11. McG. Despite missing multiple chunks of time now he’s a mile in front of where he was last year. He didn’t seem to push quite as hard running yesterday but is moving freely. Is very fit. Lean and looking strong. He’s in for a really good year.
12. TDK. Is performing well in hit outs at training and I’m convinced he’s a long term ruck option. But it won’t be this year. Or probably even next. But hats the way of it for most ruckmen. He’s a lot more agile than Pittonet but he’s not agile enough to hold down a key forward spot. And he’s not fit or strong enough to hold down ruck yet. So I expect him to tease a bit but we will be relying on Harker to give us news of any progress from the VFL.
13. Stocker. Before Xmas I felt he was still a bit too big. Especially the last2 week’s he really seems to have dropped weight. I didn’t recognise him for a while yesterday. Kept thinking “who is that guy”. He is still a well below average endurance runner. BUT it has improved. He often doesn’t do the interval work with the main group which is interesting. I haven’t been able to work out whether that’s load Mgt or whether he’s on a different program. But yesterday he showed plenty. In the backline he’s very safe! One on one he’s terrific. He doesn’t fumble, makes smart decisions, keeps his feet, uses it well. I really like him in the backline. I think he will really pressure for that last spot. And be a more than adequate cover if he isn’t first team. Then yesterday he went on ball and 2-3 times won contests....including one against Cripps which was sensational. Side by side and went at it on even terms and Stocker won. So he’s def improved this year and we should be enthused by his future.
14. Great to see Liam get a completely free run at it. Hasn’t skipped a beat. Yesterday he did some endurance work at the end which the big guys have seemed to dodge so perhaps they think his cardio has dropped too far. I barely see Weiters do any running work now. All power and game play only for him.
15. LOVE THE DOC!!!! Can’t believe I didn’t bother with him yesterday in my training report. He was terrific. I feel like he held back a bit (maybe went 75 percent). He certainly avoided any silly contest situations. Which is good! Btw Simmo does too so I think it’s instruction to the mature guys. The Doc looks better than I’ve ever seen. Weirdly I don’t recall him kicking the ball SO well. Just punching 45m passes lace out....rinse repeat. Warmed my heart to see him organise the backline yesterday. Has been sadly missed. He’s ******* AA this year baby. Trust me.
16. Lang. I have to be fair to this guy. I usually give him no credit. No time. He has improved a LOT. Was obviosuly hampered last year. His skills and ball handling are great. BUT he’s a shit runner....Paddy dow beats him which says it all. I still don’t see a role for him. But good on him for working hard and he wouldn’t be the worst forward back up.
17. That’s Kemp I think? If it is- he’s in rehab. He’s bigger than Jack S (not a hope in hell is Jack 194). I’ll be happy to see him have a Doc year in rehab and make good progress athletically.
18. My son. Look I love him dearly. I actually genuinely wanted to hug him at the autograph session after training. Such a lovely young man. No one has ever tried harder than this kid. After a hard training session yesterday he almost beat Cottrell in the interval work. All on guys. Cottrell clearly the better runner (lighter). His kicking hasn’t more punch. Lower and harder. He was already standing up in tackles but that has gone up a level now. He’s a bit faster. A lot stronger. Seems confident in himself. Has half an hour when he gets the ball (remember early last year when he got caught a lot?). Now he actually HAPPILY gets tackled (a la Cripps) because he knows he will still get it off. His Houdini effort yesterday was something to behold. Running around in a circle inside multiple opponents then popping out the other side on his own. Will threaten for B+F and AA. 28 a game. 12 contested. 13 goals.

I think 4b2 loves you.
Just wood chipped everywhere.

Which of our mids will kick the most goals this year? Cripps - Setterfield - Walsh - Dow - Murphy - Fisher - ECurnow - SPS - Kennedy
I'm only using these guys as they're the ones that will likely be the ones used in the centre square.

I'm saying Walsh as what I'm seeing is someone that we know finds a lot of the ball, but also has that burst to seperate.
His kicking for goal has also been of a high standard this pre-season, to date.
I think Kennedy will struggle to get enough games else I would pick him. I see him as a half forward now.

I think Murph will split his time mid and half forward.

You don’t now see Cunners as a mid? He will spend time mid/forward.

I thought they’d push Cripps forward a lot but I’m not sure they will now.

SPS will be backline or nothing.

Ed doesn’t kick goals.

So for me- Walsh,Cunners or Murph. Probably Murph. Little freak

Not really and that's largely based on VFL form, from a couple of years ago.
It looks great when he takes possession, but he's not the player that will find the ball at will, whereas Cripps, Setterfield, Walsh, Murphy, ECurnow and Fisher do.

