I'd love to see our young guns Brayshaw and Cerra step up in the midfield and get some games into Valente and Serong. Play Sturt HF and let him get a feel for the game. Young needs to debut round 1.

Sounds good to me.

Wasn't Valente captain of a good SA team before we drafted him?

Yes he was. A number of the recent interstate recruits have leadership credentials. I assume it is deliberate, or a positive when considering the Draft options.

I really liked the sound of Valente in his draft year, and expected him to go earlier, but perhaps his lack of pace and his injury effected that. But he is a big boy, a ball winner, a smart footballer, and has good disposal on both sides. He has taken the time off due to injury to build himself into an impressive option for 2020.

Was captain of a stacked SA team (likes of Rankine, Rozee, Lukosius, Hately) as they won the champs.

Luke Valente: Captain of SA, Vice Captain All Australian.

Hayden Young: Captain of Dandenong, Vice Captain Vic Country.

Caleb Serong: Captain of Geelong Grammar, Co Captain of Vic Country.

Young looked totally cooked after that session, very very hot out there and he ran a bunch of laps. I think i heard him tell the guys on the boundary that he'd be back with everyone else on Friday and that around half the group would be gone on a community thing. The overall intensity of the session was actually pretty high for a Wednesday and especially with the heat.

As ever with Wednesday seshes there were a bunch of guys not on the track including walters, tabs, mundy, meek, switta, wilson, hill and others in the gym.

The drill that Jlo was running was about how players are expected to tackle the opposition ball carrier, he was very big on highlighting how if tacklers simply runs at the ball carrier straight on that the ball carrier has the easy option of going either side of the tackler, and the tackler should instead come in at an angle which takes away the corridor option and forces him to the boundary or get tackled in the attempt. He also didn't like it when people would run in on their angle but then stop and hesitate in front of the ball carrier and do that crab shuffle, just want's them to back their line in and go for it. So if someone gets unexpectedly dropped during the season maybe they weren't doing this right because he was stressing the hell out of it lol. McManus was also in this drill offering encouraging words.

I noticed Belly running out onto the oval after the drill to say something to Jlo then straight back onto the mobile while he walked off, hope it wasn't bad news or anything.

The contested marking drills are usually pretty hotly contested, but the ones involving Fyfe were not, just manhandled everybody and marked everything. He was mostly on smaller guys like Duman, Banfield and Watson and the like but it was still impressive. Serong was probably the best i'd seen him so far, besides the really strong tackle on Fyfe he was also strong at breaking through tackles and getting his hands free to pass off in the stoppage drills, and took a strong mark on a defender in the mini match sim they were doing inside 50. So pretty much as billed from his draft tapes and in general looked a bit more confident than I had seen him previously within drills.

Probably telling him what that Hagdorn parasite has been saying about Hogan...

PB: JL - just got Dominos on the phone here - meat lovers or hawaiian?

JL: C'mon Belly, can't we afford something a bit better?

PB: Nope we're still paying Ross you know.

JL: Fine, I'll take a thin crust vegetarian... and a diet coke...

PB: yep, it'll be ready after training.

Disappointing with Dixon. Needs a massive pre season and can be fit for the start of the season. Hogan out means he can push for selection. But needs to take that big step forward in terms of tank and desire.

Very pleasant morning sitting in the shade watching others run around in the sun. Nice to meet Dockernut and have a chat with Inveigh Slang.

Most of it has been covered already, but I'll add my observations.

Early on Hayden Young and Liam Henry were having a casual kick to kick form about 40 metres apart and it was like watching two soldiers trading shots - the passes were beautiful, flat and rarely missed their target. Seeing them hit each other up on the lead was a thing of beauty and bodes well for the future. They are both quite slight, so would not expect more than a token appearance this year, but these kids are long-term blue chip investments.

They did some contested marking drills between the defenders and the attackers, and it was quite an eye opener. Some of the things I noticed:
  • Nobody can hold a candle to Nathan Fyfe in a one on one marking contest. He is just so strong in the core and reads the ball so well - if he spends more time forward this year he will kick a lot of goals.
  • Joel Hamling is an exceptional defender. We all know this, but the way he out bodied and out positioned all and sundry (except Fyfe) was a thing of beauty.
  • Sam Sturt is very clever and very elusive, but not yet strong enough in the body in a one on one marking contest. When he gets away from his man he is great, so it will be a case of whether he can get the delivery he needs. If he does, he will kick goals.
  • Hugh Dixon is still not strong enough under the ball. He is highly skilled, but gets moved off the ball too easily for a bloke of his size.
  • Griffin Logue is a beast and he loves the physical stuff. Could be in for a big year I think.
The drill that ChimpaWompa mentioned was interesting to watch. Initially it seemed to be a bit tame, but as it went on things got a bit willing and there were some really hard hits. Poor Tom North was seeing stars after being slammed to the ground and hitting his head. The trainer took a look but he seemed OK. As metioned, Minario Fredericks and Adam Cerra had a little bit of a battle going on - first Fredericks absolutely nailed Cerra in a tackle which drew applause from the spectators, then Cerra returned the favour with interest shortly after. It was all done in a good spirit and it's great to see the young guys bonding and getting competitive with each other.

I don't expect to see miracles this year, as it will definitely take time for the team to gel and get used to a new game plan, but the signs for the future are really bright. We have a great bunch of young guys coming through, and we have some really good mature leaders to help them on the journey.

Cesoir, do you think with Sturt he can still be effective even if he is not quite ready for the body on body stuff, or is it a waiting game for us?

I wonder if Longmuir looks at him and thinks ‘Jayden Stephenson’ and what he provided for Collingwood. Not a heap of body on body happening there, just speed and skill.

Yeah, really hard to say - we are so used to watching Lyon who was reluctant to expose "small" kids to AFL. My best guess base don what I have seen at training is that he is definitely a chance for a shot at the small - medium forward role. Maybe not round 1 but he has said he'd like to add another 3kg before the season starts, if he does that who knows?

I reckon a lot will depend on the preseason games. If he performs like he did in the last match sim he will pretty much pick himself.

Like I have said, watching Peel will be a real blast this year!

Unless there are legitimate concerns about his welfare, and that could well be the case after his concussions last season, I'm all for throwing him into the heat of battle. We've seen lightly framed but highly skilled players like Stephenson and Rozee tear teams apart by using their elite skills and the unbridled enthusiasm of youth, why not Sam?
