I would siggest that Port, the Siants and the Lions did what they did because the young players pushed out the jouneymen.
I would suggest that in the case of the saints there improvement mainly came because they realised that their young players had deficiencies and they went out and recruited about five players from other teams to cover those deficiencies I personally don't rate their list that highly and can't see them taking the quantum leap that they would need to.
We don't need to worry about who above us have improved or got worse. We now have the cattle (having bought in 2 a graders and having others ready to explode) to improve significantly. If we have a reasonable injury run and are well coached we will leapfrog plenty of teams.

Kicking the ball and having the opposition mark it is a turnover. Most teams would have gone short (probably backwards) to a player by themselves instead of long down the line to a contest, especially not a kick that didn't favour any of our talls (instead putting it over their heads) or kick it boundary side if them.

Gibbons was the player with the ball (thanks to some clear thinking from SPS), the person with the ball controls the game, he gave up that control.
Rubbish. If one of our three big blokes halve the contest and smashes it to the boundary the game is over. If he went backwards and stuffed up you would be calling for a crucifixion. To be fair should have been done and dusted when Marshall missed from 5 out straight in front. No further correspondence from me on this. You can blame whoever you like.

No matter one’s philosophy on how to refer to poor players on an online forum, the unfortunate reality is that LOB is very unlikely to find himself on our list in 2022 unless he has the pre-season of his life. I really hope he does because he has some very good traits, and we are crying out for good ball users. I personally don’t see it, but god I hope I’m wrong.

I guess this may be an unpopular opinion, but I like what I saw in Lob early on, he was probably just a little under sized when playing. His first 2 years he nearly played 40 AFL games.
Has a wonderful kick, ran all day, was pretty defensive by nature. I think he makes it.
I rarely expected anyone under 22 to be playing great AFL footy, their bodies/mentality/fitness typically isn't ready for it, shame our club pushes them into the ones so early on in their careers.

If Covid doesn't prevent Carlton from playing home games again this season, we will romp into the finals.

No one doubts this and not unpopular at all. He hasn't come on yet though and doesn't look close. They don't all get there unfortunately.

Someone fabricate a training report FFS
Ben Crocker was grabbing a post training snack at Melb Uni KFC on Swanson St as I was walking to the tram tonight..He looked by far in the best shape of anyone else in the chicken shop.
Not fabricated, and equally in part not much of a training report. Sometimes truth is not stranger than fiction. Mostly just mundane.
Hope this helps

Someone fabricate a training report FFS
...Boys have all come back in great nic ...Training the house down ...best preseason ever ...looking to build on last years momentum ...new recruits looking to impress ...

That do?

Exactly, give him 100 games and see where he's at, plenty of time left to see what's going to happen with him.

Not a fan of him at the moment, but realistically plenty of time left to go and if we didn't pick LOB, not as if there was a plethora of superstars after him.

Patience, patience, patience, not every Carlton campaigner is going to be a Walsh.

People expect far too much, far too quickly, supporting an AFL club you're in for the looong haul, which includes 5+ year player development and struggling to get up the ladder.

It would help the cause a lot if the forwards could start kicking relatively easy set shots when given the opportunity. Like it or not they get enough forward 50 entries to post a decent score - and mostly failed to convert crucial set shots all too often. Until the side learns to take the opportunity and score more easily - Carlton will be stuck in middling Club status.

Harry should be played one out in front of goals where he can use his size and speed and leap to beat the key defender and everyone else should just FOFF outta there and learn to spread into space dragging their opponent with them or getting an easy mark - for starters - and Teague should stop with the defensive extra - forcing HBFers to play as midfielders to make up for stacked numbers behind the ball when they aren't necessary.

He has Plowman Jones SPS Docherty Weitering Saad and needs to learn to trust them to do the job. Letforwards be forwards and wingmen be wingmen so we have a 4 quarter structure and some accountability dialled in.

If that back six can't beat their opponents and let the midfield do their job so that the forwards can do their job - it is on Teague not the list he has at his disposal. No point in a total rebuild stacking the list with talent if you want to coach them to play like plodders.
Couldn’t agree more... great post..

Anyone here surprised that LOB is only 21 and has been in the AFL system for 3 years? Played 36 games of AFL between 2018/19, returns in 2020 to play 1 AFL game and that’s all because he can’t develop in the 2’s because there are no 2’s.

What would it take for our supporters to give it time where LOB is concerned? If we aren’t happy with him after a year in which he couldn’t develop outside of the seniors - apart from scratch matches - , then what is the solution? 2020 was a lost year for Victorian players development outside of AFL.

Agree. Let’s leave LOB alone. He’s a brilliant runner and often lovely kick. He was asked to play defensive wing his first two years and had no hope last year in the bubble.

Full preseason and a good go at the VFl for him. IMO his future in 2022 will actually depend on how well he plays at VFl level because the midfield is going to be very hard to crack.

Hmmm, is there anything here related to training. We are making as much sense as some of the peanuts at Capitol Hill. It’s mid January and I predict a riot. Oh, Newnes will play more games than many think.
I hope Stocker, Kemp and Dow take a big step forward.

Not enough love for Weiters and I think it’s because he is a victim of his high standards and being a little serious/driven. The guy has developed into a monster looking at the pic earlier and does not put a foot wrong on or off the field. People talking about walsh lifting standards, Weiters has been setting the tone for a while but nobody has jumped on his bandwagon because is floor is so high. Other than when bolts played him forward you can probs count on 1 hand the amount of times he has lost his match up.
Weiterbot has been eating his weiterbix...... and his operating system has been switched to beast mode!

If he went backwards and stuffed up he would have been crucified because he stuffed up. Good teams control the ball from that point and the player responsible for controlling the game is the one who has the ball.

We don’t need to worry about the quality of the teams we will compete against to make finals? You do realise how the competition works?

As for the saints it wasn’t the young players who made way good soldiers like Newnes, Acres & Savage were pushed out while players like Coffield, Clark and Battle took the next step.
We have gone and got the players to cover deficiencies like the Saints did - we now need the high talent young blokes to take the next step and ensure it is the good soldiers that are pushed out, not them.
