Jordan Dawson

Name: Jordan Dawson
Team: Sydney Swans
Position: FWD/DEF
Bye round: 13

Why should I pick him?
Like Shane Woewodin’s famous peroxide locks or Pamela Anderson’s bust in the 90’s, the most eye-catching and enticing aspect of Jordan Dawson’s 2020 prospects is his rare FWD/DEF status. While it’s early days, it looks like we’ll have a dearth of Premiums available in the forward line – so the ability to slot in a value pick like Dawson into one of the weakest lines we’ve seen in years is significant, while the trading flexibility it affords you throughout the year is potentially massive. Unlike midfield-eligible DPP’s – where you always want them in their lower positions to maximise your access to the big name accumulators – Dawson’s FWD/DEF eligibility will make him a legitimate swingman as you look to capitalise on the best value acquisitions over the course of the season by simply not limiting your options to just the forward or back lines respectively.
So, he’s got the DPP, but can he score? At an average of 82.7 last season, the short answer is yes, kind of. But taking a sneaky look under the hood, the numbers are much more promising (and arousing) than you’d think.
As a third-year player on the fringe at Sydney last year, Dawson was forced to win his spot in any way he could. This came in the form of a ‘high half forward’ role to start the season and he had mixed fortunes, being dropped once and producing scores of 43, 71 and 92; typically high-variance output for a forward. Then he caught his break.

Perennial Swans defenders in Jarrad McVeigh, Heath Grundy and Nick Davis have all retired this off-season, as well as sometimes-back flanker Zak Jones moving on to butcher the footy in greener pastures. This leaves a permanent role as Sydney’s go-to user just begging to be snapped up by Dawson, much like an unguarded eski at a house party.

Am I confident that he’ll earn that role? Put it this way – if I’m Sydney’s coaching staff and I’m looking for someone to take care of the footy in the back half, I’m looking directly at the guy who kicked an incredible 15.1 at goals over the 2019 season – the most accurate goalkicking season by any player over the last 20 years. I want the ball snug in the hands of the guy who kicked at a league-leading 70% accuracy on scoring shots from outside 50 in 2019. Basically, Jordan Dawson’s left boot is a filthy pig and I’m in the mood for bacon.
If I was going to pick Dawson I’d probably prefer picking him as a forward.

Milera routinely punched out 40's and 50's yet his fanboys could never be swayed.

Is he shit at football? No. But for SC purposes, I'm looking forward to watching the melts again in 2020.
Milera averaged 95 before getting injured in round 5 vs Gold Coast.
wasn’t the same player when he came back from injury.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't with Seagull.

I can just imagine campaigner uncle Jiska coming on here round 1 after Seagull scabs his way to 130 from 4 contested posessions.......

"Are you telling me you guys didn't start Lloyd? Bizarre. Why wouldn't you, he's been the number 1 defender for the past 3 seasons now"

Touche.

Pick him for the same reason you're going Gawdy.

Who cares if he sits in your forward or defence? Entirely irrelevant to start the season. All comes down to what rookies are available on each line.

Because it might be easier to find an alternative D2/D3 than an F2/F3. Pickings are pretty slim up forward and there a number of defenders I would make a case for ahead of similar priced forwards.

Makes absolutely no difference. Whether you put Dawson at D2 with Hill at F6 or Dawson at F6 and Hill at D2 you'll still score exactly the same. You're just preoccupied with the price tag associated with the position of a name on your screen. Your teams scoring ability doesn't rely on positions whatsoever. Select your team, then list your players in Excel and sort alphabetically, or as gameday does, by order of matches for the weekend.

The only real relevance in where you select him is how many rookie spots it leaves available on that line, which at this point is circumstantial.

Weren't you sooking in another thread about this board being negative? Anywhoo ...

Milera is a jet who just needs to stay injury free and played in one position. 400k that could average 95 if played on a wing or HBF.

If Andrew McLeod was 400k at the start of a season he'd be in 95% of sensible teams ...
You take that back.

Naming Milera on the same board let alone the same post as Andrew McLeod. Ludacris.

I never mentioned having Hill with him although that’s a bonus. I pick players based on whether I think they can be top in their position not because they give me a swing set. It’s overrated in my opinion. Based on last seasons average Dawson would already be pushing a top 10 forward of what’s left available. If he improves as people hope there’s a much better argument that he’ll be a top 6 forward than a top 6 defender.

Returning Crows defender Tom Doedee tells why a serious knee injury didn't mean the end of the world to him
Tom Doedee doesn’t sweat the small stuff.
He learnt that lesson the hard way 11 years ago when, at the tender age of 11, his oldest brother, Harley, lost both feet in a horrific car accident

There’s a lot more to life than football and while I was angry for the first couple of days, I was still walking and there are a lot of people in the world who can’t walk.

His only hiccup has been a minor left hamstring strain he sustained just prior to the club breaking for its three-week Christmas break, which put him in the rehab group while his teammates sweltered on the track in 40-degree heat.

“It’s just a minor setback, a little aggravation, which has caused me to pull back in terms of the loading I’m getting into my knee,’’ Doedee told The Advertiser.

“It’s not related to my knee and I should be good to go when we return for pre-season training.

“The knee’s coming along really well and I’m on track to play in round one.’’

Doedee - whose rebuilt knee “popped’’ when he attempted to tackle Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead, planted his foot and looked to change direction - wants to get a full Marsh Community Series pre-season game under his belt before putting his hand up to play in round one.

Despite having played just 21 AFL games, Doedee is so mature and well respected that he has been touted as a potential leadership group member this year supporting 11-year veteran Rory Sloane, who is almost certain to be named sole skipper following Taylor Walker’s decision to relinquish the co-captaincy.

“Leadership has always been a big part of my career, through basketball, football and schooling, I’ve always looked at leadership as an aspirational thing,’’ he said.

“We have some really exciting young players coming through, guys like Chayce Jones, Darcy Fogarty, Ned McHenry and Jordon Butts, and the promise of this group is very high.

Interesting that in any discussion about future Crows .....Jordan Butts is always mentioned by teammates, & development Coaches

What is the go with Stephen Hill at Freo?

I know he has been injured but 190k defender who will play games if fit.

Any Freo supporters got an insight as to how he is traveling and his future?

Always played well when I watched him in the SANFL. Sitting as a rookie defender in my side at the minute.

What do we all think?

Can score well when playing through the middle, but will only do it if Ward, Kelly, Coniglio, Taranto or Hopper get injuries, plus they've got the new Green, Caldwell and Hately all hanging around now.

Great form to finish 2019 but is it reflective of a GWS side with a fit Kelly, Ward and Coniglio all available?

I think this is a bit of a misnomer as I think he scores just as well in SuperCoach when playing off half back. Nice round 14 bye as well.
