I gather he is more of a steeplechaser and his times are competitive in that discipline it seems to me. Aust open record for 3,000m steeplechase is 8.21.98. His time as a 16/17 year old early last year is pretty decent.
Yes his times are competitive but you need to be more than competitive to make a living out of running
The U20 Aust 3000m steeplechase record is 8.40.62 to Harrys 9.07.74
Running is also a solo sport and i am sure that played a big role on decision to concentrate on AFL not to mention the money he will earn.
His running ability will be a big asset when he hopefully gets a chance in the seniors

Yep, that was right in front of us.
Fages through in a couple of cheeky ones while on the ground too.
I was quite concerned while it was happening because his head was within a foot of the concrete slab of the dugout.
Yep, and MRobbo was putting it all on Rich, and telling Fages that Rich could of pulled out if he wanted to.

Glad to read that Joey's going well up there. I was sad to see him go but it will be exciting to see him play again. You folks will love him. Joe in the field will give Hipwood and Charlie so much space (actually, not sure about that at the Gabba).

How's his goal kicking going? His field kicking is brilliant, but the set shots were a continual frustration for us.

The boys were at it bright and early again this morning down at Yeronga >

1- No scratch match today, agility work, handball and kicking drills.
2- The kicking drills were full field, full team with multiple balls in play, handling looked better than when I was there on Monday, boys very vocal as usual.
3- 9-10 v 3 in the handball drill, 3 trying to get it off the 9-10 in a tight space, really good high intensity stuff.
4- I kept a particular eye on the new boys, Sharp, H.Smith, B.Coleman skills looked really good in both the hand and foot drills, Carter Michael handling looked sloppy, his kicking looks good though.
5- Zorks doing laps by himself again, the only one who didn't join in full training.
6- Mitch robbo did a fair few high intensity roughly 100 meter sprints at the end of the session.
7- A group of six ie. J.Berry, Cocatoo, Birchall, Daniher, H&A Smith did a dozen or so laps of the full oval(150 meters at roughly half pace followed by 20 meter walk then repeat) at the end of training, Berry setting the pace followed by Birch and Joe together then the other 3 a bit further behind.
8- Could not spot Lachie Neale there today and I did look for him.
9- Big Joe continues to impress, very good in tight skills and subtlety for such a big man.

The boys got in a full team huddle at the start of training to sing happy birthday to one of the coaches/staff, couldn't tell who it was.

My grandson came with me and was right on the fence and gave Charlie the old motorcycle celebration which Charlie enjoyed and said hi, he also asked Mitch when his next game streaming was and Mitch gave him a tap on the shoulder and said maybe tonight buddy... it made the grandsons day.

Cam Rayner was doing a media interview as we left with a lot of cameras there, expect it up on lions.com today and the MSM tonight.

No ruck work done again today.

They all kick for goal brilliantly at training including Brissie Joe;), no matter what you do you can not duplicate match day pressure at training unfortunately, the mind gets in the way.

Of course he does! Good luck to you this year, and to Brissie Joe. Hopefully he doesn't tear us a new one. I've seen it before and it doesn't look pleasant.

Thanks for the report Jason mp.
Zorko doing laps again.
Does any one know if he had any procedure done on his injury from last year.
I remember at the time they indicated it would be left alone for 2020.

I popped in to Coorparoo before Christmas and the boys were doing one of their off season training sessions Zorko was doing a bit of rehab stuff while the others were running.
And the boys were yelling out a bit of Banter at Zorks saying “C’mon Zorks get out here and start training, c’mon!”

His reply was “I would love nothing more than to be out there with you boys but I would like to play this season.”

Take from that what you will, but I think he is being managed and having a slow build towards the start of the season. To minimise the stress loads for as long as possible after last season.

Medical Room
Tall midfielder Connor McFadyen is the only Lions player on the injury list as he recovers from an ACL tear, which he suffered last July. Meanwhile, star recruit Joe Daniher has spent all summer with the main group.

Time trial king
Draftee Harry Sharp smashed the Lions' club record, running the 3km time trial under nine minutes. He was followed in by midfield pair Jarrod Berry and Hugh McCluggage, with Ely Smith finishing fourth and Tom Fullarton and Deven Robertson tying for fifth.

Who's flying?
Third-year midfielder Ely Smith (pictured below) has been the standout, according to teammates. After arriving as a big-bodied midfielder, he has transformed his body shape and become a leading runner and a contender for a wing role. His skills have been sharp

AAMI Community Series
Saturday, February 27 v Gold Coast @ Metricon Stadium
Sunday, March 6 v Carlton @ Ikon Park

And another thing...
Nakia Cockatoo
has earned the respect of his teammates early. After finishing his 3km time trial, the former Cat noticed Blake Coleman needed a lift and ran back to run the last lap with him. It was a moment that "went off" on the club's group chat. – Nathan Schmook

I wasn't all that impressed with Ely Smith in the 2 training sessions I went to this week, doesn't strike me as an instinctive footballer, takes that split second too long to make a decision, reminds me of a younger version of CEY, he is very young though so hopefully as he matures he can surpass the level CEY has got to.

Was under the impression that he was an in and under player not a wing?

I’m guessing instead an inside mid who can burst from packs we want more distributors feeding it to better ball users.

I know we like our wingers to influence at stoppages but after losing the game to Geelong with their mids consistently getting first hands on the footy I would’ve liked a focus on improving that area of the game.

Last year when we finally got a review of the reserves players.
He had been learning the wing role throughout games last year to learn a second role so he has another string to his bow.

Yeah I know and someone who can stick tackles.. ran through us like cones.. Not the first time we not first to the ball and have big bodied mids burst out of the centre.

Hi guys,
Sorry to jump on your board but I’m wondering how the Irish boys are tracking for you? Especially madden. He was a stand out minor footballer at home in Ireland a couple of years ago. Think he’s in his third year so the Lions must be seeing something in him to keep him around beyond the initial 2 year rookie deal.
Fascinated to see how Uosis goes. He was actually a goalkeeper for Kerry back home in Gaelic football so it will be an interesting transition to AFL for him. Was born in Lithuania and only moved to Ireland in 2004 I believe. From the same small town as Geelongs Mark O’Connor.

I realize Fages has a preference for players to multidimensional, bu this suggests to me they don’t think he’s going to get there as an inside mid alone and therefore needs to bring something else to the table. We got smashed by Geelong around the ball twice last year and desperately need another very good mid, but despite Ely being a larger body the club has pushed him out on to the wing and trimmed him down. This despite our obvious need. To go with that we are hearing good reports on Tom Joyce and no signs of shifting him to alternate positions other than just improving this mid field skills. I don’t think the signs are very good for Ely.

I haven't seen this review, got a link please?

How does the signs not being very good for him square with him being the standout in training? Perhaps the coaches thought his ceiling was higher as a wing than an inside mid, and he's proving them right so far.

All bar Key forwards and Backs everyone else in the team should be able to play a couple of positions throughout a game.
Personally I think that It is all just a part of Ely’s development to learn to adapt to different roles within the team.
I am not for one minute saying that he is going to become a star winger and or midfielder, just that he needs to be able play more than just an inside game.
Not even the great Brownlow medalist Lachie Neale plays 100% of his game time inside.

It was on the Lions website I believe back in October/November maybe?
Wouldn’t know how to find it.
I think it was written by Paul Henriksen and mentioned the standouts as Jaxon Prior, Tom Joyce, Dev Robbo and Ely with a quick run down on each.
