun in that position and the spot will potentially be his from as early as round one.

Robbo looked very solid in the match sim, it's very easy to forget how good some people are when they are injured. This bloke is AA quality, I'm slowly realizing how important he is to us out there.

I paid a bit more attention to Coff this week. Dead. Set. Gun. His kicking, speed and composure is off the charts. Still learning how to be effective in contests in my opinion but this kid has all the tools to be elite within 12-24 months. Unfortunately I didn't really catch much of Clark so can't really comment.

The usual suspects in Stuv, JB, Ross and to a lesser extent Gresh and Sincs were all dominating.

During preseason last year I mentioned that Ben Long was going to surprise a few and he did. He keeps on getting better and stronger.

During match sim it was interesting as there seemed to be a gap in our foot skills. We were either sublime, or bloody horrific. There was a bit of a wind around and overall it was pretty good but every now and then it was poor. The expectations and standards are much higher out there this year though. Guys like White looked great controlling the ball out of defence.

Finally, I am in awe of big Max. He was just jogging laps but he just glides across the turf like a racehorse, left Rice and Armo for dead on multiple occasions.

All in all, it was a pretty brutal session and I was getting tired just watching the boys train hard. They are leaving no stone unturned and I'm loving what I'm seeing out there compared to previous years.

Oh and one other thing, there is a serious amount of alpha peacock around the new mature age recruits. It's actually nice to see to be honest. The biggest alpha though is Max, he doesn't act it, but you just know everything he touches is solid gold.
I think you need a solid gold payment. Love it, appreciate it

By the way, how did you think the mature agers went? Hoping at least one of Robbie, Parker or Hind really push hard.
