I wonder how much interest Witho has attracted. Surely not much from back home, you would think.

I can understand your comments given some on this forum rate him as the 'second coming', but your assessment is a little harsh and indicative of some early-onset detachment.

Except it's the same thing I've been saying for a while, before there was any real indication Witherden might have been on the move.

The noise around Witherden has been loud since the middle of the year as he struggled to maintain a regular spot in the team.

I remember this comment and retract my earlier statement, I think you've had time to emotionally prepare for his departure for a number of months now.

For the record, I would be inclined to keep him as a long-term replacement for Birchall and Rich (if his salary was more aligned with his output and value to the team). However, the commentary on his disposal has been overstated as he does have a tendency to give the pill a bit of air time. Perhaps we are judging him too harshly as the successor to Rich when in reality there's only one Daniel Rich

Witherden being traded has been reported separately by two different reporters out of WA.

I do agree that we are overeacting to the Pick 60 and Bris pays some salary tweet.

The round 9 game v Essendon (2 Brownlow votes) was his best game in 2/3 years. It stands out like a beacon which says as much as anything about why the club don't see him as part of their future. Just hasn't done enough often enough to warrant his salary and because his contract has two years to run the only option is a trade.

We are rotating team members off our list who have value but have either gone back or unable to break into 22. If Witherden becomes a great player good on him, but if moving him on frees up enough cap to top up McCluggage, Starc, Bailey - I'd rather do that based on 2020 output.

You can't win all these scenarios, have to make the best decision with available data which is what Fages/Noble would be doing.

Got nothing to do with freeing up cap space to top up McCluggage, Starc, Bailey. He is simply not considered part of the future plans of the 22.

Agree, i feel as though it will happen based on some of the comments from mighty lions and such, will wait and see how it all plays out now as Witherden is a respected player.

If the lions are paying for some of his salery and only accepting pick 60, it means the club pushed him out of the door. Poor form and if he becomes a great player at least we know who to blame. Fagan and Noble. I'm not a fan of this at all, and that's all there is to it.

You are a joke. You are blaming Noble and Fagan? Yep they have both totally screwed our club...

Without Noble and Fages, we probably wouldn’t have Cameron or Neale on our list. You are acting as if we are trading Clugga or Berry.

Witho is not in our best 22 anymore. Sure he has potential and may turn out to be a solid player at the level, but stop acting like Henny Penny thinking the sky is falling down.

There are only blue skies in Brisbane at the moment.

I'm excited about this tbh. All 3 are athletic upgrades over the current 3 we have. Just young and inexperienced.

you have to have faith in Noble and Fagan now with Witho

Last year we moved on much loved players Walker, Keays, Basti and Nick Robbo.
We found new homes for Cutler and Squizzy.
Walker and Keays got roles elsewhere and played most games although where backups like Witho seems to be now

Everyone saying Birchall keeping Witho out.. We brought Birchall in for a reason.
Also no one saying Birchall/Witho keeping Prior, B Smith, Answerth and Hinge out.
You assume they looked at list and worked out Witho staying or leaving.
No idea $ no idea if Salary dump or whatever.
At the moment he is not best 22 as shown by who is picked.

if he on $900k and pies pay $100k.. Still be on Daniher $$. I not have him higher then a few players on our list.

I think if witherden goes hinge and prior will have more of a chance.
answerth and starcs are great also.
So not really surprised if witho decided to move but I’d like to get more than a pick 60, his only downfall is his speed and and takes too long to make a decision.
Still don’t see anything happening yet. But we will wait and see.

Don't really know anything about Prior, do you know his strengths?

Personally I'd prefer Witho to stay and see how much he can work on his deficiencies. But at the end of the day the back 7 will be gardner/andrews/payne(lester)?) as bigs, rich/birchell/Ah chee/starc. Answerth needs to be in there also. So really you are paying Witho best 22 money for someone that will only get a game when we have maybe 2 injuries. And yes Starc will play more midfield going forward, but he was playing so well on half back in the second half of the season I would be reluctant to move him away from there too much. So it comes down to $, where is that money best spent.

Not very resilient of him to have one year out of the 22 after three in it and to call it quits lol
If you love your club and team-mates you'd put your head down for longer imo. Injuries could easily have him back in, look at Birch who literally pinged a hammy doing a kick out. Such short-term thinking.

Witherden doesn't have enough strings to his bow to command best 22 salary and hence we must move him on to ensure we can pay enough to keep those that are (McCluggage, Starc etc.). The club no doubt believes Hinge & Prior are able to play Witherden's role once Birchall retires - despite being on significantly less money. Smart list management I would say - it might not be anything other than that (no falling outs, or attitude problems - just business).

We did likewise with Cutler (wing - replaced by McCluggage) last year and the sky didn't fall in (nor did he set the world on fire at the Bombers). Should Collingwood have paid solid money to keep Witts (since a captain and a best and fairest) in case Grundy went down even though he wasn't playing? Admittedly their list management is in crisis now, but the point is clear. Not all players can be retained - Gram and Bolton from our glory days were great players for their second clubs but were behind others. We still did okay out of retaining others around them.

Ah Chee (intercept marking), Starc (pace, endurance) and Birchall (superior decision-making) all offer more than Witherden currently. I get that we all have our favourites (I still haven't recovered from Aker and Brennan leaving), but it's the reality of professional support.
