HF - Billings , King , Butler

If we get Higgins, I have no idea how we pick a 22. A couple of very stiff players will be playing reserves if everyone is fit.

Saints 2021 best 22 - 2nd iteration
Out: Hannebery, In: Higgins.
FB: Paton - Howard - Wilkie
HB: Coffield - Carlisle - Clark
C: Hill - Steele - Billings
HF: Gresham - Membrey - Higgins
FF: Butler - King - Marshall
R: Ryder - Crouch - Jones
I: Long - Battle - Ross - Sinclair

Emg: Hannebery - Geary - Lonie - Dunstan

Hannebery and Geary will play a lot when fit, but I’d rather get games into my named 22.

Higgins is coming over to play games, he’ll be named early and be given plenty of opportunities, he’ll be a gun too rotating between small forward with bursts in the midfield. I hope we get him and he stays fit, will add to our side.

Paton - Howard - Wilkie
Coffield - Carlisle - Jones
Hill - Steele - Clark
Billings - Marshall - Higgins
Membrey - King - Butler

Ryder - Crouch - Gresham

Long - Battle - Ross - Sinclair

Jones, grunt and pace is what we need coming out of the HBF. He might butcher few times but he’ll take the game on, Coff is elite with his marking and decision making. Wilkie is our Mr Reliable, he’ll do his job. Howard and Jake are very good when played together, there’s a good understanding there, it allows them to play to their strengths. Paton and Long can lockdown or take the game on, Longs versatility is well known as well.

Hill - Jones - Billings - Clark can all rotate between HBF, W and HHF. Be it to rest or to create something else, it’s a good balance. Hill and Jones both have pace, and Clark/Billing’s are very creative and good kicks. Steele is Steele, Crouch is Crouch. We know what we will get from them. Gresham and Higgins can rotate with each other, you ain’t losing anything with that duo.

Higgins and Billing’s provides good links between the middle and forward, both good kicks and can lace out to our forwards. Marshall - Ryder we all know the drill but I’d like to see Marshall in the ruck more. Butler is butler, and the King, im very excited to see what he can produce in a full season.

Our interchange compliments our best 18 very well, there’s depth there for all the positions on the field.

Geary is in my team. One of the best against the Dogs, beating Caleb Daniel. Leadership, heart and soul. If he’s really struggling after 5 rounds and showing signs of age, and there is someone knocking down the door, ok, have the conversation. But first up, he’s in.

Long unlucky to miss out. Arguably my team is a little imbalanced with lots of guys doing similar things. Long could add zip and speed to balance that out, plus provide an extra in defense, as I’ve picked a lot of midfielders. I actually did my team with Long, and then realised I’d completely forgotten about Ross. It’ll be an interesting selection dilemma if all the mids are fit!

I’m hoping the addition of Crouch allows Billings and Gresham to return to the forward line- at least some of the time. I heard they both like playing midfield? But in my view 2 or 3 years ago, Gresham was destined to be the next Eddie Betts/Stevie Milne, and Billings had Steve Johnson/Paul Chapman half forward potential. Neither has really become an elite star- let’s see if Gresham and Billings can take the next step after returning to the positions where they played their first few years.

I think our talls are really important structurally, they’re unique in what they bring to the table, and they have potential to win us matches when they collectively click (as we saw against the Dogs): King, Ryder, Marshall, Howard, Carlisle - these are the guys I’d prefer not to get injured (apart from Steele of course, cos he’s an absolute gun). We have good depth coverage in most positions.

Sinclair/Long/Geary interchangeable based on form.

Tough team to pick now!

I think this is the year Geary stops getting a game and that's great for the club.

He's been an absolute warrior but I can't see how he is best 22 now.

Maybe. He can play a couple of different positions though. Defensive forward or backline. I think this will be important as we are carrying a lot of players that have little versatility. Crouch, Ross, Hannebury and useless if not playing on the ball. We also have to accommodate midfield time for Gresh, Clarke, maybe even a little bit of Higgins.

On this basis I can't see all of Crouch, Ross, Hannebury & Steele all getting a game together. It is too inflexible. I see Geary getting a game as a swing man, and Clarke getting some midfield time next year. Also, when Gresh or Higgins goes into the middle he can also play forward.

It will be interesting to do this side a week out from round 1 with all these hammy pingers in my side

Do we think Geary will still captain in 2021? I respect his experience and leadership but he's getting on and has never been the most skilled player.
It will be a bit embarrassing to bench a captain because he' s not in the best 22 but if he plays he could be taking valuable spot from a player coming into their prime.

Geary: 12 disposals, 2 goals, 0 tackles
Daniel: 26 disposals, 1 goal, 3 tackles

It was one of Geary's better games but he was well beaten by Daniel who was BOG for them.

Hanners can play wing, started there more often than the centre this year.

Nope. They moved Daniel off him and into the midfield and forward half because Geary was absolutely towelling him up up to HT. He then went onto Johannisen who had little impact in the 2nd half from memory. Daniel still got the ball when he was on Geary but he was hardly as damaging as he was all year. On the other hand Geary forced him to defend and took crucial contested marks on him time and time again.

Having said that, no way is Gears best 22 next year if everyone is fit. It’s unfortunate but he’s clearly declining, was up and down throughout last year and he’ll only be a year older in 2021, and we keep bringing in quality players that squeezes the spots up for grabs. It’s time to move on and give that spot to a stronger and more dependable contributor who will be a part of our future.

I will forever love his Elimination Final performance though. It was a finals effort 9 long years in the making for him.

I think it was Ratts, when asked about Geary. It sounded like he was talking about him as captain in past tense. I also think having a player who will be a part of our next premiership as our captain, is great for the group, marketing, recruitment, and our identity as a playing group
