Play Nice 2020 Pre-Season Training

Surely you the intent should be to train effort and skills and simulate games. I played cricket at a reasonable level and to do the above you would get smashed physically then practice skills whilst fatigued. I would think the same approach could work well in footy....but maybe I'm too old school for the sport scientists.

Anytime you've got a footy in your hands you can practice your skills. It's really just a mindset thing.

At AFL level I would've thought skill improvement requirements would vary substantially from individual to individual, so therefore tailored practice outside of group sessions would be the way to maximise any potential improvement.

Furthermore the younger the group the more skill execution becomes subject to variables within a game i.e. pressure, occasion, prior errors, etc.

Still rehabbing from the shoulder op I think. I recall Bell saying he will be back running soon but no contact training until after Christmas...

I wasn't expecting him to "train", just jog a lap or two with the whippersnappers and do a bit of small talk with them. Then adjourn to the sidelines and play with his phone, looking up new furnishings for his house.

Wasn’t he going overseas to South America etc. I don’t follow him on social media but fair chance he hasn’t come back yet. I think the best thing for Fyfe is to mentally unwind. No need for him jogging laps at Cockburn.

The phrase that we were trying to improve our ball movement was thrown out last year. Saying we’re trying to improve our skills is nothing but saying to the fans and media what they want to hear really.

They've been doing an impressive job in marketing this off season. May or may not translate into anything meaningful on field but they are definitely intune with buzzwords the fans like to hear.

I do wonder how losing Langdon will change the way the team appears to play. I'm sure our team will benefit from standing around in position after an inside fifty for half a minute while the forward takes a set shot slightly more often than previous where they would be turning and running back to defend.

I don't think we will replace his run so we might not get a man to a loose ball as often, or create a contest there but watching his ball use in the Geelong game... he didn't hit a target all night.

A mark instead would totally change our ball movement.

i'm oddly confident about Aish replacing him for some reason, 15 Aish disposals is worth 25 of Ed's given how well he finds targets.

interestingly enough, turns out Aish and Ed are good mates haha. Ed has commented on a few of Aish's insta posts and i thought Ed didn't use insta

Realistically we have no idea what position James Aish is playing yet. He could be staying at half back for all we know.

On the subject of new players I’m a touch disappointed that Blake Acres didn’t rock up for day one of pre season. Maybe I’m being harsh - I’ll let others decide.

He may of had a trip booked somewhere. We don’t know. I wouldn’t read much into it though

Yep being harsh. Just because players aren't at the club doesn't mean they aren't still working hard wherever they are. The annual criticisms of Fyfe are ridiculous... he carries this team... I think he deserves and needs some time off after each season (he's also recovering from yet another surgery). I'm sure he's still in contact with the club and doing everything he needs to do to prepare for the season ahead. If they rock up to pre-season looking chubby then serve away... Praise the guys that come in earlier than they need to sure but don't have a go at others who don't - they are entitled to some time off. For many it'd be important for their mental state.

I think he’ll be back next week, a week before he’s due back.

Yes it is harsh and why Acres and not Aish when both of them were settled over in Melbourne. I don’t get it personally. The players that have been in the system 5 plus years aren’t due back for another 2 weeks. I would expect without any pressure either way for trickling of these players to start showing up at training over the next week.

When Acres was interviewed after the trade he said he planned on coming to training a little earlier.

I'm thrilled Langdon has gone. With respect, he looked like a great guy and gave a lot of effort, and did a lot of good things running wise. His disposal however was horrendous. No position hurts a team worse for turnovers than on the wing. So often he caught our whole team offside, after he'd win the ball, run it forward, then give it straight back to the opposition allowing an easy turnover that we couldn't defend.

Our team will improve a great deal with Langdon not there to turn the ball over.

Skills beat speed anyday

Why Acres and not Aish?

Aish has just played in a Prelim and was an established player in good side. Acres was a fringe player at the ****est club in the league. I think you should be able to see the difference.

I’m being harsh for sure especially given I don’t know what Acres is doing atm. For all I know he could be working just as hard as those at training somewhere else but who knows.

Probably could have used some weekly skills training.

Conundrum
Athlete can run jump evade but doubtful kick.
Footy player who can kick ,handball but is slow as a snail, wouldn't run out of sight in a week and can't jump over a jam tin.
Surely if you're not athletic all the skills in the world won't make you a footy player.
Imo all who play at the highest level are high grade athletes

I think you’re being a little facetious. People need to be athletic at the highest level but my point is stop drafting blokes who are athletes first ie can run and jump amazingly but can’t execute the basic skills. The old key forwards for example who surprise surprise could actually execute a drop punt with a set routine. Or the likes of Simon black, Sam Mitchell etc. guys who were footy players first. Langdon was our classic example of a guy who could run amazingly but what’s the point if he can’t consistently execute the most fundamental and basic skill in our game? A drop punt!

I dream of the time AFL players can use their opposite foot!

maybe you’re in the Ross Lyon mould that effort is the most important. I’m opposite, if you can move the ball through efficient skill you won’t need so much effort.

Same with the essendon game - his first 10 kicks were clangers. He didn't hit a target all night. He literally would have been better off closing his eyes and kicking the ball in the air.

The most critical kick in foot ball at the moment is the kick into the forward line. Ed was almost the worst in the competition being slightly shaded by a 2nd year player who played an inside role.

Very happy he is gone, i would have traded him for a bag of chips.
