none of you blokes seem terribly disappointed to lose him - what the story with this guy?

Didnt really go beyond his original output and has fallen behind players he should be comfortably ahead of. A fresh start would fix that.

A pick in the 60s AND we pay his wage though? Thats just stupid.

Definitely feels like that. We had the opportunity to keep Witho and Stef, but letting them go means a good chunk of cap is now free. It'll be an interesting few days to see how things play out.
Would a fair salary guesstimate for Stef ($500k) and Witho ($400k) be around $900k?

Not quite. Witho was on around 450-500k from my understanding and Stef would have been on a lot less in 2021 - likely 300k or something there abouts is my guess - so at least 750-800k. Obviously that's just a guess but regardless would have cash there- although given we're paying part of Withos salary for him to move you'd hope it's for a reason.

Gotta say there must be more too this witho isn’t as bad as many are saying , the kid gets his hands on the ball a lot and is well loved by the team , he seems to love the lions. Pick 60 ! Bugger off if true that’s insane , got to be way more or a dam good reason

birch is almost done and we flog off a replacement ? Better be a very very good plan Nobes

Will be interested to see how this plays out because what has been reported just doesn't make sense - especially given that Witho is a contracted player.

Looked a future star early but hasn’t really shown that he is going to improve the key flaws in his game. Slow runner, slow to react, struggles to win the hard ball when the situation requires it, lacks the athleticism, work rate and mongrel to be a highly accountable defender.

He is a pretty silky ball user (but even this is slightly overrated due to his slow decision making at times, and he doesn’t really spear the ball).

If you can manufacture a role that maximises his strengths and minimises his weaknesses you might get a good return from him, but he is heavily overrated here by some here. I think a lot of the reluctance is some vestigial fear remaining from our Go Home 5 days when we were desperate to hold on to any player with a modicum of ability.

If that report is anywhere near the mark then it means that the powers that be, do not really see a future for Alex at the club. Which Is unfortunate considering the way he begun his career.
Quite a fall from Grace from the GWS final last year.
He looked a little underdone in Round 1 and then upon the re-start of the season found himself out of the team until Round 9. Stayed in the team until the bye with mixed results and didn’t get back in the team after that.
He played last year with Hodge in the team but couldn’t get a solid gig with Birch in this year.
Probably more likely that it was someone like Starc or AhChee keeping him out this year. Young guys who the Coaches believe offer more for the team.

I’ll be disappointed to lose him for nothing so a pick in 60s and us paying some of his salary doesn’t make much sense . Also with K Coleman , and Blake Coleman to come in not sure a trade including Jarrod Cameron would even be on the cards and eagles beer a small forward . 2nd round future which let’s be honest is a pick around 35-40 for eagles doesn’t make me too keen either .

Not very resilient of him to have one year out of the 22 after three in it and to call it quits lol
If you love your club and team-mates you'd put your head down for longer imo. Injuries could easily have him back in, look at Birch who literally pinged a hammy doing a kick out. Such short-term thinking.

Frustrating.

I wouldn't be blaming Witho. No chance he leaves unless the club isn't really keen on keeping him.

Poor comment about a young man when you dont know the circumstances. Alex wants to stay. The club simply don't consider him part of their future plans.

If the lions are paying for some of his salery and only accepting pick 60, it means the club pushed him out of the door. Poor form and if he becomes a great player at least we know who to blame. Fagan and Noble. I'm not a fan of this at all, and that's all there is to it.

We are rotating team members off our list who have value but have either gone back or unable to break into 22. If Witherden becomes a great player good on him, but if moving him on frees up enough cap to top up McCluggage, Starc, Bailey - I'd rather do that based on 2020 output.

You can't win all these scenarios, have to make the best decision with available data which is what Fages/Noble would be doing.

Can't help but feel this is a money-ball situation where we have enormous depth in Witho's position, but are paying a GH5 legacy premium given what he showed early days. How he is perceived (and valued) externally may also be a driving force to a potential trade.

I agree with your analysis of his weaknesses, however there is still much improvement left in Alex's game given his age. He showed plenty in the matches he played this year and it's probably an overstatement to suggest a role would need to be specifically created to carry those weaknesses.

I can understand your comments given some on this forum rate him as the 'second coming', but your assessment is a little harsh and indicative of some early-onset detachment.

Given the operators we have at the club, I am confident we will manage this situation appropriately and Alex will leave on good terms. The club will show the rest of the group (which are undoubtedly close with Alex) that they are prepared to work with players to achieve the best outcome for all involved.

I have no doubt Alex will have forge a great career and wish him all the best at his future club.

It does seem a bit odd. I think people hoping it means we are bringing someone else in will be disappointed though.

Haven’t heard anymore about the 18/19 for pick 8 over the weekend so maybe that fell through and we simply need the extra spot to use both picks at the draft?

He does seem very well liked around the club, so I hope internally we’ve handled it well and hasn’t put any others offside.