Cuningham is likely to be used at times, as will be the case for Martin and Stocker (when he plays) but the bulk of midfield duties still look likely to come from the aforementioned.

SPS backline or nothing? I don't think it's like that at all.
SPS creates and if you can do that, you can do it all over the field. Expecting a big year from him and even though he'll likely start back, he can just as easily be used as a mid or even go forward.

Don’t agree. He shows me little of the superb upside that McKAy has always flashed. McKay would murder him in a run. Of any description. And any previous version of McKay would do same.
But isn't he worth a go early if Charlie and Harry don't play?

You want a tall that will present and do everything to keep the ball in the zone? - TDK is your man.
Of course we shouldn't expect too much from a 20y.o. 203cm ruck/forward, but opportunity really can be a wonderful thing.

At this stage though, Kreuzer, Casboult and Mckay may well keep TDK out of a starting position, but should McKay not be ready and something happen to either Casboult or Kreuzer? Does Pittonet get first bite? I'm not sure, but I'd favour De Koning.

For me it’s Cripps if he can reproduce anything like his 4 goal second half against the lions last year i think he should kick the most. I’ve got Setterfield next in line just ahead of Walsh because of his canny knack of finding space in dangerous areas which should become more prevalent this season

Setterfield.

But isn't he worth a go early if Charlie and Harry don't play?

Maybe, but I doubt we'll go down that path in the season. We know Charlie will miss R1 and if Harry does too I dare say we'll probably see the more experienced duo of Casboult and McGovern as our key forward pairing.

I would though like to see us get a little more creative if Harry doesn't get up: play Kennedy as a deep forward.

It's fair to say 2020 is a massive year for Matt; he hasn't come on as hoped in the midfield and I am just about certain he won't make it as a full time mid.

I was though impressed with his work as a forward in the back half of 2019, and I think he could be an effective option for us given his size, strength overhead and ability to convert.

It was a small sample size, but outside our three talls, Kennedy is the only player on the list to average over a goal per game in 2019. Not sure we'll go down that path but I'd certainly be looking to see if he can carry that into 2020.

I like Kennedy, think he has plenty to offer in a few positions.

Have you seen McGovern recently? He's tiny. :)

Not to say one has to be a hulking 100 kgs and 195cm to be a key forward, but I'm surprised just how lean McGovern looks right now.
He's body-dwarfed by Kennedy and JSilvagni and doesn't even look to be the 191cm, he's listed at.

A certain other CFC supporters forum is so much worse than anything that appears on here

You haven't seen the rumour thread then. :)

I am not sure about "a few positions". At this stage I think it's forward or bust for Matt, though things can change quickly.

As much as we'd like it to happen I'm just not seeing a real future for him as a full time mid. He's a seriously big boy and that lends itself to being strong in the contest but doesn't have anything outside of that to make me stand up and take notice.

He's not particularly mobile. He doesn't have that great ability to free his arms in the tackle. He has no outside game. He's not quick by hand, foot or mind.

As a forward though he certainly does. He's excellent overhead for his size and he's a very good finisher in front of goal.

I'm fine with him seeing midfield time and think he could be effective in there in bursts, but he's not a starting mid for mine.

I have seen him and I remain a huge fan despite a very ordinary 2019 campaign.

Despite the loss of size I think he still has the strength and smarts to fill in as a key forward if and when required.

Going to be very interesting how they structure the forward line when Harry and Charlie are back, the only given is Eddie will be in a forward pocket.

levi mcgov and betts should make a great trio with all complimenting one another. Mcgov and betts to cause havoc and Levi for the big pack marks. If he can’t hang on then betts will finish it off.

And when 2 oppo’s man up on Levi then we go to mcgov or betts. Hate to be playing in defence against our side. Think we will start seeing 100 point scores more often.

I've got this as our best forward 6 heading into 2020:

HF: Cuningham - McKay - Martin
F: Betts - C Curnow - McGovern

Curnow's injury opens up a spot for Levi:

HF: Cuningham - McKay - Martin
F: Betts - Casboult - McGovern

If Harry misses as well I'd look at something like:

HF: Cuningham - Casboult - Martin
F: Betts - Kennedy - McGovern

A bit annoying how we have to constantly wait for Dow to come on.... I believe he will be a better player in 2020 but judging by posters on here he is still a year or 2 away....
Just curious, why was he so underdeveloped physically and aerobically coming into the AFL, esp as a pick 3? I believe he has the attributes to become an A grader at some pint but those are the two things holding him back.
