Interesting that the club mentions that we will redraft Birchall, Mathieson and Ballenden in the rookie draft, when we can easily place two of them on the rookie list without going to the rookie draft, as per the AFL release yesterday.

So our Cat A rookies are: Grant Birchall, Connor Ballenden and Rhys Mathieson right?

Who are are Cat B other than Uosis?

Do we have 2 free primary list spots and 2 Cat B spots now?
And Archie Smith as Cat A.

Madden as Cat B.

I believe we’re allowed:
38 Senior List.
4 Cat A Rookies.
2 Cat B Rookies.

So looks like our rookie spots are all filled.
Thanks, I thought it was 3 of A/B but that makes sense.

So Smith, Birch, Matho and Ballenden Cat A and Uosis and Madden Cat B.

I might've gotten this completely wrong but don't we have more than 2 primary lists spots available then?

Christensen, Wooller, Allison (R), Skinner (R), Eagles (R), C. Lyons (R), Martin, Witherden, Cox, Hinge = 10 players

Uosis, Daniher, Cockatoo = 3 players

We had 47 on the list last year 47-10+3 = 40 so 4 free spots

I must've missed something otherwise

In one sweep, we have gotten rid of 3 young running defenders, while our existing ones are on their last 1-2 years. (Rich, Birchall, Lester etc;)

We must really rate our depth and who we can bring in through the draft.
We still have Ah Chee, Starcevich, Answerth and Jaxon Prior to play those roles.

Along with the suggestion that the club might look at playing Cockatoo there as well.

And the club has been teaching James Madden to play there as well.

I believe we’re covered there for the short term.

Not to mention both Coleman boys can play as running hbf’ers.

Then we have two picks in the first round of next year’s draft, which is rather strong and deep for mids and flankers.

I’m waiting for smarter minds than me to update us on our current available list spots.

So Lester gets re-signed and we take two picks it seems.
Do Birchall, Mathieson and Ballenden go straight to our rookie list? Or do they need to go through the rookie draft to get them? If they go into the rookie draft does that mean other clubs can select them?

We have more available primary list spots, as the list stickied to the top of this thread is assuming we are retaining cox and Hinge. So with them gone, that is 36 on primary list, take 3 off to go into rookie draft and add Fullarton as an upgrade and we have 34 on primary list, 4 on Cat A, 2 on Cat B.

So I think you are correct, though there is no requirement that we actually take in a full list of 44.

I'm sure we will though, but picking up 4 players with the draft hand we have is a lot. Like what are we actually going to get with this: 25, 53, 58, 63, 68, 69

We'll be praying a bid for Coleman comes after 25.

I know he had a good year, but wonder where the 2 year signing of Lester, leaves some of the young guys. I could be wrong, but I reckon Lester kept Gardner from taking third tall, and therefore kept Payne out. If I was Payne's manager I would be telling him to throw everything at it in 2021 and if they pick Lester or Adams in front of him, seek a release at the end of 2021.
Perhaps Lester and or Birchall prevented Hinge from getting a few games. Not sure if Hinge got a decent crack, I still remember how ordinary Harris and particularly Gardner were in their first 50 or so games (although midfield was getting smashed). Guys need more than a few games to show potential.

I hope removing Birchall from the senior list maybe gives some hope to some of the young backs (depth) that they may get some games. An improved reserves comp will help with development but nothing like a few games at AFL level.

So arguably Ballenden and Matho on notice

What it does confirm is that Birchall, Ballenden and Beastmode are the one's most likely in the sights next year's end and we won't be bringing in any academy players (or anybody else) as rookies. Sorry that Hinge goes but the club knows best.

I'm really not convinced we will - I expect us that we will pick up at least 2, maybe 3 picks in addition to fullarton but it wouldn't shock me if we went with 43 or 42 in total list size given the 9% reduction in the salary cap. Even a little money save may help.

'Cedric Cox and Mitch Hinge have been delisted' as the very last line felt a bit flat and cold

4 total list spots available. This can be utilised as 2-4 senior list spots, with the rest being made up with rookies.

Given the line in the article regarding needing to manage the reduction in TPP, I would not be surprised if we took two players in the national draft, and have the remaining two spots utilised as rookie spots. Remembering that from a TPP perspective, the more rookies you have the better (given ~$80k/player is outside the cap).

I'm sorry to see Hinge delisted - I really liked the little I saw of him. I was also sorry to see Ben Keays, Lewy Taylor and Josh Walker leaving and Witho being traded but list management is a ruthless business - particularly in the current climate. It will be great if Mitch picks up a spot at the Crows and flourishes where there is more opportunity.

I think we have 4 spots on the primary but also waiting for others to confirm, because I could be very wrong.

Between two and four, with any remainder available for use as Cat A rookie slots.

Couldn't disagree more with this piece but I don't think it is poorly written or anything - it just drastically overrates Witherden and Stef Martin of this year:

Disagree...thoroughly well written piece only underlying what a few people think, including me.

Debacle of an off-season by pushing out Witherden and Martin and not doing anything to accommodate David Noble, the real brains behind the organisation, not to mention only bringing in two broken down players in Daniher and Cockatoo that have shown literally nothing for three years.

Hardly surprising the angst that some have with this piece because how dare anyone call anything into question at the club. You're seriously kidding yourself if you don't think culture at the club won't take a massive hit and key players look elsewhere in 12 months time.

All of the club's own doing though.

The only positive is the re-signing of Ryan Lester today.

LOL yeah we didn't do enough, only brought in one of the best KPF in the comp and an exciting midfielder who if both fit will take us to another level.
LOL, the same guys that have played what 17 games out of close to 140 games between them in the past 3 years.

Seriously, I can hardly contain my excitement.
