They seem to be over the moon getting a couple of 2nd rounders

But the 3 1st rounders this year is big.
Noting also that the only academy player, who isn’t half bad at all, probably won’t be picked till late on the draft.

We need to nail these picks.
Yeah, those couple of second rounders makes it a pretty reasonable trade for them in the end. And they've got Jezza, so probably a win for them overall. But only if they win a flag while he's there.

Yes he is.

This is a bloody good draft hand we suddenly have ! And I know Hogan is iffy, but he seems committed to prove people wrong and if he does is a Jeremy Cameron replacement.

Partner him with HH, Finlayson and the other young fella (who's name escapes me) and that's a pretty damn good forward line

How many list spots do we have open and how many picks do we have? Thanks in advance. ;)

Feel like we are trading up, everybody keeps talking about picks going backwards due to all the academy bids but I look at it like we have a heap of picks worth good draft points that can be combined to get ahead of a lot of bids. Gotta be ahead of what others are doing, now we are on the other end of academy bids we can play it to our advantage.

I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t have a crack at Tom Phillips, he’s a good player and Hawthorn got him for nothing. Collingwood is apparently contributing to his contract. He would have been a nice mature player.

Kudos to Caruso and McCartney.

They were handed a tough set of cards with the Cameron, Williams and other exits.

They’ve parlayed those cards into a ‘good’ hand - opposed to ‘great’, which probably wasn’t achievable.

Sounds like we’ll trade up in the draft and get a top 10 gun (or two?).

However, season 2021 feels as though it hangs on the performance and durability of Preuss and Hogan.

Preuss should be good, Hogan could be anything (on a spectrum from ‘AFL trade of the year’ to a bust).

Salary cap pressure down, age profile lower.

Overall, call it a ‘result’.

I think that’s a fair assessment. I would have liked another backman or winger but if we get that from the draft I suppose I will be happy

The list is good enough... will the play style be?

Should be 5 spots, presuming the main list size is 38, and not higher with some funky stuff around the rookies.

38 - Shaw, Jacobs, Williams, Corr, Langdon, Cameron, Caldwell, Hately + Hogan, Preuss, Buckley (upgrade from B Cat rookie) = 33

5 Picks #s 10, 13, 15, 20 & 29.

TBH, as I've said previously, I don't actually think there's any value in trading earlier. I doubt we'd get into a position to grab 2 to 4, which is where we'd need to get McDonald, DGB or Phillips (well, maybe if we used 3 first rounders, but that really isn't value). I do think there's value in guys taken in that 10-20 region: no doubt some failures but we could easily snag someone who'll be fantastic value. But I can see us trying to get earlier - just don't blow it team.

Mind you, we should have just taken 40 for Hately, because it would have given us something else to offer in a trade, or if we did trade two firsts, that could be our last pick and it's likely to come in a few picks when Bulldogs and Crows pay for their NGA kids. There would be value in the mid 30s still.

The 2 second rounders going back makes it really the equivalent of 2 firsts, we bring the selection into this year which from a age profile thing suits our list
Similar to us grabbing Ash last year and then paying for Tom Green with this year's pick: essentially bringing forward the first rounder.

I strongly agree with this.

If Hogan comes good, the forward setup is fine even losing Jezza. Inside midfield is fine, but need some outside talent IMHO. Backline is the big question mark - even dropping Lachie back (which also weakens our midfield outside run). That's why Witherden (to keep Lachie as a winger) or Phillips (to replace Lachie on the wing) would IMHO been value plays. Phillips for a pick in the 60s and Witherden's trade value were abysmally low (still scratching my head over why the Lions did that - dlanod ?) and we should have tried to get in on that IMHO (sorry, I'm a broken record) but they may not have wanted to come.

There can be some talent in the draft who can come in and make an impact for us in first grade.

Game style will be the biggest factor though as to how season 2021 goes, though.

still scratching my head over why the Lions did that - @dlanod ?
Substantial contract, not expected to push for senior selection on his own merits, dropping cap and list sizes. Basically acknowledging their mistake of overpaying him before it gets to a Collingwood stage.

Fair enough. What do you reckon he was on? I figured we didn't go for Phillips because of the $ on his contract (although with only one year left we could have effectively amortised that over subsequent years), so maybe Witherden was similar ... and maybe like the Lions we just didn't rate him.

So, really the AFL should just make trade period about 48 or 72 hours long, continuous/no breaks. Because so many deals just get jammed into those final 4 hours anyway!

So much this. Media and money clickbait driven. You could do it all in 2 days.

Thanks for the fair deal with Jeremy and good lack with your draft period i think you will do very well.

I said that the two clubs would make a deal in the end.

AFL House should really pay both our clubs royalties for all the clickbait the drama would have drawn in over the past week or so.
