Training 2020 Preseason

Looks like an organised effort by the boys to get started early. Less guys training on their own and more of them doing group stuff together whih is great, they will push each other.

Would be a later start due to finals, but a few of the guys jumped right back in. Just get a head start with conditioning.

When is the official start to preseason training?

Great to see some of the lads back early. I do hope there's no complacency in the group after the success of this year.

Agree wholeheartedly that a good early start for linc and the big O will be of great benefit next season. Expect to see a better year for both. Hoping withers and rayner have a big preseason too. They need it.

Huge respect for matho. Every year he has come back early and put in lots of extra work to improve himself in what ever way he can. From doing heaps of extra running with endurance gun n robbo, to breathing in every ounce of knowledge he could garner from d beams when he was here. Not the only one i know but whatever anyone thinks of him as a player, you have to respect his commitment and desire to improve. I hope he really makes it tough for cey to get in the team. Great competition there.

Also hoping mitch robbos young ones are there again running water, yelling encouragement. I remember those pics from last year, the young fella with the group and his daughter climbing the fence high fiving hippy etc as they ran laps. Im sorry i cant remember their names. Culturally heartwarming.

Well said. :thumbsu:

I don't rate CEY at all, I mean how can you, 39 games across 8 years is very unimpressive and given Mathieson's commitment / dedication to the club and its cause etc., I'd hope he is given first crack if in fact they are competing for the same spot.

Good thing about next season is that we are unlikely to gift games in the name of development, best 22 should play every week. I’ve got CEY just shading Matho at the moment due to his size and the need we have for a player of his type. Should be an interesting off season.

I'm a big matho fan, love the mongrel in his game. I reckon he is one of those guys who now has all the pieces of the puzzle but just hadn't put them together on a consistent basis. If he can manage to do that he should be able to secure an ongoing productive spot in the senior side

I probably haven't seen enough of cey to be definitive, but my impression is he's a higher floor / lower ceiling player than matho due to his combination of huge body but limited pace. Good to have both options though!

The biggest thing I don't enjoy about Beast's game is that he's very quick to throw the ball on the boot and hope it lands somewhere good, instead of lowering the eyes first and checking for a possible better option. It's when you get one of those kicks that doesn't clear the area that can turn a scrap into a quick turnover.

But I do ever so much love how easily he gets under the skin of the opposition, both players and supporters.

I am a fan of CEY. He is exactly what we need being a big bodied midfielder, nearly unstoppable when he gets going. He said he is injury free and ready for a big preseason. He didn't play after the bye in 2019. He had a shin related leg injury that the Adelaide medical staff (all recently sacked) could not get right. luckily for Cam it was not his ACL. I am confident our medical team will get his body right for 2020.

Dylan 12 you are correct in that he has only played 39 games in his career. But you did not mention 25 of those were in 2018 & 2019.

And was playing pretty damn well this year before he went out with the injury.

Not a Matho fan myself. Lacks endurance and composure. Prone to put ball to foot quickly without looking up. Lacks polished skills. Can’t really seem him coming on and cementing a best 22 spot long term.

Also very reliable in front of goal.

Fair. I reckon the ability is there, but he just sometimes doesn't take the time to think. I'm a big believer that people can mature and grow into that poise, whether in athletics or life, so I reckon he has it in him to move beyond those issues with his game and grow into a consistent plus. Still, a lot of players don't make that jump so he may not but I've got my fingers crossed

I really like how the club have brought/are bringing the playing group together. The older guys with runs on the board in proven ability to impact only drives the younger guys to get the best out of themselves, plus the added big game experience and maturity of birchall, it's just a really clearly good balance.

Noone expects or could expect anyone to get away with anything less than 100% this preseason and the bar is above everyone, even our greatest talent Lachie Neale, who with the added coverage of a bigger badder Matho or fitter steadier CEY will be cuttin ribbons through whoevs

Yep anyone who attempts to terrorise Lachie will find themselves terrorised by CEY or God help them Ely Smith Want-Some.gif buttkick.gif

I love Matho's commitment to training and improving himself and the bit of mongrel that he brings when he plays.

I just think he doesn't have the ability to be a permanent fixture. But he'll be as good as he can be and that should have him at the worst at least pressing other guys for a spot or filling in when injuries strike.

Like all the younger players, there is room for improvement and Matho certainly has plenty to improve before he gets to be a regular best 22 player. That being said, he has the ability to get there and I am sure he will try his utmost to improve in the areas he needs to improve & give it everything he has to become a regular in the Senior side. I for one would enjoy that.

An article on CEY dated 15th Jan 2018 for anyone interested. How unlucky and shattered he must have felt at the time.
One sentence from the article might jog some peoples memories. This was his second ACL injury.

"The next day I slipped over in the recovery and that’s when I ruptured my ACL."

He was looking forward to a good 2018 only to attend the much discussed "Gold Coast Training Camp"

As the quality of our list keeps improving, less skilful guys like Matho will slip further down the pecking order, as was the case with Lewy. I doubt Matho will be on the list in two years time.

Agree 100%, the only thing that keeps him on the list in 2021 is that he’s contracted. Personally I think that will be he last year with us unless traded before then.

Darwinist.

you dont keep shit on a list for 8 years with only a handful of games. Has potential. Does the club need to prove themselves anymore with the last few years recruitment?

I can see him as another Robbo in 5 or 6 yrs time.

Funny how a few of the critics of CEY were also the ones so viciously critical of us trading for Charlie Cameron.

Sure, I admire the self-confidence to keep expressing incorrect views in such absolute terms year after year. It takes a special kind of “fan” to keep bagging club decisions and ultimately being proven wrong on almost every occasion.

Does the club need to prove themselves anymore with the last few years recruitment?
Not in my eyes they don't, particularly at the draft table where they have been exemplary. Not sure why you'd ask whether the club needs to prove themselves anymore though. Has the club been questioned recently? I doubt anyone could question some of the club's recent acquisition in Cameron, Martin, Neale, Lyons, Robinson and Hodge (the latter two being inspired decisions). Sure I don't rate CEY at all despite knowing a lot more about him, unlike Lincoln McCarthy, who I actually knew very little about. Did I agree with the recruitment of Adams? No, because I thought we had plenty of KPD's and Walker was the better defender. Still do, but I don't care enough to go on about it.

As for trading, you couldn't really fault the club at all since the 2009 debacle, although Raines and Staker were serviceable and the 2015 trade period with Bell and Jansen being flops, Walker being good in my eyes and Bastinac costing us too much (pick 17 IIRC) with the former three costing us bugger all.

Overall though, the club has done a really good job in not overpaying for players it wants, with the exception of Beams (although we only have the benefit of hindsight in terms of how that played out, which we were fairly compensated). On Cameron, yes I thought we should only have given pick 18 at the time, but of course, given his output, you'd give up pick 12 every day of the week.

As for CEY, despite not trading for him, I agree he is a pretty low risk pick up given he only costs us a list spot. Personally, I'd have rathered we kept Cutler / Taylor on the list. At worst he'll contribute as much as Jansen did and at best, he'll do more than what Brent Moloney did, particularly in his first season (2013).

Still your question on the back of me not rating CEY at all is quite odd.
