Yes we have but I have a funny feeling about Dawson being the next Zac Jones. The last contract was very similar to the last Jones contract. Just 2 years, yadda, yadda yadda and then goneski.

No facts just a supposition.

I get the opposite feeling. I fee gun!! hehe

Was wondering this, surely we're not paying the full cap.
Concerns that we overpaid Heeney and Reid as rival clubs came with big offers

I would hope that we are paying the full cap.

Each year of the last few we have been seriously linked with a player who would demand a high salary (Darcy Moore, Joe Daniher). There must have been enough money in the cap for us to be able to pay them their contracts that would both be over $500k quite easily.

Once those deals fall through, though, there is no real reason not to immediately restructure existing contracts to shift money from future seasons to fill that gap.

The only downside of doing this is that you risk getting players on front loading contracts requesting trades at the back end of their contract, which means there is less cap space available to attract a suitable replacement. For the most part, though, I think that is a risk worth taking.

If we had the space for Daniher in 2020 and we didn't use it on him, we should have shifted the equivalent amount out of our 2021 contracts in to our 2020 contracts, so that we have additional free cap space for 2021. Any amount we are under the full cap in 2020 is money we could/should be spending on players in 2021.

Don't you get more cap space if you pay unders for a couple years? Am I imagining that?

When you have talented young players performing well. Then it attracts the attention of other clubs. And we generally have to pay a bit more to re-sign them than if they were fairly unknown.

Eg our fans knew how good Rowbottom was based on last season. But middle of this season you started to see a lot more rival fans commenting on him. Which made me happy that we had extended his contract early last year.

There is a "banking" allowance that does allow certain years to be over the full cap limit, yes: https://www.afl.com.au/news/50486/save-now-spend-later

The maximum you can go under the cap in any season, and therefore maximum you can go over the following year, is 5%, so around $650k. That is about what you would expect Moore or Daniher to be on, but could be a little less, so it would still make sense where possible to shift money from your latter year contract in to the current year, at the very least to that point.

I froth at the possibility of us getting Phillips. Can you imagine those two Oakleigh boys in the heavy stuff kicking it out to Campbell and Mc Inerney? If we get Gulden that would be the icing on the cake. Then if we were to have another poor year next year we could target tall FWDs and possibly a good young Ruck.

I have a different view, back ended until JPK, Hannebery, Jack, McVeigh, Parker got their money first and then Mills, Heeney and ors got theirs later.

I wasn't referring to Mills, Heeney & co who's contracts were done 2-3 years ago. I was referring more so to those signed in the last couple of years.

I was assuming we would get a choice between DGB, Phillips and Thilthorpe at our pick.

But if Adelaide got a compensation pick (unknown at this stage), we might end up with a choice between DGB/Thilthorpe or DGB/Phillips.

Though it is always hard to predict which player the Swans recruiting team would really want. I think they also look at a players attitude.

I’ve seen it said a few times that Adelaide will take Thilthorpe with their first pick, it seems a bit unlikely, it’s probably a couple of picks higher than he’s rated but wouldn’t be far off, plus he’s from SA.

That would mean it would probably be a choice between Hollands/DGB/Phillips with the first two being more likely.

I’m just really hoping for Hollands, he just has that X factor, that fluency in the way he moves that sets him apart IMO.

Are you saying Heeney is on 1m a year?

I don't think North offered him a million. I think that was a running joke because they offered Dustin Martin seven figures and he rejected them, and then they went on an unsuccessful run of chasing Gaff, Heeney and De Goey, all of whom are a level below Martin.

However I do think Heeney would be on at least about 800k, which would be fitting. At the end of the day whether we think he is an A grader or an underperforming FIGJAM, anyone with his talent is going to be on that kind of money at ANY club.

Imo Heeney is worth about 650-700k as of now, to think he could be on 800k+ which is Dangerfield money is a bit ridiculous.

The Roos offered Heeney over a million dollars a season according to Channel Seven’s Tom Browne, with the club also a chance to pursue the 20-year-old star again at the end of next season when he comes out of contract.

Well

A) That didn't happen, he came out of contract, and re-signed.

B) It's Tom Browne.

As for his worth, like I said when you have players like him it's less about output and more about the fact that any club that has him simply would not want to lose him. He's the most talented Swan since Goodes, and that stands for a hell of a lot more than whether you, I or anyone else rates him.

At the time Kennedy, Hannebery and Parker were considered a trio of elite mids. So I don't think Heeney would have been paid more than them.

But as our first really big academy star, I think the club would have been eager to sign him up long term on a high salary. (Though it is possible his contract might have been staggered where he was not getting huge amounts in his initial years.)

Heeney = Marketing $

Almost hope Adelaide do get a comp pick so they take Thilhorpe with one of them!
