Not when he can’t get a game for North, he’s been told to get a new club and is in the twos. You don’t get first rd picks for those players.

LOL!
Exactly Polec and Daw (had not played for nearly 18months a goodbye game that was woeful) were dropped from a team/club in utter turmoil, by a bloke (Rhyce Shaw) who is desperately trying to teach his new club some proper winning footy culture!

They are discards for a reason (S)!

Also Polec is reported ly on several yrs @$7-800k per yr - was the most stupid desperate recruiting endeavor in modern AFL history.
Desperate to land a fish ANY fish!
If he finds a club or stays Stephens will be running rings around him if not next year then definitely the next

And cause I want to get some hype up:

Highlights of Phillips.

Very last passage of play, Campbell nails a kick to Phillips from edge of centre square.

Has a lot of GO! Is he just tougher than the boys.
An accumulator /distributor like Tom Mitchell (stats will be inflated chck out how many handballs and retrurn recieves) How many kicks????

Check this bloke out. ( Will just need to send him and Dylan Stephens to a force feed high protein feedlot/gym)

Check out the both feet foot skills!!!!!

You run into problems with performance based contracts. Big problems under a salary cap system.

Happened to the Tigers in the NRL 10 season ago (or something like that).

They had a very similar year to us. Horrendous injuries. Ran second last or whatever. Because of the injury list they had to give games to a whole bunch of players they never thought would make first grade in the next few seasons. Like a lot - it was a comedy of hammys and all sorts of things for a while.

That triggered performance based bonuses for making first grade and games played bonuses for fringe guys they never thought would play X games and the poor old tiggers who couldn't beat their way out of a wet paper bag had a salary cap breach.

The league saw the issue and were kind as such BUT they changed the accounting rules a bit and you actually had to include bonuses in the cap to some extent (can't be bothered looking it all up sorry). Still got nutted for a technical breach and they did self report explaining that, basically, they could play with 10 guys or breach the cap but it was there.

That's part of the issue especially if you have a lot of performance stuff kick in.

You can also end up the opposite - no one gets a bonus and because of factoring in bonuses you fail to pay the 95% minimum....it gets too hard to work out even before the shenanigans kicks in as clubs game the system.

I remember that season. Was horrendous, and we've never really recovered (then again we were shit long before that as well).

Daw is just a touch old for my liking. 2 years ago I'd have been all for it for him to play in defence for us but with McCartin there now seemingly, not sure he has a real role to play with us. Don't rate him as a first ruck.

I think he'd be a good fit at Essendon, Gold Coast, St Kilda, or the Dogs.

Daw is 29 and wouldn't get a run in our defence.. Be behind, Rampe, Fox, Melican, Dawson, McCartin, Allirr maybe Brand, OConnor, Gould
Polec is just about to turn 28 and would be behind JPK, Parker, Hewett, Florent, Rowbum, McInerny, Stephens, even probably Bell and Warner, not to mention Campbell and Gulden.. too old for our midfield
Neither are good enough to worry about

I am bullish about our kids, but let's not exaggerate... Polec would not be behind Florent, Rowbottom, McInerney or Stephens.

Phillips is not huge. Just wins the ball and gets it out. Good feel of the game. Few may think he is limited but feel he would've stepped up this year being number 1 mid. Largely gets it and dishes it out. Feel he would complement Campbell and current mid contingent.

Phillips is an above average kick for an inside mid. They don't need to be super efficient by foot as the bulk of their work is contested, so long as they can hit a target when they need to. Phillips is pretty reliable in this regard.

yes he would
we going to continue to develop the young crew. They may not be as good as Polec (some will say they're better than him), but they would be selected before him every time.

Only chance Polec would get a game is if JPK, Parker and Hewett are injured

More likely he'd replace (and be an upgrade on) one of Clarke, Bell, Taylor, these types.

Phillips looks great.. but
We're getting two similar sized mids who are highly rated and can do similar things in Campbell and Gulden
Twomey has him rated at p9
Use our p3 on a top 5 prospect and someone who offers something different

He seems like a waste of salary, a list spot and draft picks to me, especially at his age

I do not mind Twomey but does have a lot of recency bias in his ratings. Only reason Phillips has slipped is due to lack of recent vision.

Phillips is an extractor, Campbell is a distributor. Gulden - unsure where he will end up at afl level. Think mcglynn type in terms of position

Fair enough.

As for Phillips, Twomey is simply way off the mark here. I don't know how anyone with a brain could say that Bruhn is better than Phillips, not to mention have Henry in the same realm, so you could just about discard his ratings. He's usually got a pretty good judgment, but I think he was on the glass didgeridoo at the time of publication.

I also don't see many similarities between Phillips and the two academy boys. They can rotate through the mids, sure, but they are not the contested beasts who could do it for four quarters at such a high standard that Phillips can. His ability to extract the ball and find his team mates is unrivalled in this year's draft crop, and he gives constant second and third efforts to become a high accumulator, something I don't think Campbell & Gulden will be, nor do they need to be.

I personally was really looking forward to seeing what I was extremely confident was going to be a Rowell/Anderson-esque barrage over the draft pool from Phillips this year. His numbers as an under-ager were already favourable compared to those two, and I thought he had another level to go to as he'd only get stronger and start dominating games out of the shadow of those two he played with last year. He got some niggles, and then the pandemic came along, so that showcase never eventuated for him. The two WA boys in particular have shot up the rankings in the Victorian boys' absence (both McDonald and DGB overtook Phillips in the Draft Central rankings - a month earlier Phillips was still #3)

While I've liked what I've seen from both of those two (Dubai Quacker has convinced me of DGB's value as a defender), neither strike me as a generational talent that will give us the best chance possible at capitalising from the highest live pick we've had in yonks. I only get that vibe from Hollands and Phillips tbh.

Just my view though, we all see players differently. :)

I'd say McInerney is already better then Polec.

I think Polec is a gun. Can be soft and inconsistent at times, but he's pretty good to watch when he's on.

In any case I wasn't even saying I'd be all for getting him, not sure if he fits our list profile, salary cap etc. Just think he's being under-rated but to each their own.
