A team displaying agility, strength and marking ability on each line with some decent depth players in the 2's and a few old stagers to fast forward the development of the emerging talent.. Nb Cockatoo was hbf round 1 but fitness improved and moved to wing.

Our Guys-
BRISBANE LIONS

B:
Darcy Gardiner, Jack Payne, Grant Birchall

HB: Daniel Rich, Harris Andrews, Brandon Starcevich

C: Hugh McCluggage, Lachie Neale, Mitch Robinson

HF: Cam Rayner, Joe Daniher, Dayne Zorko

F: Charlie Cameron, Eric Hipwood, Daniel McStay

FOLL: Oscar McInerney, Jarryd Lyons, Jarrod Berry

I/C: Lincoln McCarthy, Zac Bailey, Nakia Cockatoo, Callum Ah Chee

In: Joe Daniher, Nakia Cockatoo

Out: Allen Christensen, Matt Eagles, Corey Lyons, Jacob Allison, Sam Skinner, Toby Wooller, Stefan Martin, Alex Witherden

We say: You didn’t see it because of the lack of NEAFL footy in 2020, but this is a deep, deep squad. The back six is particularly tough. We liked what we saw from young Jack Payne, but if Marcus Adams is fit - he’s had a horror run with injury while at the club - he might start. Then you’ve got guys like Noah Answerth, Callum Ah Chee, Ryan Lester and Kaidean Coleman all in the mix, so you can understand why they let Alex Witherden go. Joe Daniher definitely plays from Round 1 if fit and Nakia Cockatoo probably should, pushing preliminary final team member Cam Ellis-Yolmen out. Stef Martin left having been told the Lions were likely to play just one ruck next year, so Eric Hipwood and Daniher will assist Oscar McInerney.

Feel like we have to find a spot for Coleman. He really added something different to our side with his forward pressure and his kick into f50

Going to be hard to break into our team next year.
You would not want to turn up for preseason training in average shape.
Like everyone else Coleman just needs to improve
He is a good tackler but just needs to fix technique up a little so less frees against. Although he was unlucky at times.

I agree like to get Kiddy more games although from the above who do you leave out? Is it Mitch or Birchall for Cockatoo on the wing or HB.
Last year we played Birchall, Lester & Rich down back all not the quickest players going around but we did finish equal top end of H&A season
Rich had another great season so he is a lock for mine.
Lester had his best season since 2017 but can he repeat that form
Birchall had a solid season and added another year of on field coaching experience to our other young defenders.
Of the three Birchall may be the casualty. He turns 33 in January
Cockatoo possibly gets a go if they think he is fit enough. But would not surprise me if he debuts for us in round 5ish.
Mitch is the interesting one he had a fantastic 2019 but 2020 was up and down for him.
Played his best games against weaker opposition last year. Turns 32 next June. But he gives his all and coaches love that in a player
Kiddy will get more games but baring injuries will find it hard round 1.
We have a lot of players that can play multiple positions so if someone is dropped or injured a reshuffle is fairly easily done.

In regards to Coleman I wouldn’t be locking him into a forward position. Rich has maybe 2/3 years at best and I feel with Coleman’s kicking he could move back and fulfil that role.

I really do hope to see Payne make that position his next year. I’m not expecting big things but for him to find his feet and gradually improve.

As the year progresses I would like to see someone take Birchall’s spot. A few poster have said the same and it’s got nothing to do with him but more to do with the overall team developing so that he is overtaken.

Mitch Robinson is another that I would like to see be taken over. I love what he brings to the team and even if it was him being moved to the bench. Just want to see natural development within our younger squad as this is what will make us a better team.

I agree that we do have some depth to our squad which is beneficial but not to the extent that the article rates.

Would have been good to see how the ressies went during the year against the other AFL teams to gauge the depth. I think Lions risk losing some young talent if they are not played this year, so agree with Payne just has to be backed in, if we intend to keep him. Birchall not to keep a young promising player out and would like to see Mitch taken over at some point. Coleman has to be supported. It will be an interesting preseason.

The club has reasonable quality video of each reserves game played this year. I don't understand why they haven't shared it with their supporters. I guess its a product of the crazy year its been for everyone.

Birchall and Robbo should be pushed out of the side if we are to progress further. If we are still playing them deep into the season it means guys have not developed as we would have hoped.

I like the idea of having the likes of Rayner/McCarthy / Coleman rotating on and off the bench and just providing 100% harassment/ pressure and hard running. We should have plenty of depth and run games out well.

I'm not sold on 3 talls (Daniher, Hippy, Macca) in the starting 22 with the Big O also rotating down there at times. There is going to be strong competition right across the ground for spots in this 22 providing the boys all stay reasonably fit.

i not been sold with resting ruck as well. A few teams have the same line up. Makes us too tall if the ball hits the ground can leak quicker.
Martin/Big O vs Big O/Daniher. An upgrade in the forward line and Daniher pressure and ground ball is good.
If we go only 2 bigs in forward you assume Daniher gets one spot and be out of Hippy or McStay the second.
Seeing we did not seem to look to trade one of them out seems we going status quo.
Might make more balanced forward line 2 talls and guys who can mark overhead through mid/forward Charlie, Linc, Berry, Rayner and Cockatoo.
Then Zorko and Coleman pressure.
one extra mid rotation as well

I always thought playing 2 rucks and 2 key forwards was the preferred lineup because of our lack of speed meaning we need to kick to more contested situations.

We've been addressing our lack of speed and this might result in a new role for McStay or a shift to only 1 ruck and 2 key forwards.

If Lions go with just the one ruck in Big O i don't see him going forward much at all
Bench time for a rest and more dropping back down the line or in defense. I see his role changing next year.

McStay/Danhier takes the forward 50 ruck with Big O sitting behind play around the wing mark
This will make it difficult for teams kicking quickly out of defense
Only guessing of course.
He will have to get and maintain his TOG up around the 86% plus which he has been able to do without Martin
Could be less interchanges next year so one more mid and one ruck is the way to go.

Would be great if Dan had the endurance to run up and down the ground as required to play a wing role.
He is a great ball user when playing up the ground and can pin points leads inside 50.
Not real Great in contested situations though, but worth a thought as we still need to find our long term replacement for Robbo.

Bit left field - after watching Jarrod Brander on wing (same height, 5kg lighter) I'm tempted for us to try Jack Payne in that role. Payne's got good agility, good pace off the mark and can take a contested grab. If he can play wing, we'll get max flexibility as he can always switch back to defensive 50 and help if needed.

Payne has a lot more to offer in my view than just play key defense. This might help us fit Adams in too if he's available next season.

What I have seen of Payne's kicking means that he shouldn't be anywhere near the wing.

Sorry I don't understand this at all. Because Brander is a gun wing?

He also isnt that quick off the mark. In my opinion, Payne's only position is down back against one of the tall key forwards. I think he will be awesome down there longer term.

Beg to differ, he took off a couple of times even in prelim final and I remember seeing him running away from Rohan. I rate his pace off mark. Disposal could have some questions but we can only try and see how he goes.

Trying to fit both Payne and Adams on the same side in 2021. I don't see Adams anywhere but down back. Hence exploring the idea if Payne can play other positions.

Maybe Payne can focus on being an ok defender before we play him forward or on the wing

If Adams returns next year and Payne gets pushed out again, that'll be his final year of current contract and he is likely to start looking around.

Would much prefer Adams to be looking around at the end of next year.

Yeah, we can go back to the discussion about moving our AA defender and general forward instead. :D
